We are on a 3,000km road trip and towing a caravan!
We left Queensland on a 39 degree Celsius day. The X-trail struggled up a range towing the caravan. We were at the verge of overheating but managed to get through.
In this video, I share with you some bush mechanic repairs I had to do as well as good tips on how to prevent your car from overheating.

Great tips... Some of the guys doing burnout competitions use the old water squirter trick to keep their V6 commodores revving at full mang on hot days. Am a big fan bush fixes... Blew a heater fan resistor out past Parkes trying to keep things cool a few years ago. Wired a spare H4 globe in place of the resistor. Worked great during the day, but threw WAY too much light in the footwell to use at night. Thanks for sharing!

Same thought. Though I have a vehicle that has maximum towing of 3.2 T. The most I'll tow is 2 T. Rather drive the car in safe margin than at the breaking (maximum) point. Happy trip and have a good Christmas Marvin.

G'day mate, your clips convinced me to buy the X-trail l was looking at and after they helped with mods and how to drive it off road. So on Sunday l buy a pop top caravan and on Friday you put up your clip with some great hints for towing with a X-trail. l would be happy to see the odd caravan clip like this giving useful information. Thanks Marvin.

Great vid mate, not sure if it’s been mentioned, but check that the external fan you have wired in is pushing air through the radiator instead of pulling. If you have wired it like factory, it may actually be doing nothing as the air will be getting pushed to the front of the car.

Another great video. I've got a 2013 T31 and towed a Pioneer Argyll camper trailer that weighed about 1200kg fuly loaded. Did 30,000 kms over 14 months on the road over end of 2017 to 2019. Started in Brisbane and meandered over five states to end in WA. Xtrail never missed a beat and had some very challenging times including breaking tow bar 300km from Normanton on the back roads of north Qld. It still limped to town over a few days and made it. I had from new and it's only on 155,000. I'm hoping it's got the same again. Happy travels to all.

@zanderp4923 is Your Xtrail T31 diesel or petrol, 6 speed auto or Manual or CVT?

@edwinalexander1170 . G'day, I have a T31 ST-L petrol. So 2.5litre cvt auto transmission. I know a lot if people wouldn't choose it but it ultimately never let me down. It I supposedly rated as a 2 tonne tow, though having about 1.3 or 1.4 was plenty. Certainly felt the bigger hills. Definitely wouldn't go over 1.5 tonnes.

Mate, your videos are always informative and helpful. Keep on keeping on! Also, when you release that water inside the heater core, it introduces that unheated water into the cooling system, which gives you additional, temporary, respite.

VERY neat trick! I know I'm being pedantic but as windscreen washers are a roadworthy item I think there is a slim chance you'll get a canary doing this - but hey, just make sure you switch them back when you get back in to town and they're not needed to cool the engine 8-) . Yes I agree. But if you come across a coppa that really pings you for it or even figures out your windscreen washers aren't working while on the road, I think it's really meant to be 😂

Great to see you enjoying your family. I have a T31 and was thinking of trading it in but because of your vids i took it to the mechanic to get it checked out. With 280 000 on the clock the mechanic said it was a good car and i should keep it. Thanks for sharing your adventures and your advice. Merry Christmas

This has been really interesting! I didn't knew the xtrail can get so hot when towing. I wonder if there are any larger radiators solutions that could permanently help with this issue?

I haven't seen a bigger aftermarket radiator for the Xtrail. As I mention in the video, it was hot that time and one of the fans wasn't working. If it wasn't the case, I would think it will be OK.

Thanks for the tips dude, sexy xey doing its thing. The T31 has 2 fans at front that keep a constant temp in all condition fully loaded in my experience, thou never towed with her.

man i bought the t31 recently. most practical car and platform ever. 2,20 meters in the back if you push everything forward and its flat. Perfect. If it breaks i will probably buy it again no cap. 316k with a total engine rebuilt at 300k. runs like a charm.

Loved the bush mechanics... The new fan and your improvisation on the washers is a great idea, well done. Good advice regarding towing with a x trail and similar vehicles. Did you keep the A/T's you recently put on and what sort of brake controller are you running?

@@Wolf4wdadventures.576 I did keep the A/Ts which will go back on once the offroad adventure starts again. I use the Tekonsha Primus IQ portable brake controller. I'll release another video showing our setup and also more about towing.
