Maybe, possibly if humans evolved from star dust that came from an exploding star and matter was scattered across and stars were formed coming from the energy from the supernova converted pushing atoms and particles into solar systems.

During my years of depression, these thoughts kept me alive. I was thrilled by being starstuff, connected to everything else, a temporary manifestation of matter in the uncomprehendingly vast universe, yet so unique. It gave my life meaning. Only years later I became familiar with all these great science populators, saying my thoughts outloud. I think it's a message all humans should be familiar with. It's humbling and thrilling

I love the story DeGrasse tells of when he was an aspiring student. He had opportunity to meet Sagan and was bowled over in amazement at Sagan's encouragement. What I love most is that DeGrasse has resolved to honor that generosity by mentoring others. Surely both men are filled with wonder and delight in what they learned. It shines from them like billions and billions of stars.

It's chilling that the "new" Cosmos came out 5 years ago. I remember watching each episode as they came out on NatGeo in high school and excitedly live tweeting about how amazing the visuals were and how much I loved space. Now I'm in university and don't have as much time on my hands as I used to. You never have more time than today.

This song keeps me from taking my life. I love space and time but I'm stuck in this mediocre life with no degrees or money and nothing to brag about other than family. I hope my kid can see the universe through the eyes of someone who have been dragged through hell. I don't care how vain you are, the universe will always be more beautiful than you, The universe and death are the only gods. Most people think their god is perfect and that's why I say your "God" doesn't exist, because the Universe isn't perfect and no one should be more powerful and awe inspiring than the universe.

Johnny Page Show your kids these videos and programs like Nova and Cosmos. Buy them books from Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan, Brian Green, Michio Kaku, Steven Hawking and others. Buy them a subscription to a magazine like Discover or Scientific American. Tell them to always keep searching for an answer. Don't just sit on your butt and believe what is fed to you.

Sounds like you're suffering from depression. I hope things are better since you wrote this. Degrees and money are good to have, but they're not everything. Family is a big plus in life. SoS never ceases to amaze me or brings me to tears. This is so beautiful and poetic, and it just brings me back to when I was a little kid and I'd be in awe with the cosmos and everything I could learn about what was out there. A little late in coming, but this was quite delightful to the ears. Very well produced to entertain, teach some fun facts and offer up a positive and refreshing vibe. We have yet to learn many truths and re-create new truths from theory. We are all born with open minds with infinite space. What and how much goes in is up to us and our power to rationalize, rely and appreciate. We breathe the world in, we observe and deduce, we explore and discover, we learn and share, then leave our existence on earth much more enlightened. What is beyond that is for the universe to decide.

At this moment i am writing a book on science in America, I'm not an expert, but because of melodysheep's amazing videos and the many inspirational scientists (Dr.Tyson, Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, etc.) that grace us with their knowledge i was encouraged to do the research, learn up on a few topics and write a book. Just a note to the theists here. Evolution in no way states that humans came from monkeys. You are correct that no human was ever borne from a monkey. Evolution shows that we evolved from a common ancestor that we share with apes (not monkeys). We evolved parallel to them, not directly from them. Seriously, if you are going to publicly attempt to refute scientific facts, at least do some basic research.

There are those of us who believe that the method of God's creation is Evolution. It fits well with the idea of God as being One who constantly improves, redeems things. Genesis 2:7: "And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." The man who discovered the Big Bang was, in fact, a lay Catholic priest. I am a scientist who wants to understand God through science, not try to fit God into my preconceived notions and biased interpretation of Scripture. If God is real, His Creation isn't a lie that will mislead us. We can trust honest, careful, transparent, skeptical examinations of Creation to lead us closer to the Truth, and we should not shy away from Truth. This is why scientists (especially physicists) often are compared to amateur theologians... We are trying to understand God through general revelation. ...and the aspects of God that are not immediately apparent from the created order, like Love, are nonetheless apparent to even the atheist as worthwhile, powerful qualities that transcend our petty little everyday hates. Anyway, yay science!

Scientists, or at least good scientists, do not start with a conclusion and look at the evidence in light of that conclusion so that it shines favorably on said conclusion. I wonder, if you were shown archeological proof that Christian god is false, if you would give up belief in that god. Or if you would disbelieve the evidence and keep your faith.

***** My faith is focused on the teachings of Jesus. He talked about loving your enemies. Praying for those who persecute you. You rightly are disgusted by the primitive reality of life during the Old Testament, and even the genocide present in the Old Testament. But I hear the words of a homeless man who dared to defy the hypocritical religious teachers at the time with good news of unrelentingly selfless love, and I can't help but think that this is goodness, if there is any in the world. This is not a scientific belief, and I don't ever intend to use scripture in any scientific way other than as perhaps inspiration, but it certainly affects how I live my life.

***** Good scientists start often with a hypothesis and then seek to find information which supports or opposes that hypothesis. God cannot be disproven any more than the FSM can be. God is this: a powerful entity that created the universe (we don't know how, but science can help us learn how). The Christian version of this idea is that this entity is personal and loving and just and has endless love for even the lowest person. This is not really a scientific idea, it can't really be disproven since we are inside the Universe and thus our ability to make claims about what (if anything) lies beyond the Universe is intensely limited. But I choose to live my life as if it's true, to care for others in a personal and loving manner, striving to be selfless and consider others as better than myself. If the Christian God does not exist, I will still live my life in that manner because such an idea ought to exist. I don't find a contradiction, here, between that idea and science. Science enables me to more closely understand the mind of God, by which I mean the order of the Universe.

If anyone checking out your little "competition" has a shred of scientific criticism or just plain common sense, they will quickly realize that the whole of Truth Contest is nothing more than just another scam. Do some research, actually check the website out. Do you see any other "applications" for the "contest"? Check out the comments. There's no comment platform, they're all just plain text, all of which have usernames such as "Mark G" or "Bob A" etc. That's just extremely creepy, as it's painfully obvious those are not even real people. Fucking cultists. Get out of my science.

As someone who has been passionate about astronomy since I was super young, I remember sobbing after finding the Hubble ultra deep field images. They were so breathtakingly beautiful, and the SoS tracks just added to the magic. It's moving beyond words to know that you're part of something bigger than yourself---all of us are. And to me, that's more powerful and awe inspiring than anything any religion can preach.

Dude. These "Symphony of Science" videos are extremely beautiful. They are like the condensed version of the scientific lectures you can find on youtube, but with more of the stuff that's poetry and philosophy through the lens of a scientist. Don't get me wrong, I love that too, but I truly think the best philosophers and poets are scientists. They understand the world in a much deeper way.

I believe in a creator. Many call him/her God. I believe that Science and Religion shouldn't be at odds with eachother. We are gifted with self awareness, intelligence, and curiosity. It is inherent in us to try to understand everything around us, and we should try to find the answers of the universe. I believe that a creator is evident, the more I learn, the more I can see the hand of the watchmaker. The Big Bang was the spark that set everything into motion. To me, that doesn't mean that a creator doesn't exist. Evolution to me could simply be stated as God's divine plan. Though there must be a missing piece of the puzzle since we're so different from all the other species. We perceive things differently as we age, time itself seems to speed up. Steven Hawking proposed that God couldn't exist before the creation of the universe, since time itself didn't exist. I dare say that a power capable of creating all that we know, and the natural laws that bind it, would be above those laws, even time. We know everything to have a beginning and an end, so it's impossible to fathom a power that could have always existed. A creator beyond what we can understand, not bound by time, and therefore eternal. I'm rambling. In short. Believing in God isn't stupid. Believing in a book, wrote by men, at the cost of an open mind. That is a tragedy.

Evolution by definition is not guided. The environment that the organism lives in determines the value of its genes, which in turn affects which genes become more common which is evolution. In essence, no creator is required for this process at all. If God is not bound by time it would be impossible to impact us in any imaginable way.

Sorry, if God can come from nothing so can the universe and that question is a worthless fallacy. Even if there is something that could be called a deity, it would certainly not be the slavery and genocide supporting God that ancient Jewish settlers invented as part of their cult.
