I am truly impressed by the efforts of Stoke Space in developing a fully reusable rocket. This is a monumental achievement that will revolutionize the way we think about space travel. The ability to reuse a rocket means that we can significantly reduce the cost of space exploration and make it more accessible to a wider range of organizations and individuals. Not only is this a major technological breakthrough, but it also has the potential to greatly reduce the environmental impact of space travel. By eliminating the need to constantly build and dispose of rockets, we can decrease the amount of pollution and waste generated by the industry. I have no doubt that the innovative and forward-thinking team at Stoke Space will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of rocket science. @thesentientneuron6550
@thesentientneuron6550 Год назад
@@medivalone The aerospike doesn't really require the spike, but your point still stands. Part of the heatshield might have a profile similar to that on a truncated aerospike, and the rest of the spike is generated by pumping gas out through the middle of the heatshield, i.e. the same vent used to provide active heatshielding.
@thesentientneuron6550

Interesting concept. As much I'm a fan of new companies trying to break into the industry, they often fall short. I hope you guys can deliver on your claims down the line. You have me on the metallic heat shield. Excited to see that in action. All the best!
@randompersonoftheinternet8012
I highly doubt they are going to end up with a metallic heatshield. SpaceX's Starship was originally shown to not have a ceramic tile heatshield either, but now it does. Metal warps under those high temps and will begin to fracture. A metal heatshield isn't indestructible, and it's ultimately just going to be more expensive.
@IsMaski
@IsMaski Год назад
@@randompersonoftheinternet8012 Agree on those points. If anyone was to try it, it would be SpaceX. There is a reason why it was abandoned. Maybe stoke space made a breakthrough. We never know till we see it. Let's see..
@randompersonoftheinternet8012
@@IsMaski they haven’t even finished the first part of their program: the propulsion system for the second stage. As far as I can tell from the video all they’ve done is plumbed up the ring of combustion chambers. Time will tell, but don’t get your hopes up
@Ender240sxS13
@Ender240sxS13 Год назад
@@randompersonoftheinternet8012 so there are some significant differences in the designs of starships heat shield and stokes heat shield. The primary difference is that Stokes plans on using regenerative cooling for the heat shield. They have channels within the heat shield through which they will be running the LH2 propellant, the absorbed heat will actually be used to the power the turbo pumps for the engine. This differs significantly from the original starship design which planned on trying to use a diffusive active cooling where the methane fuel would diffuse through the surface and create a film cooling effect. This had significant problems as they couldn't achieve uniform diffusion rates across the entire surface which led to hotspots. Some other differences are the significant size and shape difference. I believe the very large surface area of Starship is one reason they couldn't do the channel cooling, and ultimately why the diffusive film cooling didn't work either. Also the use of methane also makes the channel cooling for starship impractical due to its heat capacity compared with LH2. Additionally Starship will be reentering from much much higher orbits, significantly increasing the thermal load on the heat shield.
@randompersonoftheinternet8012
@@Ender240sxS13 My point is that they are subject to their solutions simply not working, just like spaceX. Also, the size and shape are a significant difference, but I also see it to be a problem. The 3d render showed the heat shield on the bottom of the payload capsule, which doesn’t have as large of a drag cross section as opposed to re-entering on it’s side. This just means the heatshield will have to sustain more heat, and the burners for slowing the landing will have to do more work. I mean these potential issues would be a huge thing to overcome, and until they actually test this “groundbreaking heat shield technology,” a 3d render is just an imaginative vision.

Your idea of launching and reusing is very unique especially the 2nd second stage. Hope you rise in the future. My best wishes. I am quite enthusiastic about your space program.

I'm hoping for a winged 1st stage that will use a runway for landing. Similar to early Space Shuttle concepts. A winged, lift, 1st stage should benefit from having extensive rtls flight characteristics.

It's amazing to see all the these companies pushing for partial and full reusability. SpaceX, RocketLab, Blue Origin (kinda), and now Stoke. NASA and other space agencies need to take note.

In the 1960’s Douglas aerospace designed the ROMBUS spacecraft that looks just like Stoke’s space vehicle. Interesting!

Seems like such an obvious design, I wonder why nobody has done something like this before.

These sort of designs have been proposed before with stuff like Bono's Rombus, Chrysler SERV and you could probably chuck X-33 in as well. The big differences between this and the older designs is that it's a 2 stage setup instead of SSTO. Falcon 9 has killed SSTO's as the default reuse method and I'm kinda thankful for it.

Looks really good, reusability once perfected could mean we would soon have (or be close enough to) space ships that can thrust off the ground (probably fly inside the troposphere too) and re-enter the atmosphere from space all successfully. If this stuff works out as intended, this can be huge.
