As much as the community hates Phenoix resale. I was a collector overpaying for it and started buying lots and I am proud to say I bought a car after 6 months of flipping games Get him on the pod!
I collect specific pops like tmnt or horror but when you see other lines clearance it’s tempting. I’m also a retro toy collector as well it’s honestly what makes you happy at the end of the day. It’s toys
I collect all of it... I have about 200 left but sold around 2000...I collect anything that's cool or reminds me of what I had as a kid, I turned 46 this past july....
Personally I think the most movement on Pops is driven by nostalgia. Its people seeing a character that they liked as a kid that brings back memories and makes you smile when you see it. But they have so over saturated the space with them. If you cant tell what the character is when its out of the box its pointless. 99% of the pops I own are Comic, animated or from character movies . All are instantly identifiable out of the box.
I love the podcast so much, and I know the reason you guys don't upload the full video right away and why the audio only comes out first because of the editing, but man I really wish the video versions would come out at the same time, just to see the visual gags you guys do and just look at the set more, but I'm just so impatient so I just end up listening to the audio version since it comes out first.
Hearing "and like" "or like" "so like" every other word makes me not want to listen to someone's argument/explanation because now I'm focused on when the next "like" is coming out BUT in my opinion, yes Funko POPs are dying out because of oversaturation and production runs. He's right, they used to be special and limited but now every license gets one and now it's flooding stores. So many local shops near me stopped carrying Funko POPs because it's no longer worth supplying them with how expensive they've become and how many other places you can get it.
I can relate to Mikey with losing money on preorders then which the store disappears and you’re out $800… That’s the reason I only do credit card preorders now.
For me, I only collect Pops that are dearest/interesting to me. There are some series that I do wish they'd cover (i.e. Fatal Fury/King of Fighters, Super Mario, Jelly Belly, to name a few), but the biggest problem is oversaturation. Seriously, how many variations of DC/Marvel/Star Wars/Rick & Morty can we take?
I just don't see the appeal of pops. They all look identical to me. People just leave them in their box and put it on the shelf. To each their own. If you like them, go for it. They just aren't for me. By the way, how did you get that Target display Mario?!
I would say those that don’t collect them would be willing to own 1 or 2 Pop. For me, 2Pac & Biggie. I’m always listening to rap on my PC. Be cool to prop them in front of my monitor. But even being cheap as they are, I still have bought either. 😅
@@thelastdragon5551 for sure. I own a few. I saw some stranger things pops and got them for my kid. he likes them, but its like it has to be something that stands out from the rest. Kinda the pops that don't look like the typical pops.
Great discussion! I don’t have too many - was always selective and tried to get small production runs like the ones Conan O’Brien had made for his Comicon shows, things like that. Another favorite is the still-sealed Princess Bride 4 pack that included a chase. That’s what made it a must have (aside from being one of the greatest movies ever) - the drive behind getting to preorder something that you knew A would sell out and B had a chase. This ties into the mention of how limited numbers and special sets that drive preorders are what Funko needs to maintain instead of making huge runs of everything. Limited con exclusives for example always end up on eBay for those unable to attend and there are usually bidders on ones that are ridiculous prices. Making only so many of something, where a store MIGHT get one, or a mystery box might contain one, is where that next level collecting is at.
12:31 Bootleg borders at the pops, holmes lol Dang, I appreciate that comment about Ali Express, most people would feel some type of way about saying the amount of money offered. I think the transparency is beneficial to the community, knowledge is power, right. It just gives me a bit better perspective of product reviews/endorsements from certain youtubers.
Ah cool thing with Funko Pop License is that they have actors or characters that can get made because its of a character and not necessarily a actor. example top gun tom cruse.
It's all the products they do. Not just pops they just went crazy with how many things they do. Pins, trading cards now, sodas, deluxe, album covers, comic covers, different size pops, bitty pops etc
Started my collecting journey with Pops. Ended up branching out to vintage toys I remembered having as a kid. Then into retro gaming with SNES, N64, and Game Gear. Now I’m in the VHS game. Great topic!
Mikey is awesome! He took a long time to say Funko Pops are dead though haha! 😂😂 It was a huge fad that couldn't last. I remember all of the crazy huge Funko Pop lines they would have at NYCC -- you had to get in that line as soon as you got into the venue, then wait another 1-4 hours before you got to buy a few of the exclusives. It was ridiculous. If you sold during the pandemic you made out. Now maybe 2-5% of those Pops are actually worth picking up. If you can get a huge lot for a couple of bucks, you'll make out as a reseller though.
My only issue with Funko is why destroy them. I get that it costs more to store them but I mean they could have just reached out to local churches and they could distribute them to kids during the holidays. I've helped out in many Xmas events where parents don't have enough to give kids gifts so we go around collect toys for kids and give them out. Funko could have done the same thing.
Cause this isn‘t the society we live in, it would always be better if any big company would just give away the stuff they can‘t sell for free not just Funko. Imagine giving away food for free that doesn‘t get sold.
I’m glad someone knew how crazy licensing is when working with Disney and WB. Funko literally needs to make all that stuff to keep the license. Most people just think the company is greedy.
Funko didn't just go to the Stockmarket like he said. They got on their in 2017. I started collecting Funko Pops back in 2012 orso and I got out of the collecting in 2017. So you can imagen how many 100s of rare Funko Pops I had and how much profits I made. But I got out because they where making to much and different version because it used to only be Chase/SDCC/ECCC/NYCC/Flocked. Fakes just started hitting the market and nothing was being done about it. I sold everything and moved to Pokemon. Funko Management has failed over the years and thats where it all went wrong. I used to be a stock owner but sold near the Peaks. Management failed in the 2021 peaks and made far to many Funko Pops that litually went into a landfill 10s of millions worth. Management has always been an issue. I noticed stores are now stuck with inventory and it's not selling anymore even if they cut the price in half. It aint selling like it used when I was still in the game and it's a shame, because I know how much people love their Funko Pops and you sell a Funko Pop to buy other Funko's.. It's looking bleak. It won't dissapear, but it's seen it's best days atleast for the next years. Also don't forget a bunch of people simply have less money now
My wife and I were pretty big into Funko Pop collecting for a while. We have a few that are selling for a good bit. The ones I know off the top of my head are the two Miser brothers from The Year Without A Santa Claus movie. A lot of nostalgic figures. I should go through and check what they are going for sometime.
what they need to do is lower the quantity common 9k to 10k exclusive 2k to 5k and grails 12pcs to 1500pcs if they start doing that i know everyone will start colleting more common exclusive and grails
Funko did just go on the stock market. Funko went public on November 2, 2017, listing on the NASDAQ stock exchange. If you want to know if Funko Pops are dying, check out its stock price. Spoiler, it's not good.
Five and below pre pandemic had 100s of copies of triforce heroes brand new….I bought a couple copies and the guy behind me basically bought every single one
@@bootlegheroes Sorry to hear buddy. I have about 2000 in the collection right now, and I've been cutting it down doing a garage sale every month in the summer. Stuff like that leaves a sour taste.
I truly believe funko took a loss on purpose companies do it all the time it creates scarcity and puts that fomo in peoples head and then they say we are limiting production which creates a fear and drives sales im an online seller of funko and people are buying cheap commons up to thousands on one pop still but some changes are definitely needed on funkos end
They were fun at first, but who hasn't been gifted at least a couple of these in the past decade? They take up a ton of space.. what are you even supposed to do with them all? Beyond the niche market for collectors, the general populace is burnt out on these and I include myself in that group.
I sold all my marvel pops they was great to look at but geez they kept releasing the same characters over and over. Never selling my batman/bttf pops though 😂
As someone whos been collecting pops for 6+ years, the thing that I think gets new people into them is that the retail is so low (no more than $15 - 20 usually) that they are a great "gateway drug" into the collecting scene. Low price, low space requirement compared to something for a statue and as Mikey said, something for everyone
The only gamestore around here that is specifically a "retro game store" has their entire store lined from ceiling to floor with funko pops and then has like 2 tiny shelves of games and a hanful of gamed behind glass. I was so disappointed when I went there and completely overwhelmed by the funko pops. I dont know how they can call themselves a game store.
Sometimes you get lucky at 5 and below, I found 20 copies of yo Kai watch on 3ds for $5 ea. bought em all and sold ea one for no less than $25. But never had any luck with funkos there tho.
The thing with funko pops is they make too many so spoils it a little for the collectors, I did buy some that I still have but they are not worth anything they just looked cool when I bought them. I look at them and just see stickers on them all saying "limited edition" or "comic con limited " etc etc its all designed to make it look rare but theres millions of them. If you was exclusivity buy kidrobot or kaws
