I know, right? 50 is such an accomplishment for every other player in the league, but when Ovechkin doesn't reach it, it kind of feels like a failure. It's weird.

He really is. A friend of mine lives nearby the Dynamo arena in Moscow. So he used tu see Ovi multiple times in a local bar having some beer with homies. And it was always a pleasure for Ovi to have a little chat with fans or random guests.

No the greatest goal scorer of all time did it while also getting more assists a than anyone else has total points. If Gretzky put all of his focus on scoring goals like Ovechkin, it wouldn’t even be kind of close. Ovechkin would have to replicate Jagr’s career but entirely in the NHL to even get a sniff. Also, Gretzky isn’t a dictator’s lapdog.

I'm a Caps fan who used to hate Crosby and Malkin. I was 25 when they all started. Now, at 41, I'm a little upset that Malkin, Backstrom and Crosby are having injury problems. I don't want the rivalry to end.

@@1georgekitchen same here, I use to hate the pens, but now I just miss the old days of their rivalry. Their playoff matches, despite rarely going in our favor, we’re still electric to watch. I’ll never forget that game where Ovi and Sid had matching hat tricks, just the best players in the league giving it all they had. I wouldn’t worry about Bäckström too much, apparently the rehabbing on his hip is going well so he should be back soon. And barring a serious injury, he should be able to play out the rest of his career before riding off into the sunset with Ovi. Crosby should be fine too, or I hope at least. I’m not so sure about Malkin tho, the guy just can’t seem to avoid getting hurt and I’m pretty sure this is the second year in a row where he’s found himself on IR.

I keep telling people this. Gretzky was playing when the the goalies had Jason masks for helmets. Both leg pads were the size of one pad now! For Ovie to break the record in this day and age would be the single most impressive broken record we will ever see in our lifetimes.

At this point almost every game he plays in he is setting a record of some type or moving farther up a list that has a handful of people on it. Hopefully this season he will be within the top 3 goal scorers, as he is now #5.

It has to be because he keeps climbing the goals record, he literally climbed up yesterday. So they are just keeping up with his goal scoring that’s why there’s a lot of Ovi content

@@rogerszmodis What you're saying about hooking and holding is true, but it's not relevant. Gretzsky's peers also have tons and tons more points than players in the modern era. There are challenges in every era. In the era of hooking and holding a great player could score about twice as often as one can in this era. Ovechkin is the superior goal-scorer by any statistical method whatsoever that attempts to measure actual goal-scoring ability.

Crosby is fine but he's not and never has been as good as Ovechkin. Crosby is not in the top-5 centers of all-time while Ovechkin is the best winger of all-time (and there are twice as many wingers as centers). Crosby has played on the best team in the league on average for 15 years, with the third best player in the league on average on his team for 15 years. He gets extra credit for team accomplishments and because he is Canadian. Absolutely superstar great player -- but Ovechkin is more than great. Ovechkin is the greatEST.

Crosby isn't even the best Penguin so no we can't agree there. I mean Crosby is an awesome player, but he's not the greatest at anything - while Ovie is.

I became a Caps after Holland ran the Wings into the ground. That Caps playoff run was legendary! I still get goosebumps rewatching the highlights. I can't wait till I can root for the Wings in thee playoffs again. Won't be long because the job Stevie has done is unbelievable!

I didn’t really get that vibe from this. These last few years will have a heavy spotlight on Ovi because of his chase for the record. I think it’s just more to show how many players love him and are supporting him in his hunt for Gretzky.
