I remember the Hob-Nob, my parents used to stop there on the way to my grandparents over in Appalachia! That was before the four lane highway was built! Great place to eat, glad to learn it has survived being bypassed by the main highway now. Sadly on a recent trip over to my home town of Appalachia I now see that the pool and Country Boy Drive Inn as you enter Big Stone are now in the past. The new addition near there I visited was the old President’s rail car used by the President of the Interstate Railroad, that terminal and yard up in Andover are gone now. I remember as a young kid visiting the office building there, my dad was a civil engineer there and my grandfather was the locomotive engineer on the old #7 steam locomotive. Some of the old railroad employee homes are still there, my dad grew up in the house there right next to the Methodist Church! The old rail yard, round house shops and the old office building are all long gone now. There were four boys and three girls between his mom and dad. The 18 grave family cemetery plot is still there on the hill in the American Legion Cemetery in Powell Valley, dad’s father, his grandparents and my mom and dad are now resting there, a house beautiful view looking down the valley! Things change over time, it’s good to see something’s survive the test of time, not to be forgotten.

Love this! My 86yo Uncle and his late wife went to the Hob Nob on their first date back in the 50's. My Mom was born in Duffield, VA and grew up in Kingsport, TN. 🙂 Love seeing these familiar places.

The Hob-Nob was the first place I ever had curly fries back in the 1980s. I still like to stop by there every now and then for a BLT and a sweet tea. The place has remained largely unchanged since then. It speaks volumes that it has remained open for decades, even after they opened the four lane in 1970.

So it’s what you call mostly bread with a little burger, maybe that burger you ordered would be for children and the other the larger burger be for the adult. I know it didn’t say that on the menu but that’s the way it seems it turned out didn’t it. 🙂 I love the drive the scenery is absolutely gorgeous and the company is the best. Do you know what I didn’t see in gate city on main street I saw no Christmas decorations. God’s blessings to you and always my love from NC

When I was looking around for a place to move to, Gate City was the one I was most found of. It was Darter Street or something like that, but I moved to Rogersville and could be prouder.🤩

i am from just across the stateline, letcher/pike county and i love visiting big stone these days. they have some great eateries. good times coal fired pizza has great food and entertainment on the weekends. and 404 cafe. but if you are from or visiting this area you HAVE to check out hob nob. it is mandatory. thanks for sharing your visit.

when your food came out, I wondered why you didn't show her cheeseburger... sounds like you were disappointed. Funny how the favorite places we loved growing up, sometime aren't the same now.. One of my favorite places here in Knoxville, known for its spaghetti and onion rings.. The spaghetti is about the same, but their in-house hand-cut opinion rills, have gone to frozen onion rings from a bag.

the last time i was there was during the restrictions and you couldnt eat inside. i wanted a big ice cream so bad because they have the BIGGEST cones. but it was july and so hot, and since we were having to eat in the car, i didnt get one. i need to go back now that we can eat in.

Hob Knob is about 19 miles from BIG STONE.. (Duffield is 14 and the Hob KNob is about 5 from Duffield.)

I will be moving back to mount carmel next week to live with my 83 year old father. Estes express lines is allowing me to work remotely from his house. Going to be cool finally being back living in beautiful northeast Tennessee. I will be making a drive over to norton,va soon to eat at the wood booger restaurant. I hear their food is really delicious aswell.

Where we live, all power lines are buried underground. Haven’t seen power lines in a long time. Driving thru the small towns that’s all I saw. Interesting to me. I love small towns.
