when i drift fish for backtail with a ball sinker I always hold the bail open which allows the fish to feed on the bait without feeling on tension from the line and when it starts to swim away with the bait thats when I flip the bail back over and set the hook. It is something I have learnt to do when targeting bigger blacktail and I have had alot more success in hooking up and landing fish

thanks for the comment . for targeting shad all u need is a rod anywhere from 9ft to 12ft and any coffee grinder reel would suffice. As for targeting garrick ,it is pretty much unlikely because the garrick come up our coastline in the winter months from June to late October but you can still fish live bait to target a kingfish or prodigal sun
