We love buying classics too, that's why we picked up this bug off Copart. Mike and Ivan get the bug off the trailer, then do a full assessment of the damages and check it out inside and out. Thanks for Watching and Stay Tune for More Rebuild Video Like This.

That's actually a really nice restored bug!👍👌 those are stop watch holders on the glove box door for rally stage racing. Also that's a windshield visor not a spoiler inside the car. Reverse lock out shifter means it was built to be driven!👍 suspension also has red poly bushings so someone put some thought and care into building it, it's not just wipped together junk!

That support on the glove box lid where the 'Heuer' badge appears is to carry a pair of stopwatches, one for partial times and the other for the total time, surely that car was used in regularity rallies and it is likely that it suffered the accident in one of them, perhaps. Greetings from Spain, beautiful VW.

Missing part on dashboard is where the ash tray would slide in. The "doggie" is a wolf... that's the crest of Wolfsburg where VW is / was based. The tail lights and bumpers are from an earlier model year..... The front axle needs to be replaced. Those are what I believe are torsion tubes (front springs). It appears to be "back dated" to have more of a "Herbie the Love Bug" look (which was a rally car in the movie).

Good observations, I thought the 68 had larger tail lights, the torsion bar suspension on the front was a pretty easy swap out. Simplicity was the best thing of this design.

That’s a nice clean old beetle! Parts are plentiful and cheap from a number of different suppliers. Check the VIN and engine numbers. Easy to tell if likely the original engine or not. Entire front suspension can be easily changed. Light on center of dash is a brake warning light. Pressing the button lets you know the bulb is good. Opening at bottom of dash center is for an ashtray. Great bug and good year also. Would love to see you bring it back to driving conditions.

My first car was a 1970 Beetle. That flat spare reminded me of how the windshield washer worked in mine. There was a hose that connected to the spire tire valve and a button on the dash. When you pushed the button it would use the air from the spare to squirt the fluid on the windshield. So if you had a really dirty windshield you also had a flat spare!

Brings back so many memories. I drove a stock 1.6 litre from where I lived to my home country.A round trip of about 2000 miles including some driving around in my home country.Comfortably cruised at 70 mph. I also bought one a couple years back which had been sitting for about 8 months in the weather and not started once.Put jumper cables on and it fired right up.

the Cardboard inside cover for the instrument panel is missing... as is the ashtray center/bottom of instrument panel below the radio; What you call the rear spoiler are you sure that is not an external sun visor? Engine Valve adjustment: Cold Intake and Exhaust .006" Front suspension, easy replacement as it is a bolt on Upper and lower Torsion bar including the shock absorbers and trailing arms/front axle spindles! Bolt on front fender,hood and the inside wheel well sheet metal can be pulled straight! It will be a cool rebuild and fun to drive!

You need to replace the cover over the battery as it will short out if anyone sits in the back seat. Also check the fuel line behind the fan shroud if you want to prevent an engine fire. My brother's 71 caught on fire when the fuel line began to leak due to age. The center cap on the steering wheel is supposed to be the dark one. The light one is a replacement. As others have suggested, replace the entire front suspension. You can remove the whole setup by removing the 4 bolts in the middle of the torsion bars. I did this once on a type 3 in my driveway. I believe the bumpers are for an earlier model as are the seats. In 68 the seats were high back incorporating the head rest (first year for these seats).

That is the Jack in front by the spare tire. It slides into the piece sticking out just in front of the rear tires. It will lift both tires on each side. Crazy German engineering.
@donbooth3205
@donbooth3205 2 года назад
The button in the middle of the dash is to check brake system/fluid. The square hole under the radio is for an ash tray. On it, you will see the shift pattern. Spare tire in trunk usually powers the windshield washer set up, the the spray actually comes from the air in spare tire. In 1968, the front and rear bumpers were each one chrome bar. Also in 1968 and 1969: the front seats had standard built in head rests. (In 1970, VW trimmed the size down for better visibility. Heater controls are the levers near the hand brake. Be sure to check the heater boxes off the engine for holes and leaks. Also missing, there is a cover in the truck that covers the back of the instrument panel.

1967 was VW last year for king pin front suspension... VW later went on in 1970's with Super Beetles having McPherson Strut front suspension... There is a large well and space, behind the back seat, where the package tray would be; to place luggage or groceries... !!

Piece in back seat is actually a front visor. Missing part in dash was ashtray. Taillights are from an earlier year, 58 or 59 ish. Motor has some upgraded items but not much. Looks like it might be original. Rims are not original. BTW, no power steering. It didn't need it. The bent part in front are torsion bars. Replace that for sure. I had this same bug in the 80's. This one, other than being lowered, is relatively stock. This should be an easy rehab. Other than paint most can be done in a day or two.
@andrewdrabble8939
@andrewdrabble8939 2 года назад
A Type 1 is one of the easiest cars to work on. There are only 4 bolts holding the engine in and are fairly easy to modify. For instance lowering it is just a case of pulling the ends off the torsion bar suspension and rotating them on the splines and of course all the body panels unbolt. I would check the fuel tank with it being under the bonnet as the end could have taken a hit from whatever caused the car to be totalled and no there is no power steering on them either. 'Herbie' is going to look the dogs danglies when he's done
@carl5536
@carl5536 2 года назад
Meyers Manx made millions with the dune buggy bodies for a bug suspension and running gear...I'm guessing those bodies are worth quite a bit these days cause I'm not sure if they still make em...I remember people making rail bugs and everything out of em and what blew my mind is they'd take a 80hp engine and change jugs and pistons and whatnot and get 400hp and up out of em and they were so easy to repair lol...Just 150hp was fun back in the 70s and 60s lol. That purty white thing is a windshield visor that mounts above the front windshield

Hey Guys if you are looking for the windshield fluid container, it is inside the spare tire. you have to put air in the spare tire then connect the container to it with the hose. Then you got your windhield wiper fluid workijng.

Geez, lucky guys ! This Bug has been completely restore to new condition and Rally raced. It even has a "sport tuned exhaust" ! You can find ANY new part at *Wolfberg West*. THE place to shop. Body parts, mechanicals etc. Don't bother trying to straighten the front suspension "tube". Easily available and resonnably cheap used. But as being the uber unibody car, you must make sure the "frame" is perfectely straight. And I mean PERFECTELY. There's not much adjustments possible. BTW You had me laugh so much : "No power steering or AC" ! On a 60's Bug... Funny guys ! 🤣🤣🤣

My first car was a '68 Beatle. Paid $600 for it. Drove it for 3 years while in the service, but had to sell it when I transferred overseas. It was a unique transition model. The first year of 12 volt instead of 6 volt, and still had the generator instead of an alternator. Did most of the repairs myself. With the muffler that close to the engine, they needed a muffler about twice as often as it needed tires.
@Garcansdad
@Garcansdad 2 года назад
That brings back memories. My next-door neighbor and two high school friends had VWs. Needless to say, I was recruited to help work on them. On a funny note, if you bounce up and down on the rear seat hard enough, it will short out the battery.
@kbVACArestatecarsnrvs
@kbVACArestatecarsnrvs 2 года назад
Not questioning you guys, you have the paperwork on it, but it doesn't appear to be a '68. I had a '67 and it was the last of the older body, with low back seats, but the '67 had the full bumpers (those looked chopped) with the only year with stand alone back up lights on the mounted on the rear bumper. The '68 bug started with a little different body that was used from that point on for many years, had the side marker lights on the sides of the rear lights, had the high back bucket front seats. Some parts of this one look '67, like the body, the front seats, but I see a few accessories from the '68 inside it light the door panels and parts of the dash. Just saying. This one a bit confusing. Even to a car guy like me.

That front beam/tube that is bent houses the front torsion bars! Things are under a lot of pressure under there, so be carful! You can release the tension on the springs by that nut assembly in the center of the tube, but there's really no reason to. That front end is toast. You can see the four bolt on the end of the frame tubes that attach the whole front end. It's a piece of cake to replace the whole assembly with a replacement. As long as you get one from about the same year it will be easy to do. Later years went to McPherson suspension, which is call a Super Beetle (and nowhere near as desirable).

I owned five Bugs, Three Porsches and four other VW's. Your car looks great. I think that it is a Euro Spec car or possibly from Mexico or Brazil because of the VW 1500 on the rear. The shifter looks like a Hurst short shifter, not stock. The front suspension looks like it has been lowered and a replacement stock beam is available. The front seatbacks are also not USA spec, American cars had high back front seats from '68 on. The wheels look like Porsche 914 wheels or copies of them. If I had a '68 I'd probably upgrade it like yours has been. After you repair the body consider adding front disk brakes for safety. Have Fun

Somebody spent a lot of time and money on this bug. The tail lights are from and early 60's or 50's VW. The Volkswagen emblem on the front should be on the rear and the 1500 emblem on the rear is not original or in the correct place. One of the reasons there is so little trunk space in the front is because the gas tank is there. The bumpers are not original, they are from a pre 67 beetle with out the bumperettes. As far as the 66 Mustang goes, keep it original and don't waste your time with a giveaway, just ship it to my house or I can come and pick it up. Love your channel, I watch every episode.

The Vin number (or body tag as you some of you call it) for the car is under the spare wheel and the engine number is on the front in the middle. There should be a cover over the wiring in the front, it's just like a piece of hardboard. I am not a VW expert so I am not sure if the carburettor is original but the air filter is not. There are some other minor parts that don't seem to be original but over all it seems okay. Yes Michael those are the heater channels, they tend to rust out on a car that has been left but as I say that looks sound aside from the obvious damage. BTW the seats look original to me also. They weren't fast and they had large brakes, but were almost always hit in the front. I especially disliked assembling the glass covered headlights This ne is going to require a little pull on the front. My daily driver was a 1954 Porsche. Some of the parts had VW # ground off and a short Porsche stamped on. These is more luggage space behind the rear seat. The thing on the dash held 2 stop watches for timed distance races (rallies) Early beetles did noy have trip odometers or even a tenth of a mile position on the odometer, so an aftermarket speedo head was needed. That looks like the typical radio installed by the distriubutor. VW had a srong network of distributors. Where I was the cars went to the disribtor first where radios were installed, accessories and maybe rustproofing. Just another layer of profit Air condioning? No. The engine was air cooled the driver did not get cool air. We had one accidnt victim that found a curb at speed which was lowenough to go under the body but hit the front axle beam bending it down and back. The beam contains torsion bars, it cannot be straightened..

My first car was a 69 Beetle, loved that car, except I had no heat, the heat exchangers was rusted out, typical problem for them.

Boys have at it. You’ll have a lot of experienced “shade tree mechanics” 🤷🏼‍♂️ (I am one) out there with wealth of knowledge
