When we first started dreaming of full-time travel we imagined we would buy a school bus to convert into an RV. After doing a lot of research and talking to bus mechanics, we decided that the right bus for us to convert into a tiny home on wheels was an MCI D3.

You guys were very, very smart to convert a coach rather than a school bus. You were very smart to opt for the Series 60 engine.

Thanks for posting! I've been enjoying videos like this. Please let the van life crowd know they might be able to get free cuts from a fire department in need of training. Clearly mark all cuts to be made. Put the instructor in charge of making sure it's finished right, and let the probies try their skills inside the lines. If a bus needs a roof-raise for conversion, that's a chance for rookie firefighters to put a bunch of "injured" manequins in the bus and take the roof off to save them. First responders can always get cars to cut apart but it's not every day they get a chance to practice on larger vehicles whose crashes tend to make news.

That's an excellent choice for a coach, I used to drive these. With scheduled oil changes these go for 1million plus miles without needed a rebuild, same for the transmission. The only thing that ever went out on our fleet was the alternators but that's because they got heavy , daily nighttime long distance use. The 90's MCI's are the last of the good MCI's (ending with the 102DL3) before being bought out by Dina of Mexico. I'm probably going to buy one too, hopefully . :)

I used to drive those buses for years. Good driving bus! They don't have a great turning radius but that's OK. They drive well and you have a really smooth ride compared to a school bus which I have also driven. You also have tons of storage underneath! And you have wiring already done because each seat has a light and fan, at least where the seats were. You also already have a toilet! Great idea. How much did you pay for it? I'd love to do what you are doing.

Instead of campgrounds (money to stay there). Try boondocking. There is a web site where people will let you park on their property for free. Just remember to be courteous and respectful. I'm not sure of the name, but it's something like boondocking.com.
@Rehabit8
@Rehabit8 4 года назад
Yes totally! Thanks for the comment Robert! There are a few boondocking options we'll be looking into when we begin to travel like Harvest Hosts, Cracker Barrel and Walmart often let you park in their lots for free and BLM land. We did find an app too that lists a spots for boondocking with all the details on each. I'm blanking on the name of the app too.....so if anyone remembers the name of the app or website please share!

Hi Jose, We looked and looked for almost a year. I used SearchTempest.com to search all of craigslist 3-4 times a week and also search all of Facebook market place. We eventually narrowed our region of search to just west coast and south west because we found that buses that lived in winter/road salt parts of the country aged hard and rusted . We also called the number of MCI’s used bus department and they were really helpful. Even if they don’t have a bus your looking for they might know who does. Good luck!

Good day Rehabit8 I'm in the process of looking into buying a bus like your self . Do I need to convert it into a livable home before I get rv tag? I live in California and the day I buy it do I need to have a noncommercial license so I can take it home ?
@Rehabit8
@Rehabit8 4 года назад
technically no, you do not have to have it as a livable home, however, you do need it converted the title to an RV/Motorhome/House Car as a personal vehicle and not a commercial vehicle. In CA it can be difficult to change the registration as many DMV employees/managers don't understand the process or paperwork. Look into hiring a licensed CA VIN verification services. A guy will comes out and look at your bus and fills out a form that the CA DMV will accept as proof that your vehicle has been converted into a RV/Motorhome/House-Car. At that point the DMV will be able to issue you a registration. Our guy charged about $100 bucks for visit and VIN verification. Many of the VIN verification guys will do the form if you simply have bus seats removed and talk them through your plan to add necessary changes to make it a RV/Motorhome/House-Car. This will save you from having to go to the local police department or have the DMV approve your conversion really is a RV/Motorhome/House-Car and NOT a commercial vehicle. Be sure and read through the official DMV documents to make sure you are prepared as they do make updates and changes all the time.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t a tiny home on wheels an RV?
@Rehabit8
@Rehabit8 4 года назад
Hey Cory, possibly :) a Recreational vehicle isn’t necessarily designed to be lived in full time like a home is. We’ve looked at dozens of manufactured RVs and even rented a couple RVs and we would never want to live in those full-time as a house. I guess for our thinking we want to build this house out as a home customized for us to live in it full-time and since it’s on wheels.... thanks for the question

@Rehabit8

Hi Laurin, we spent 17.5 for this bus. It was a lot more than we originally set aside especially considering we started by looking at school busses for 8k! But after looking at over a dozen busses ranging from 8-20k this was the best one we had seen. No exterior visible rust and only 200k miles on the current engine. Plus the seller was a "proper" bus company with 15 years of maintenance records and our contact at MCI knew the bus and the owners and gave us his approval.
