Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

I almost teared up at very random moments because the realisation hit me : what you guys are doing is what life is supposed to be about. Building a home. Farming the land. Riding bikes with the sunset setting the sky on fire. Having animals you care for... Can't wait to see the rest

Yes, I agree 100%. More and more people are realizing the same, that life is about freedom and adventure, and are going out of the cities. I love that and I believe that it is the way to change the world and free ourselves.

At the age of 44, we moved to Alto Alentejo, Portugal in October 2002. We rented initially, buying our house in June 2003 completing it's renovation within the first year. We moved back to the UK temporarily in 2005, resumed working and saving, before moving back to Portugal permanently in April 2013. Still here, poorer, infinitely happier and healthier. Britain seems so much worse now than then, whereas Portugal just seems to get better year after year. We'll never, ever go back. I'm 66 this year and will never leave our Alentejan home and life in Portugal.

Come to Australia, no language barrier, blue skies nearly every day, beautiful beaches...choose your temperature environment ranging from very cold to tropical to semi arid to arid. We have it all. Anywhere off the coast and away from the big cities is very affordable. Come visit first but plan to spend at least a month. Australia is a huge place and you need to experience a lot of zones. Recommended in Late Spring (ie your late autumn) Land in Hobart...Tasmania trip around for 5 days followed by Victoria... spend a week crossing towards the Victorian and South Australian border to Mildura. Then across to the wine country in South Australia (The Barossa). On the way visit Lake Mungo with its sand lunets...amazing. Travel back through the outback (only) a day either side. ...visiting Broken Hill, heading back east to Dubbo then up through the back highway to Toowoomba. Fly north to the Atheton tablelands, see Rockhampton then fly back home from Brisbane. You will have experienced all of the zones in this trip and will have seen about 15% of the country. Just make sure you do it outside the Rainy seasons of winter and summer. Winter in the cooler regions and summer in the hotter regions of Qeensland. So Spring or autumn here but Spring is prettier in my opinion....everything is bursting into life. So early April or Early October

@@nellieblighhill4575Unfortunately for us Brits, the visa requirements for both Australia and New Zealand are very strict. For starters, they don't really want anyone over the age of 50 and you need relevant skills according to their current skill shortages listings, or you have to be an entrepreneur with a transferable business, or simply very rich (a minimum amount to invest in the country's economy 'every' year. And it is no small amount!) If I could motivate my husband to get out of Britain, we had pots of money, and there was a job waiting for our son who still lives with us, I'd be packing our bags now, I can assure you of that. Britain is getting worse by the week, and our politicians focus on stupid things while the 'real' problems get more and more out of hand. (For instance: fighting broke out between French police, people smugglers and migrants as they fought to get into boats and cross the channel very recently. This is what we have coming our way right now, every day - violent, vindictive young men prepared to attack and kill each other turning up by the boatload on our beaches. Our politicians? I don't even know what they're doing any more. Nothing at all it seems. Even worse, here in Scotland, we've had our rights to freedom of speech taken away from us by what is supposed to be the Scottish Nationalist Party. A bunch of spineless wimps more like. Personally, I would urge potential tourists to stay well away from this country and to make the effort tell our national tourist board why you're doing so. I don't holiday in England any more because once I was accused of doing something I absolutely did not by one of these 'newcomers,' the proprietor of the business we were patronising so spineless she reimbursed the other party and tore a strip off me ( yes, I objected, but she just continued accusing me in front of the 'newcomer.') Then, only 2 weeks ago, another of these newcomers, muttering prayers, walked slam into me, as if I wasn't there, his eyes out of focus like he was on something. No apology, even though he walked right across my path and into me. We're hearing the updates of yet another who stabbed a young mother; he has just been picked up and arrested by police. He'll be out in a few years. Our justice system is as soft as those who eagerly hand out tax-paid cars, phones, interpreters, houses, etc to those stepping off the boats. I think there will be an exodus of Brits over the next few years, but only among younger working people, those with active profitable businesses that can offer employment in their target country. The pensioners and infirm will be left behind to survive as best they can in an ever threatening environment, unless they can bring wealth with them. I've been looking around at the prospect of emigrating for a few weeks now, and none of the countries that I would consider are willing to consider pensioners with our sort of wealth level. (I'm not in debt or drowning in mortgage, but I most certainly can't invest the equivalent of hundreds of thousands into another economy 'every' year). So, don't visit. Poor old mother England isn't worth your time any more.

The new reality on the New Earth is exactly what you are doing. I began mine in 2011 moving with my partner from Rome to my parents' small town in Sicily. My father's 4.3 hectare family farm had been in the family since the late 40s but it had been abandoned since 1986 and it appeared like a an overgrown forest of citrus, olive and pine trees, a den for foxes and reptiles of every species. Well, I cleared it all up spending a minimal amount and am continuing on this new life-path journey. Your soul will thank you!!

You should look into building swails on your property that empty into a collection pond at the bottom of a slope. You can harvest a lot fo water this way in the rainy times and use it water and protect your property during hot seasons. If done correctly, you can make the swails around your trees, which offers them water longer as well.

It is when one watches it like this that one can see how far you have come and how the property is coming together. The pile of floor rubble has now gone to secure your driveway, everything is used to make improvements. You must feel a great sense of achievement❤

The grass under your trees will compete with the trees for nutrients as it regrows after every cutting session. Ultimately it will starve the trees. Best to mulch around the trees for their health and leave the grass longer all the way out to the drip-line as the feeder roots reach out past the canopy edge. Lovely animals!

Since you have got the space and lots of grass, having a chicken tractor might be a better option that a chicken coop. A chicken tractor is basically a chicken coop with wheels and no floor, that you move around the property so the chicken will be able to graze on fresh grass every time you move the tractor to a new spot in the property.

I had a big beautiful vegetable garden and chicken’s. I was having issues with garden pests and eventually I built the (long) chicken run running around the perimeter of my veggie garden area. The run was about 4 feet wide and acted as a chicken forcefield. It actually worked really well ha ha. The chooks obviously scratched freely during the day, but when they were in the chicken run, any bug wanting wanting to get into the garden had to either climb over or run the gauntlet of my chicken army. I miss that old garden, but I know that it is still going strong and being looked after ❤ Thanks for sharing your adventures and for bringing back nice memories for me.

I used one of those pump-to-pressurise water sprayers for years. As I was watching you, it dawned on me that you could forego the pumping if you hung it just higher than you needed it to spray.

It hit me watching this that many of our ancestors worked this hard and had to be creative with solutions. They were our testament and were soundly married as a partnership was required for effective life. Its an amazing job you two. And oartly because of your work amd success we came to portugal too. Been here for a year now and loving it even if its hard somedays. Knowing you did it too, makes it worthwhile. Hugs xx
