Never know why they lost their belongings either. After 2020, I wonder how many people die, their landlord puts their stuff in a locker, and family never collects it. It's very sad. SO many reasons that could literally happen to anyone. I never judge.
When a person dies and their stuff need to be moved out, their kids put them in storage intending to come back and never do! So that’s the reason why crap is stored… most of the time.
And sometimes people have to leave their home quickly, maybe evicted, & have nowhere else to put their stuff so opt for a unit, then can’t afford to pay for it. Kind of sad if you think about it.
Those are the OK units but the best units are the ones the grandparents store all there life long collectibles after they down sized, they pass away and the kids don't know about the unit or don't bother paying what's owed to go through it . Certain units make me sad but that's the cycle of life

As someone who does this for a living this is a pretty typical storage unit. They get much worse than this. At least this was organized, not full of mouse poops, dirt and dust, etc.
It saddens me to see somebody lose their storage unit. Sometimes people have to go in the hospital and other people are packing for them. I just throw stuff together whether it be food or not I just cleaning out the place for them. But somebody’s life got turned upside down.
I know this feeling when you buy something online as a non-smoker and it smells heavy like old cigarette smoke when you get it. Here in Germany a lot of people smoke and it's quite impossible to buy something used/second hand like couches, clothes, pillows, plushes, books... on any reseller platform without specifically asking. Some sellers will lie to you, or say it won't smell like smoke, but if they are heavy smokers they get "blind" for the smell. Some even get offended about me asking, because they feel insulted when I won't buy their stuff, because it's smelly. They take it personally.

A good wash with 1-2 cups of white vinegar in combination with your regular detergent will get out bad odours (like cigarettes) out of fabric. I would personally give it a second wash without the vinegar, but that is optional. Just in case you found anything worth keeping.
My husband councils people with financial struggles and one of the first things he asks is “how many storage units do you have”. It’s SHOCKING how many pay far more each month than what the items are even worth.
I volunteered at a goodwill. They put everything in a giant dryer after spraying it with a spray. If not goodwill donate to a homeless shelter or women's shelter. When you have nothing even clothes with smoke smell are greatly appreciated
Oh hey, you may know this trick but I had a nice Victoria secret purse that reeked of cigarette smoke, and I but coffee grounds in an open baggie, and like 5 or 6 dryer sheets and put it inside the purse then stick the purse inside a trash bag for a day. And it worked perfect. And that purse was really bad, I'm surprised at how well it worked. Maybe try that on the purse.
That Magnalite IS sweet tho! Try putting an open box of baking soda inside the handbag when you air it out. It will absorb a lot of the odor. On a scale of 1-100 I give Mose a 125. Love to Mose!
Love the video. I worked for Goodwill and we just sprayed the clothes with Febreze. I sold a stool similar to that one for $100. It was Ethan Allen. The freezer will kill the smoke smell also.
I loved this video so much. I hope you can do more storage units. There is an excitement side to this and I enjoyed every box opening. I know you would’ve hoped for a financial gain but this was great for us viewers. Real life. Real people and very interesting. Better than that staged storage show on TV. 100% real. You have Cabbage Patch Kids and My Child dolls! Loved them both. I still have my My Child doll and I 46, but that could be because I lost all the rest of my dolls to a flood long ago in my parent's basement. They are definitely vintage and if you have their original clothes could get you over $100, otherwise closer to $30. They were so special back in the mid 1980's because their bodies were made of soft cloth and you could design them to have your hair, eyes, and skin color. :)
I immediately recognized those My Child dolls too. I still have two of them. It was one of those things that I begged my parents for so when I finally got them they were cherished.
There’s odor removal stuff you can buy to remove smoke smell. The box of thread is worth way more than $1 … I got one that size for $30 at an estate sale!
Sorry to see you didn't do great. I call storage unit auctions a scratch ticket most of the time. I just bought one for $20 that I made nearly 13k in profit on. So, you can get lucky. I put the videos on my RU-vid channel of it. Good luck in the future!
Sometimes the items that you think aren't worth anything are the ones worth the most. Like the dolls being better than the Cabbage Patch. Also, the cassettes might surprise you. I'd imagine you might get quite a bit more for them... Not saying you should check every little thing, but sometimes it's worth doing a quick check on. Also check the jewelry a bit more. Some of my best finds have been the ones that I just decided to check even though I thought they were odd and probably not worth anything.
I had a co-worker who complained about the cigarettes smokers I'd just shut the door & take the $250 loss instead of complaining. I operate a storage facility at lot of people lose the storage spaces due to life happens it could be job loss, death, divorce & many other issues most people don't want to get rid of the personal property papers ECT. It's a good ideal out of respect to return to the facility the personal papers to the office. Good luck finding treasures.
Some of the clothing brands are Y2k. The item with a cat is Baby Phat clothing. Any wide leg embroidered jeans are good money too. You might want to look some of it up.
I volunteer at a community thrift that the funds are used to stock their food pantry and with the hard times they are providing a blessing for hundreds of families. They also provide other services by providing vouchers for those that are in need of clothes and shoes, utilities and more. The clothing, shoes and purses that they don’t keep go to a company that gives them pennies for the pounds. They don’t sell the clothes that smell whether it’s smoke, moth balls or some other unpleasant smell. If they didn’t have the company picking up weekly they would be putting in the dumpster and having to pay to have it emptied more frequently. Being a small thrift they have to be selective on items they keep to resell. Giving the clothes you aren’t keeping to a shelter or missionary group or church is better choice than goodwill. The best way to get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke odor is to wash the items in a vinegar solution. One cup of white vinegar in a load of laundry is usually sufficient to completely remove all traces of smoke. I have had a few items that needed to be washed twice, but it’s rare. Sadly, those were items that some of my family members gave me for Christmas. I have also used vinegar in my steam cleaner to remove the odor from upholstered furniture. The great thing is, vinegar doesn’t just mask the odor, it removes it, and once rinsed, the vinegar smell is also gone.
Thrift Stores In Ga or at least around griffin and surrounding counties have big washing machines and dryers they use and they use several different types of cleaners and odor control and vinegar and some other things to make sure the clothes will be safe for people to try on and buy!
Josh and Haley, Ozium is a product that neutralizes cigarette smoke. I have never smoked, but I grew up in second-hand smoke. There are many neutralizers on the market, however, I am only familiar with Ozium, which is not a room freshener. The Magnalite roaster is a great find!❤

People often are forced to move quickly and then a storage unit is rented much like this one. Of all of the storage units that I have purchased, this one seems to be like some of them. It seems like someone put a lot of an apartment into that unit. For whatever reason, they then are unable to pay the bill and lose the unit to an online auction. Great video and an interesting storage unit. The smell that comes with some units is so bad, I can just imagine what you were dealing with in this one. This shows people that the chance is real to purchase a bad or mediocre unit. Have a blessed week and keep the great videos coming.
The knee scooter gave me flashbacks to two ankle surgeries. My first scooter I gave away to my boss for his toe surgery, then I had to have surgery on my other ankle. Sigh, but Bonnie Blue (scooter #2) is permanently residing in my crochet room. But you can probably sell the one you found, just brakes and screws need tightening.

I don't think storage units are a good fit for you all. I know you apologized for putting most everything in the land fill, but... it's in the land fill now.....I think sourcing at the bins, thrift shops and garage sales is a better fit for the time and effort you two can afford and devote. ozone machine, dryer sheets and baking soda in sealed totes in the sun If it's washable, vinegar baking soda oxyclean gain scent pebble things pick your combo. Even with all that I had a blanket at one point I couldn't wash the dog out of.
We watch your content all the time today You downgraded a lot of people talking about low end clothes and cigarette smell. Believe it or not there are smokers that follow you and people that can only afford those low end clothes. People that would be grateful for those items.

Hello Just letting you know, the two dolls with the one cabbage patch doll are called my child and can be worth 80.00 to 500.00 dollars depending on doll ..and an be washed in the washer…but no to be placed in dryer..

My husband made a burger for my daughter’s boyfriend on our blackstone and he said it was the best burger he ever had. We’ve done chicken and rice too and it was amazing.
I imagine that the reason for finding food and other miscellaneous items is one of two things: 1) A renter was evicted, and the landlord packed up the apartment's contents, in case the tenant showed up wanting their stuff, or 2) An older person passed away, and no one showed up to claim the contents, leaving the landlord to pack it all up, just in case a relative showed up later. I'm sure that some people would get rather cranky if you threw away yjeir mustard, etc. I don't think a landlord can just throw stuff out, even in cases of eviction. I like the storage unit videos, btw!

When my mother in-law passed and we went through a memorial bag that had sympathy cards we found some cash/bills that were in some of the cards and dates in the 50’s. Many times the kids put deceased parents belongings in a storage unit. Good intentions to go through it but end up deciding to leave it because paying monthly becomes a problem. Or someone falls on hard times and no place to keep belongings due to their circumstances. So many possibilities for the reason things were put in storage. So many sad stories why it went unpaid. I’m going to have to look online for one of those. By the way. I think a lot of people like buying seashells. I’m a potter and I love using big clamshell seashells to make trinket dishes. Not even close to being a 1 on a scale of 10, but you did overpay. Good thing you can use the footage to recoup some of your costs and that you weren't too far from home. I would score that unit as a 4-5., since it was relatively clean and was mostly packed for transports (in boxes and bins), but you did have the smell issue. A unit score of 1 has real issues and not just lost money and time. Some I've had included cremated remains, hazardous waste, leaking roof (so everything is wet). Food left in the unit that attracted rodents and insects, bags of unwashed underwear with the poop still in a gamer's unit, stolen property, drugs, nesting rats, pet urine, someone living in the unit and surprisingly, a unit put together as a "manager's special" made to look good in the photos, but actually staged with leftovers from other auctions and unit clean-outs. That unit was middle of the road. Not a real winner, but average.
Very true, some clothing will surprise you how much it can sell for and you can lot it up. FYI: take all your metal to the scrap yard and get paid for it. Never toss the metal kitchen stuff out.
curious facts: back in the 50's doctors would recommend cigarettes smoking to their patients for nerves LOL so much for " science". Also our military back in the 50's gave cigarettes to the troops as rations ...
You have to break or cut the small red tag. It's a numbered seal, to sort of prove to you that no one was back in the unit after the office did their thing. Usually, they put them on after they've opened the unit and taken photos. Often, on-line auctions will have a photo of the tag number in the auction listing, so you can later check that it hasn't been changed out. They are one time use, so ave to be clipped or broken, then discarded. The red padlock, was put on by the office, it's the only real security and keeps the original renter from coming back and churning the goods, once the office has marked it delinquent. They call the Red Lock the "overlock" and it gets put on as soon as a renter defaults alongside the renter's lock, while they wait to see if the Renter Pays up. That's why the latch has two sets of holes. Then, once the renter has defaulted long enough, the renter's lock gets cut, leaving the Office Red Lock in place to control access. Lots of places paint them Red (or some other bright color) so they know at a glance that the unit is in default status. Emptying storage units was one of my 2 prime inventory sources for about a decade. Once the biz shifted from live in person auctions, to on-line, it became more challenging, but meant you could bid from home. It took some getting used to, because it had different challenges then live sales, but could be just as much fun once you won the bid. 😉
I'm struggling a bit with the tone in this video. Y'all are typically so gracious and empathatic when it comes to other folk's backstory. But the amount of times the word junk or trash to refer to their stuff was offputting. There are so many backstories for why this unit had what it had, and in the condition it was in. Contents Owner could have been evicted, could have lost a job resulting in needing to move in with family, they could have died and their children were in a different country (a couple of things pointed to these person(s) not being natural born Americans), this could have been a DV scenario, or a medical thing. Just so many potential reasons why this intimate of stuff would have gone into a storage locker. My 2 cents. I do like the alternative content AND that you are showing a realistic result.
I felt like you guys were kinda condescending while you were going thru this unit. Everybody doesn't have high-end things to put in storage, like brand name clothes, etc. But, obviously, it meant something to them. The cigarette smell is something else, tho..
You can get (rent or buy) an Ozonator which removes odor by taking out oxygen. Do a room, just no pets or plants in room, run a day or night or? Air out before spending time in there. It kills odor in carpets, clothing whatever.
Abandoned storage units, estate sales, etc make me sad. These items were someone’s life, and they obviously didn’t have or couldn’t afford much. I always wonder what happened in these people’s lives that their belongings were shoved in a storage unit. Whoever it belonged to, God bless her and if she’s no longer with us, may she rest in peace. 🙏🏻
You both are very young. Take it from an old lady, people never put their entire life inside a storage unit with the intent of never returning. If someone dies, their landlord or friend has no choice but to clean out the residence. They will put things in a unit, and give the info to their family. Some family cannot travel to come pick up or just don't care. I have seen so many things happen to good people, where they were put into horrible situations at no choice of their own. Please be respectful when going through their things. This unit broke my heart. May have been a nice lady like myself who passed, or ended up in a hospital or nursing home. Just something to think about guys. Love you both.
Don’t you give any personal stuff like paperwork and such back to storage facility for owners to get back? I’ve some places don’t take the stuff but I’d rather they get it back if they can than throw some personal stuff away they may need for future or family stuff. JS
I make a delicious Guinness Beef stew with my Instant Pot. We just made a full 5 pound rib roast with potatoes and carrots last weekend. 1.5 hrs and a full dinner was ready, 😋😋😋
There is a lot of vintage there, between purses and clothes. Grandmas property likely and back then smoking was promoted. Often vintage smoke stuff deserves a cleaning.
Once in a while a blind local unit can be fun, but as a business model you have to bid on what you can see, looking closely at the photos and judge the condition based only on what you can see and not what you hope for. If all you see are totes and boxes, you have to take a "guess" on how many bins and boxes there are. The size of the unit will be in the listing details and you can use the vertical metal beams on the sides and back to determine how much of the listed space is actually filled. It's a math exercise. Then assign a dollar value per container and then do the math, yup, another math problem. The overall appearance and some facts, like heated or not heated help you decide if the number should be $5 per box or $25 per box. Tubs can count as part of the value, if you can either use them for the biz or even sell them locally in lots. Otherwise you will be doing a lot of work (and it is work) for very little return or even take a loss once you factor in time, fuel and fees. The carts are their for any customers use and you guys are customers, since you have paid for the unit. Keys make a good knife for tape, until you find one in the unit, just don't loose your keys.
True, on-line auctions don't disclose smells and that has always been an issue. Same is true of pet smells. Carefully look over the photos for things like pet carriers, pet toys and cat trees for clues. Pet urine smells can be as bad as cigarette smells to get out and often makes most soft goods about worthless (or at least more work to prep for sale), leaving only the hard good to profit from and smells can really hurt the value of books. Live auctions don't have this problem, but have their own issues, such as traveling for a sale and then not getting anything or standing in the rain waiting for the bidding to start. Or, my least favorite, having them say 20 units are going up, when they post the sale, but fining out after a 2 hour drive that there are only 2 left on the morning of the sale, after the defaulters redeemed their bill. They can usually do that right up to the point where the auctioneer says "Sold".
I'm so disappointed in how rude you were, you don't know if the person has died 😔 By law you have to store very thing while they look for family. That is why their is personal papers. If you don't have anything good to say. Best say nothing!!!😢
Wear gloves. Please for your safety. Digging around in random people's things sometimes is dangerous especially from needles and now fentanyl. I've came close several times in a unit with drug paraphernalia.
For buying units typically people look for something in a posted picture of the unit that might have value. Like a tote of collectibles, shoe boxes, something that looks like a safe. This unit didn’t look like it had anything of value.

I'm allergic to smoke and I use Bio Clean Bac-out on our suitcases whenever we have to go to the in-law's. It's the only thing I found that seems to really work. I don't know about decades old smoke though.
Soak the clothes overnight in baking soda and vinegar, 2:1 ratio, prior to washing. May need to do it more than once. Of course if the clothes aren't worth selling if no smell, don't bother.
Must suck to be the person who owned this storage unit and probabaly fell on hard times and couldn't afford the payments anymore and some people buy and just begin calling your stuff just junk and throw it all away. Im fairly certain there is a way to storage unit place can get ahold of the previous owners and at least offer their documents and "junk" back instead of it going to the fill.
