That crane kick Seanic did is inaccurate. The proper way to do the karate kid version of the crane kick is to use the leg you are standing on to perform the jump and the kick then land on the leg being held up. The leg being held up is not the leg that you extend to kick your opponent.

For the record, Seanic got the kick wrong. The form is similar, but the execution is entirely incorrect. The kick is essentially a "hop" than a jump. It's to build momentum ever so briefly in order to deliver a slightly stronger kick. While at the same time the kick is not seen with no "tell" or signal that it is the intended attack. From the one leg-raised standing pose, you hop to gain minor air off the ground and scissor kick (switch legs in mid-air) with the leg you stood with at the start. That leg is the kicking leg. The starting form does not matter with which leg is raised first. It's a comfort thing of which the combatant can preferentially utilize. If you are left-sided dominant, you obviously want to use your stronger kicking leg to deal the greater blow. After all, the kick is a sleight of hand move intended to thwart the opponent's ability to read what is coming next.
