Lots of work being done in the garden over the weekend. It's time to clear out and clean up the greenhouse. The tomatoes and peppers have come to the end of their season and I've chopped back the herbs, planted up any I'm keeping and moved some indoors onto the kitchen window-ledge.
We've also insulated the greenhouse against the winter cold with a layer of bubble wrap. That was fun.

I'll be curious to see how this turns out for you. I'm wondering if you might develop moisture condensation on the inside glass if the bubble wrap isn't completely sealed from the interior. Thanks for posting.
@eliandkate

Condensation is one of the things I am watching for as normally I do see a lot of condensation first thing in the morning. I'm keeping an eye on temperature differentials and humidity, will update you guys in due course.

Also, you can overwinter aubergine plants in the same way as pepper plants! Definitely worth a try if you’re growing them

Do you also heat your greenhouse? What brand of heater do you use? Thanks in advance. Buying bubble wrap today. Debbie Wilson

I don't heat it in winter no. It would just be far too expensive but I use the heater in spring, just overnight when the nights are still cold. I talked a bit about it and my heater in the video I did ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rVkv-WMdZFc.html

How is the temperature in your greenhouse compared to last year (if your data goes back that far). Ps.. hope your on the mend soon 👍🏻🤕🤒
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 3 года назад
Hey Chris, afraid I dont have data from that far back but from the last couple of months I can see that the bubblewrap is keeping the greenhouse a degree or two warmer than outdoors during the night. The big test for me is about frost protection. Last year even with fleeces, my plants were still frost damaged when they were in the greenhouse. Fingers crossed.

Ha ha ha. It didn’t last long... the horticultural bubble wrap is super strong so it takes the fun right out of it.

Sorry this is quite an old video so I'm not sure what we may have spoken about specific to cleaning that you don't understand. Generally the glass greenhouse is much much easier to clean than our old polycarbonate one.

Love it Eli & Kate! 👌🏼 I’ve already told you I plan to do this when our greenhouse eventually goes up 🙈 have you seen the videos of people insulating with bubble wrap from both sides though? Inside and outside 🤦🏻‍♀️ not sure if that’s a step too far 🤣 but deffo a way to keep the cold out and the heat in! Just don’t think I’d have the patience to try it! 🙈 a tip I did see that I’ll use is to just use a marker to label what sides go where (left door/right door) for re using the following year 🤷🏻‍♀️ will have to see how it goes! But another instalment of yours well enjoyed! 😁👍🏼

My plants slightly different than yours. I plan to section off a portion of the greenhouse to overwinter various plants. What I'm going to do is to stretch wires along the length and width of the 'house and then hang the bubblewrap from that, probably using clothes pegs? It will form a mini greenhouse within the bigger greenhouse.

Hi Eli...hope you’re feeling better. Now that the bubble wrap has been in place for a while have you see the greenhouse temps stay warmer at night? Last night was our first frost and it got down to 1 degrees C outside and it was the same temp in the greenhouse. I didn’t bubble wrap the entire greenhouse like you so wonder if that is my issue.
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 3 года назад
We haven’t got temperatures that low yet but I was asked about the bubble wrap the other week and I took some readings. Not a miracle worker making it suddenly summer in there but we knew that. However, it is noticeably warmer in the greenhouse than outdoors, to give you an idea of the temperatures in my greenhouse (average) Non insulated (so no bubble wrap and no heating) Thur 8th Oct outdoors overnight 4C Greenhouse 4C Frid 9th Oct outdoors overnight 3C Greenhouse 3.5C Sat 10th Oct outdoors overnight 4C Greenhouse 4.5C I then added bubble wrap for insulation but still no heating Sun 11th Oct outdoors overnight 4C Greenhouse 5C Monday 12th Oct outdoors overnight 5C Greenhouse 6.5C Tues 13th Oct outdoors overnight 4C Greenhouse 7C Wed 14th Oct outdoors overnight 9C Greenhouse 11C Thur 15th Oct outdoors overnight 6C Greenhouse 7C

@@eliandkate here in Lexington it can get down to an average of -3 degrees C in January. Typically it is a bit warmer throughout the winter, -3 is average. Record is -31 C.
