Hi, we are Stephen, Jess, Hunter and baby Koa - an Australian family who have had quite the journey. After travelling the world as a couple in 2020 we had our very first baby, we then spent the following year self-converted a van before moving into it full-time to drive around Australia. Cut to 2023 we welcomed our second child Koa into the world before resuming full-time travel around the world.

@@flyingthenest The taffy or caramel apple, just like Americans to put candy on fruit. The cowboy or chuck wagon triangle dinner bell, didn't realize that wasn't well known. The potato skins which are made from regular potatoes and a normal appetizer found at bars. You cay buy potato skin chips. The Ren Faire by me is up all year round although they only operate weekends in summer.

Renaissance Fairs are kind of big in the US. They are like Medieval Times, but outdoors. Lots of knights, jousting , medieval feats and plenty of Renaissance role playing. The Texas one is the biggest, but here in PA, we have the 5th largest one in the country. Hope you had a blast!

I love that you randomly went to a Renaissance Fair without any context! They are pretty big deals in the US. Wisconsin has a huge one in Bristol that is well worth the trip!

That cactus is probably around 100 years old. It takes 20-50 years for them to reach 1 meter. Damaging a saguaro cactus will result in a fine and up to 25 years in prison. The triangle was used to call people in for meals.

Yes, Renaissance Festival are a thing in this country. They are all over, big ones and small ones. I worked at the big one in Michigan for several years. In answer to your question, yes those buildings are permanent and not taken down off season, except for maybe the tents.

If you love seeing the old gold fields, when you come back to Australia, I recommend coming down to Victoria and going to visit Sovereign Hill here in Ballarat. You will absolutely love it. Lots of fun activities for all. It's very similar to the ghost town in America. Everything is based around the 1800s including what they wear. Kyral Castle is also a step back in time. It's a medieval place. Very similar to where you guys went. 10 mins out of ballarat. The kids would love both places

This might be the same Renaissance Faire group I used to see to every April-May near Dallas, Texas! After going for a few years and realizing the roaming characters seemed to know the shop workers very well, I learned all the characters and workers are basically a huge carnie community that travels across the US, setting up this same festival for 1-2 months in each place. Most of the rides and carts fold down onto trailers they can tow on the road. They pick destinations based on where it is warm but not too hot in the month they're there, and they come back every year to the same fields on the same dates. The workers all live in their own RVs, vans, tiny houses, gypsy caravans, etc. and have their own hidden RV park right next to the festival grounds. This allows them to live on site and travel together for like 9 months of the year and take the winter off. It was my understanding they are all independent workers, so not all of the same people go to every location on the tour. And some people only work the faire that comes to their town, so they don't travel with the core group. For the Dallas festival, it is held in a farm field outside the city, where some of the buildings are permanent structures (like the blacksmith and glass blowing forges), but they are boarded up and only used for this one faire. I don't know if each location has permanent buildings like this or if there is a company that runs the whole tour, but it is always a very fun and well-organized festival! Glad you got to experience this unique slice of the US.

I went to Goldfield a hand full of years ago. So much fun. I love comparing old pictures and new pictures of places. But I never saw any. Just pictures of movies filmed there. So I asked someone who worked in the shop. They said...Well...turns out the only real original stuff was the equipment left behind. Not really the buildings. They were built mainly for the movies and TV shows. But still a super cool place. Had a bear at the saloon with my friend with an amazing view of the Superstition mountains 😊❤

Loved this! My Grandfather was a gold miner. My mother was born in a gold town in Nevada just outside a gold mine. If you visit California...go to Columbia. It is a gold town where you can go into a still active goldmine. We in northern California also have a Renaissance Faire. It is in Sonoma County and operates ever fall. So much fun. We also have a Dickens Faire at Christmas every year in San Francisco. You are all having such an adventure and Hunter will never forget it!!

We have a little Renaissance Faire in Virginia every May that I've been to several times, I've been to the one in Maryland twice, and my first one was in southern California way back in the late 1990's. It's fun to be immersed in a different time period for a day.

Potato skins are amazing!! You're right its basically a half potato with some of the center scooped out then fried then usually cheese and bacon or maybe broccoli if you're somewhere "fancy" lol and its broiled to melt everything together.. Sour cream is always a plus!!!

@@flyingthenest Traditionally, potato skins ARE supposed to be just the skin of a cut in half potato with a bit of whipped potato inside holding it together, and it is normally a white Idaho potato "loaded" with cheese, bacon bits, chives, and sour cream. They should also be "twice baked", so they are crispy on the outside and soft inside. When done right, they are delicious! This was a very popular restaurant appetizer when I was growing up in the 1990's, and that had a lot to do with the T.G.I. Friday's restaurant chain. Most grocery stores still sell the TGI Friday's version in the frozen food section, so the next time you get an AirBnB with an oven, you might like to try their frozen ones! Of course freshly made is better, but very hard to find these days.

There are several Renfare's in the US. One of the largest is about 5 miles from where I live in Texas. It is an amazing experience. Ours has different themed weekends. The Christmas market weekend is by far the best. But they are so much fun. So glad you got to experience this. If you ever come to Texas in the fall come bring your van and stay for a weekend. There is a huge campground at ours!

Ahh that really seems like something that I should be waiting to do to do it with my future kids but like I really wanna do it now😂 Reminds me of when my parents took me to Playmobil land (a German toy brand idk if it's only popular in Europe) and they had a whole saloon and everything and you could search for Playmobil gold nuggets in the sand😂 I mean I already loved the Playmobil version so much as a child can't imagine how cool it is to see a real Ghost town!

This is so funny to me! You guys did USA in ways I’d never thought about being only things in the United States. That ghost town and Renaissance fair. I wonder why they aren’t done in Australia, they would work out there just as well… 🤷‍♀️ I never enjoy the Turkey legs at those fairs but I’ve always wanted to own one of those dresses! You were in my neighborhood. The Renaissance Festival is a “thing” for 2 months every year. A bit of a challenge for us locals with the traffic. There's also a beautiful Arboretum nearby. Another great place to visit is Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa. You get good pizza with an unbelievable organ concert. We are definitely not wearing sweatshirts now. The temps are over 100* daily.

haha yep the traffic was prety crazy! when we pulled in i think it was like 1.5 hours before they opened so we managed to get a spot - but so glad we did it was seriously fun! Is it just there the whole time and closed for the 10 months?

@@flyingthenest The Ren Fest is only open on weekends for February and March and then it's mostly an empty lot the other 10 months. We generally don’t leave the house on weekends during that time. It is not the only event that happens in the neighborhood those months either. We also get a LPGA tournament at one of the nice golf courses and a marathon that is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Are Renaissance Festival in Holly Michigan starts in August on weekends until September an in Munising Michigan they have a boat that they take you out on Lake Superior and you take a sunset ride on the water and look at the pictured rocks and there's many Falls to go look at I think you would really enjoy it I don't remember where in Wisconsin but it brings you from Wisconsin to Michigan in Ludington Michigan. You have the most wonderful children and all that they're learning even little Koa and Hunter is such a wonderful big sister and you both are wonderful parents. Love and have a wonderful trip

They actually DO keep the buildings up all year round for the Arizona Ren faire! They pack up all the rides and tents but the buildings remain. It actually looks just like a ghost town in the off-season.

The fairs last around a month or two and seem to have their own themes. The one in Wisconsin theme is 1574 Bristol, England; Tudor, with some fantasy aspects.

Since y'all do amusement parks so well, I hope you go to Dollywood while you are in the States. It has a mountain and mine theme throughout. Nearby is Cades Cove, which was a valley in the mountains that early settlers settled in and built their homes and churches. The government took it over for a national park but it has been preserved. Once or twice a week they close the 11 mile loop so people can bike around it. Great for kids!

Hope youse did not pick up any ghosts.... Arizona is so well known for such towns. Jerome is the closest to where I live in Central Phoenix and popular with day tourists from Phoenix. Sedona, kind of a ghost town in its old core, is the most scenic spot to visit in Arizona. The Best Western there has a gr888 indoor pool for youse and your son and daughter, I stayed there in '13. Enjoy your van travels!
