We had almost a month with no rain here in NE AL. Now we've had rain for a week. I just planted squash, pumpkins, corn, beans again. There's still time for a harvest before frost. We had a year like what you've had when we lived in GA. Get some tomatoes & peppers going in the high tunnel and there's time to replant all the other stuff in the garden. With that much rain, we learned the plants need Epsom salt and fertilizers as the rain leached the nutrients. Push the fruit trees back into position, pound in some tposts and stake them up. Prune anything broken off them and prune again this fall. They will recover. Don't fret about the yard. It may look messy, but it will be fine to let it go. The garden can be salvaged. We rigged tarps over some raised beds to grow greens, etc., angling them to drain excess water away and get morning sun. We rigged clear plastic over other beds for tomatoes, peppers & whatever was struggling with so much rain. Tposts, rope for the center & strings and rocks to hold the sides, again keeping drainage in mind. It worked & we got a harvest. It wasn't as big as we'd hired, but better than nothing. And our raised beds that drained really well came through with mega produce once we added fertilizers and Epsom salts. For the chickens, put stumps, rocks, pallets, etc in the runs for them to perch/stand on. We had to trench one side of our run and berm 2 other sides to help ours stay drier. Hang in there. Trust God. Pick one thing or garden bed a day to focus on working on the solution to the problem. Soon you'll be back on track. And that year in GA where we had nonstop rain for 3 months... It went into a drought with no rainfall from July-October - the opposite extreme. We had filled all out rain barrels and water totes and mulched everything heavily. The same rain we cried at, from the water we stored, saved our garden during the drought and watering restrictions & bans. So store some of that rain water if you can.

After the water dries up, just look at your property and make an assessment of where you go from here, then once you have done that, do a video on overcoming adversity on your homestead and going forward. By doing this, you will be even more helpful to those who are considering doing this, especially me.

I commiserate with you and everyone here because of all this Texas rain. My mower is stuck, my garden overgrown so that I can't even see the pathways, my greenhouse is full of water, and there are so many mosquitos I can't even be outside. Even so, I've had more success this year than I ever had trying to grow food, most of which was the cool season stuff planted before that ice storm. I hope to get a few tomatoes and then try some more for the fall. I always get excited for a new beginning.

The rain was crazy this spring. I haven't totaled my calendar yet for May, but together with June it's over 20" in southern Ang Co. We had a couple of days of dry and heat so I got some mowing done. Then the lights went out and my generator kicked on late last night. About 20 minutes later the storm blew through here. Big winds and hard rain for about 30 minutes. My garden is doing about the same. The raised beds are doing much better than anything else. The forever battle with squirrels in the pear trees is about to start for us. Local blueberry farms are doing quite well this year. The blueberry festival in Nac had some great berries! I might do a late patch of June corn, some okra, and southern peas. In years past they seem to do better after weather like we have had recently. Good luck to y'all! We will keep on keeping on over here.

Also an East Texan, keep in mind we can also have a fall garden which is what I am considering with all this rain we have had. I am surprised at my pepper plants they are growing like gang busters and loaded with peppers. My tomatoes are doing ok but not what I would have liked. Squash and zucchini are history. I just planted cucumbers in a container as well as a squash plant so we will see how that goes. The grass has taken over my garden simply because I could not stay on top of it with all the rain. Let it dry out a bit and get things ready for a fall garden.

We understand Pete....we lost all our lemon, orange, tangerine, lime, avocado and kumquat trees! None of them came back! Trees that were 12 years old to 22 years old at the oldest. A total of 20 trees. It has changed our food forest area. That polar freeze took it all. We don't see that kind of weather in south Texas. We lost every single strawberry plant. Lost all the spring potatoes, radishes and so on. It was way too cold for all the greens. But we planted tons of flower seeds and tubers, plus bulbs. It looks amazing, lol! That rain was something else! The flowers all thrive with the rain. Stay strong in our Lord and we will be alright. HE understands more than we do, as my five year old great grand daughter told me the other day. I am old and very tired and I can't plant anymore, I am done. Just taking care of what we have left in the food gardens. But the flowers look so beautiful. Thank you for sharing Pete, GOD bless you both! In Messiah Yeshua, Amen!

I definitely agree with too much rain. We are in South Louisiana Houma area. We’ve lost a lot ,our garden flooded 3 times. Our raised beds are what saved our tomatoes , peppers, green beans and asparagus. But our squash and zucchini are not doing so great. Our cucumbers are just starting to produce. We lost half of our potatoes. Our corn is finally starting to grow. We was able to side dress and hill them about 7 day ago right before another big rain fall. Definitely got lucky on that one. But really all and all Pete we are more then grateful for what we did save. I agree we do put a lot of work in our gardens and it is very frustrating to lose all that time money and labor. But at least we saved a little. I have friends and family that lost their whole garden. Some one and two foot under water. And with that being said I find myself offering some of what we managed to save to them. It makes us feel good that we can do this and very blessed to see how thankful they are. God bless Pete and happy gardening buddy.👍🏼

I’m North Texas here and I am I’m the same exact situation. I’ve never seen anything like it. I go to my garden and it is so so depressing. The rain has done quite the number on us this year. I even lost one of my crape myrtles as well. Just couldn’t take all the water. I hate that you are going through this but also thank you for the video. Helped a ton to know I’m not alone and I’m not just failing miserably over here. I kept saying it’s all the rain but in the back of my mind I was like did I do something wrong this year. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel your pain. I am in SW Louisiana and the rain, heat and humidity has been a challenge this year. My entire potato and corn crop was a near loss. Luckily, I planned ahead and planted all of my tomato plants in 10 gallon buckets so they didn't drown, but the heat is stressing them bad and production is similar to yours. Looking forward to my fall garden to try to make up for the spring loss. Totally rethinking the way I garden in the future.

Only one of my fruit trees (apricot ) produced and we had such a fierce thunder storm more then half the fruit was blown to the ground, and that was after we thinned. I am in east central Texas. I'm gonna be hoping for higher than normal rainfall during July and August to make up the hay I've lost. All my winter forage went to seed and has laid over. Just hope it comes up in the fall because I have a feeling I'm gonna need it, plus what I normally plant to have enough winter feed.

I'm sorry to hear it. We're having the opposite problem in north Florida. We've been in a drought since April and my garden looks sparse even with regular watering. There's no substitute for rain water. Its a good illustration why our grandparents were quick to leave a farming lifestyle when they could. In Florida we lost lots of Florida-adapted varieties of common crops when the Great Depression generation died out and the subsequent generations no longer had to farm to survive. The last farming generation saw no reason to preserve the old ways. The old ways were hard and something to progress away from as they saw it.. And now my generation wants to return to it but much the knowledge and genetics have been lost. You'll prevail in the end. You know the Person who controls the weather and the crops.

Very disappointing but don’t give up ... plan for the fall season ... concentrate on chickens and other projects that you have wanted to do or need to do! You may even be able to replant some of your summer crops and still get some late harvest ... I am in your old stomping grounds and we are in the same boat but I do it on a much smaller scale ... Don't be too disheartened Pete. Some of these hardships just come with the territory (farming). It may look bad now, but it will pass. Based on some of your previous videos, most of your stuff seems grown directly in the ground. And what you've described with the soil conditions, aside from leeching of nutrients, the plant roots are also probably water logged which could lead to die off. You may need to plan for a variety of weather conditions (within reason). Raised bed gardens (similar but not exactly like the greenhouse) can be used for some of your vegetables, but then there's the cost of getting the materials and soil etc. The raised bed can help with heavy rain issues. For leeching of minerals you can try to channel runoff to a subsurface barrel etc. That way you can at least get to reuse some minerals leeched in the soil. But again, it's gonna be extra work. Some other commenters mentioned other useful tips/tricks too. Hope you can still keep at it mate. Best of luck.

My potatoes are not happy. My herbs are not happy. But they are all in raised beds, so I am going to add a little fertilizer as appropriate and hope for the best. SO SORRY about your fruit trees, that is discouraging. On a happy note, I have my new chicks and they are doing great!

I wonder how much is that the beds are in ground. Down here in the Houston area we got lots of rain for a week, then a couple weeks off and lots of rain again for a 3 day period and back to hot and humid this week. My raised beds are going nuts but the in ground stuff isn't looking that hot. I planted a bit late this year so still going and doing good with zuchini, okra, and onions. The pepper plants are still pretty small, and about to put up some shade cloth to see if that will help extend the season a bit more since it's already in the high 90s now.

It has been a bad year. We have been spared some of the rain south of Houston. I will have to plant tomatoes again in the fall.

Hang in there. My family are from Newfoundland. If you have a bit of downtime read up on their historical (& being revived) ag practices. That island ranges radically in their weather and out on the Avalon penninsula it rains neatly every day. Now yes, the soil place to place is different but the 'never quit' is strong in Newfoundland & as I said, there may be some techniques you can glean from the centuries of food production up there.

I think succession planting would help reduce the loss. I’m in St. Louis and we’ve had so many cool, rainy days that my sweet peas and kale are massive but my tomatoes, squash, beans, and watermelons are all way behind schedule. I read that it is still somewhat effective to spray immediately before the next storm so that the chemicals are still in the foliage when the rain flushes the spores from one leaf to another. Someone needs to figure out a good slow-release method during the rainy seasons, like a fungicide epoxy. 😂

Fellow east Texan, growing in Zone 8B. Luckily I planted my squash in an old water trough so those came through. Still getting green beans, cucumbers and tomatoes are developing. Not as plentiful as last year ... but that is life.

I feel your pain. I live in East TX too and same on the tomatoes and the squash vines. I have eggplants, got potatoes and onions about a month ago... but no tomatoes no peppers (stunted) and squash vines and melons are 6” tall. Just nothing. Really a struggle this year. Okra only 6” tall too. Just really bad. All my corn lodged over. We’ve had to weedeat the grass because too wet. Just so frustrating.

Maybe let the chicken run thru the garden this year. They can clean in it up and give you a nice fresh start when their done in a few months.

RAISED BEDS.....! Set-up wasp traps. Dwarf trees need to be staked, always, their root system isn't large enough to support themselves.

We are on the opposite end of you, meaning we have had about 6 days of rain in 3 or 4 months ( maybe more?). I too have not picked any tomatoes. But, by cracky they are trying! We just have to plan ahead, if you can for times such as these. If I got discouraged every time my garden went flop, I would have quit years ago. Now, I count it all joy when I can go get something from the yard, to put on the table. At least that's one meal, I didn't have to go to the store! 😊 I had to add to this, 🤣😂 sometimes, you just need to step back, and laugh it off. Really!!! Think about all of the work you have done and nothing worked, nothing helped..You can get upset, or just laugh! Choose to laugh helps more than you know. Try growing corn and even with our drought conditions, it has grown to 10 to 12 feet high.. It's beautiful.. Now, if I only had more that 1 ear of corn..True story! And the squirrels are paying close attention to it. Waiting to see If I can beat them to it.. 😂

Plants some tomatoes in your green house. We are hot and dry in NC and I have had to water my garden. Funny in a sense how some get to much rain and others do not within a few miles of each other. Good Luck Pete.

I feel for you Pete and can hear the frustration in your voice. You have a really nice greenhouse that you quickly showed, but I did not understand why you had the strawberry plants in buckets sitting inside your raised beds? I was wondering why you did this instead of planting tomatoes, carrots, squash or some other vegetables in all of those empty beds? I'm sure it's not too late to start another garden in there. I know it's awfully hot down there, but a few fans do wonders at least in our greenhouse up here in Central Oregon. Keep the faith brother for this too shall pass. Cheers

Sorry to hear about the garden. The plight of all farmers from the beginning of time. The rain in Texas resulted in most of my grandson's little league games being canceled and I traveled there a couple of weeks ago just for the tournament. Maybe you can work on drainage for your property to prepare for future years.
