In previous videos, we searched for our perfect boat. Just a few weeks ago in mid-February, we found her. This week we're on our 1976 Tayana 37 (CT37) Taiwanese build designed by Robert Perry. She boasts a teak deck, roomy quarters, and needs a lot of work, and the projects have begun! sirenwilliams@thesirenslog.com
This week, we're installing a LiTime Lithium Battery setup ( LiFePO4 ) with a DC to DC charger, and a Solar Charge Controller. We're replacing our previous battery bank of lead acid batteries because they were off-gassing and setting off our CO alarms due to the hydrogen, which creates a very dangerous situation in the boat, and literally puts us at risk of explosion. Our new lithium battery, at 460Ah, is roughly the same amount of power as the previous bank of 4 batteries, but all in one single battery, plus we still have room for more!
We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!
We do hope that you'll subscribe and follow along!

Danger is my middle name. Hydrogen sulfide gas is part of life for lead/acid batteries. But, it’s not really an issue unless you’re overcharging them. The alternator must have been pushing some serious amperage for three batteries to discharge! Hope you saved the old batteries for backups. An inline fuse would slow the charging to the batteries if you are worried about it. See y’all when you get back! Hold fast and batten down. There’s a strong front moving through the north end of the Gulf tonight. I don’t know how far it’s gonna dip down south.

That happened to me in a Semi when I was driving...4 Lead/Acid Batteries in Series and one or more were off gassing (come to find out later), and when I went to start the Truck something in the Battery Box arc'ed and the Explosion was strong enough to rock an International Navistar and reduced the Battery Box to twisted junk! Needless to say I was stuck for 7 1/2 hours in a Warehouse Door in frikkin' Newark New Jersey, but I got 25 bucks an hour for the trouble...but that was pretty scary stuff...never had a Battery explode on me before...

@@user-ku9wf3si5c yeah the size on the internet was kinda scammy. They included the sides as part of the width and length. 🙃 It wouldn’t have been much bigger anyway, but… still! Either way, I measured the spot is was supposed to go (which Hal took away at the last minute) where it would be safe for us to keep there consistently and still be able to handle lines and such, and that’s roughly what we could fit. He goes to shore constantly anyway, though, but at least this one is compact and he’s pretty smart so he just may decide to use it on long hauls.

I looked and looked for a good cargo liner on Amazon that would arrive in time and honestly didn't come up with much. I'm sure once we're home and can look across the entire internet we will find a good one, but I ended up with a similar thing, which is more of a doorway, shoe thing for boots and such, essentially the same, but when I got it in the mail I realized they cheated on the sizing. Their measurements INCLUDED the sides!!! so the actual size was almost 2 inches smaller on each side. lol But yeah, he needs something bigger, it's just hard to fit anything on the boat. He's smart though! I'm wondering if he can't handle the little one. We will see! It's all we've got now!

Strap it down or use Bungy Cords to secure the solar panel. You know that new Lithium battery will need a higher charge rate than the Lead Acid type, right? Phantom Draw Current shut everything off then check to see if there is a current draw-down? Just checking.

That is part of what he was showing in the beginning, how to change the settings with our inverter for lithium. It’s in the video. And he did reinforce the panel with zip ties, in the video as well. The panel isn’t strong where it sits, but should he encounter heavy winds, we can easily remove it until we get home and get a new davit system.

With a large solar panel like that you better attach it better, it seams a lot of your repairs and installation of systems are done as a jury rig , don’t get mad but when your life and others depends on the security and reliability of your boat everything you do must be a better standard then what your doing now !

When I read the titel I had already a question about it. Lead batteries are not known for beeing an hazard to explode. However Lithium batteries can fail in a way which will not allow you to extinguish it. litium technology has unquestionably benefits which outwaight the risks but from a savety perspective lead batteries are much mote failsave. Outgasing of lead batteries in a well ventilated enviroment ( a sailboat should be well ventilated for various reasons) is no thread at all.

@@TheSirensLog Interesting , sorry yes i've know there is a risk , but i've not heard of this actually happening in over 50 years . All lead acid batteries gas , it's a natural part of the charging . However i have heard of more Lithiums of all types catching fire in the last five years to last a lifetime . Personally speaking , i would prefer to deal with a gassing lead/acid , than a potential bomb on any boat on open water . But hey you pay your money you make your choice ! .

@@TheSirensLog never heard of it once. I would like to see some data of lead acid batterys exploding from dating as there designed to gas.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 4 месяца назад
@@mickey1299 Well many people would argue the opposite, that lead acid batteries are “bombs on boats” and while I don’t personally know anyone who has had that happen, a quick google search does turn up plenty of people who have. In the end, neither are amazing options but they’re fairly necessary. But note that when I say the batteries were off-gassing, I don’t mean that they were off gassing at normal levels. I mean they were fried, boiling, swollen, and off gassing like hell. So… that creates a very dangerous problem. If they’d been new batteries, maybe not. The point here was that when our lead acid batteries were fried, we had the opportunity to switch to lithium OR replace the entire battery bank with lead acid. If we had stayed with lead acid, we would only ever have this much power. Switching to lithium allows us to triple that power. Also, these are LiFePO4 lithium batteries which are very safe.

I don’t know much about batteries ! I would like to learn. All power banks for solar are lithium I think in homes that are off grid. It is best at any point to keep them cool. Because heat is their enemy. I had a truck that I needed start and it was dead, so I jumped started it I caused a spark and one lead acid and battery blew the top off right in my face. It didn’t catch fire but of course I had to replace it. So as far as safer I do think they are but any can have issues. One channel had a bard new cateraman that burned at the dock it was plugged in on charge and lithium batteries caught fire. This happened about a year ago. The boat was a few weeks old. Another you tuber that was on a sailboat left his phone plugged in overnight it woke them up at anchor to their boat burning like crazy and had to escape through a hatch. And had jump overboard it burned to the waterline and sank. The only thing different from usual was he left his phone on charge like he normally didn’t do. So lithium is kind of dangerous yes but be aware of the dangers, because many other things can also be dangerous living aboard. Lead acid will not burn but yeah they blow up, and will not provide the power needed to run your boat. The vapors off of them is toxic also so the dangers are pretty close, but the power difference and long life is a major benefit. Make sure they don’t over charge and stay cool, I have read heat is the cause of fires, and over charge and fast discharge causes heat problem and a risk of fire. As long as you manage that well you should not have any problems, many you tube boater channels have went all lithium and solar. In the long run it will save you money, and with enough of battery bank you can use as much electric as you need. One day lithium will replace almost all batteries on the market. The technology has improved very rapidly and much better now than before. People bashing it has it and uses it everyday in cell phones. Some even carry it in their hip pocket. Oh battle born batteries is supposed to be the best (I don’t know), is that what you guys bought ?
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 4 месяца назад
We did a collaboration with LiTime batteries so they supplied us with everything we needed, so it was a win for us! They're all quite expensive, but these are the newest tech, the LiFePO4 batteries, which aren't like the lithium ion batteries. Supposedly, these are MUCH safer. We will see!

@patrickjohn2990

Lithium is definitely the way to go. It’s cheaper in the long run than lead acid or AGM, because you get about 10 times more charge Cycles, plus you can discharge them close to 100% vs 50% for lead acid. They are very safe if installed correctly. Most people confuse the lithium iron phosphate with the Lithium iron used in scooters and cars etc. which are more prone to fires. You did mentioned adding more batteries at a later date. Please note that it’s not recommended to hook up lithium batteries of different sizes, brands or age. In my opinion 460AH is quite substantial for the needs you listed. I would like to know what type of alternator you have. If you are charging the lithium from the alternator via a dc to dc charger, its recommend to use an externally regulated Alternator where you can control the alternator output, because 😂lithium batteries are “power hungry “ and can over work an alternator. A work around is to charge your start battery (assuming it’s AGM or lead acid) from the alternator and use the DC to DC charger to charge the lithium. Be safe guys.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 4 месяца назад
Thanks!!! I will show this comment to Hal. We JUST got a new alternator. The old one was having trouble, and we suspected that basically since buying it but we are now underway and it’s confirmed. We got a new alternator on the Yanmar and it was the one recommended from Yanmar corporate.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 4 месяца назад
I’ve read your comment to Hal and I’m going to tell you what he’s saying. I understand the system but he knows the setup and what he installed better- Hal says: That’s what we are doing- we have an 80 Amp alternator and rigged to charge the starting battery, and the dc to dc charger charges from the starting battery. We’ve jumped the charger to bring the charge from 60 amps to 30 amps. We got the 60amp dc to dc charger in hopes that we could upgrade to a high output alternator later this year.

These aren’t the traditional lithium batteries, they’re the LiFePO4, which are FAR safer than other types of lithium batteries, so yes. They are safer. Also, they don’t need to be outside the boat. That would be a disaster and there’s nowhere outside the boat to install a battery bank anyway. The previous battery bank was totally fried and was off-gassing, but we just bought the boat, so this wasn’t necessarily anything we did. I am no expert. 30 years cruising gives me insights,But I am convinced lead acid off gassing or not are the safest battery's on earth. Now if you have no ventilation then off gassing is not something you want. You can make a deadly gas. But lithium could burn you right down to the bottom as a lithium fire is not extinguishable. So there's trade offs. I like lithium but not the costs and not the fire hazards. And then there's the time when equalization from the bms causes total shut down. No power. Carry a starting battery.

LiFePo4 is a different chemistry than what is used in EV’s and has a much higher thermal runaway. Also you can 100% use a battery while it is balancing.

I got info on lithium from a few source. I kicked it around the past 3 years. If you are not well schooled in lithium instal you can really mess things up. The things I mentioned are fact. However a properly installed lithium set up with quality components would be worth the risk for the rewards if I had 10k but I only had 1k so went with t105 again as I have for the past 30 years. Plug n play.

You are right, there are definitely much more considerations to take in than just dropping in a LiFePo and calling it done. I made the switch a few years ago (with all the associated) modifications and personally I would never go back to lead acid for a house bank. But to each their own on their own vessels and what they are comfortable with.

Can you provide the costs and brands, along with a rough diagram of the setup? It would really help, as I am about to undergo the same process soon. Thanks, and love the videos!

We did a collab with LiTime batteries, so they supplied us with everything! I believe prices may be on their website, and I've been asking Hal to draw me a diagram so that I understand the way everything is wired and I still don't have that diagram! hahahah

The guys who tried to sell me lithium here to go with the 1400 watts solar I bought from them recently in Thailand a aussy company. Say you really need a high output alternator with a external regulater with lithium settings. A battery to battery charger and the lithium run through a starting battery of lead acid thats charged first before lithium charges. To prevent alternator destruction and a possible lithium black out. Caused from over heating or other bms issues. I found all this expensive and way too many moving parts for my liking.lthe solar was cheap. 700.00 bucks for panels and 600.00 for regulators. I am into lithium I just don't have the money to do it right. I have 900 amps of lead acid. Costs me 1,100.00 every 4 or 5 years. The lithium would be 10k as quoted for 900 amps lithium not installed just the bits and pieces. Even though I already have a high output alternator

If your worried about Li theres LiPhosphate... If you want to go safer still and serviceable theres Blade cells long and short.. and very soon There will be Na ion.. which are next level safe and cheaper .. though heavier at the moment and they are ideal in hot and freezing cold climates. They can also handle C rates that would melt most Lithium cells.

900amps lithium is twice as much as 900amps lead acid, though, so you don’t need nearly that much! With the LiFePO4 batteries you use 90% of the battery, and you don’t with lead acid. So, it won’t cost you nearly as much as you’re thinking. The one battery we have at 460Ah is a $1500. Battery, and it’s the equivalent of 4 lead acid batteries and will last a hell of a lot longer. If we add another we will have double that, obviously, in a tight space.
