11.7 million people watching is even more impressive when you consider Canada has a population of roughly 38 million. That is like 100 million people in America watching a concert. Truly Canada's band.

Nothing brings me to tears faster than remembering that Gord's last words to all of us were "You're ahead by a century and disappointing you is getting me down". When his cancer was first publicly announced, I had to pull over on my way to work along the 403 highway because I was crying so hard I couldn't see. The leader of our country went on television the day Gord passed to announce from his own heart, through ugly tears, that Canada was less of a nation for having lost the treasure that was Gord Downey. Your heartfelt reactions to this are very much appreciated. Thank you.

I was young and didn’t really know a lot of their music at the time besides a few singles and I remember how massive this was, it’s all people talked about, and that night everything shifted to this concert. Our town set up a massive screen on the street for people to come out, drink, and watch together. Have never experienced something like that before or since. That made history.

This final concert was broadcast across the Canada, on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). It was a 3+ hour concert, completely commercial free, during PRIME TIME hour, and during the Olympics. IT just shows how special and what The Tragically Hip meant to Canada and Canadians, and friends, and why it is so special and a Canadian Treasure.

That final concert was TV broadcast, radio broadcast and internet broadcast for free so people were watching all over the world. It was a big deal. People had watch parties. Towns setup big screens in public places. One person tweeted that it was absolutely the biggest concert of the season - and the band was in another city. Canada was essentially "closed" for a family gathering. It was a evening I'll never forget.

Along with doing this in his final days, Gord Downie also got heavily involved with bringing awareness to the mistreatment of the indigenous people of Canada. He released a project called Secret Path that included a concept album and an animated movie about an indiginous kid who was one of many who died in the residential school system, and he also started the Chanie Wenjack Fund charity. Overall a great guy clearly

Thank you for this. Thank you so much. I'm from Kingston, grew up listening to the Hip, seeing the Hip and being proud I'm from the same city. They weren't just a band to us, they were a part of our roots, our country and our heritage. Often singing about real life events that happened in Canadian history and current events, singing about legendary hockey players (Gord was a hockey player and a massive hockey fan), often bringing light to topics that perhaps we weren't really aware of but should have been. These men are legends. The music will forever be a part of our great nation and the legacy will be very bright and vibrant for generations to come. Here in Kingston, we often can run into these guys on the streets with their families like they are regular citizens. They will always take the time to say hello. This is part of what makes The Tragically Hip and the country so great. While I wasn't inside the venue for the show, I was in Market Square with 30,000 other people cheering the boys on. There will never be anything like it ever again.

When they were touring in the winter, they would find a local outdoor rink and lace up the skates for a bit of ice time before their shows. I saw them in Red Deer, Alberta (6th or 7th time I saw them) in the winter of 94/95 and I went out with some friends to check out the local rinks hoping to see them. Sure enough, about four hours before their show, we found them playing a little shinny with some local kids. Absolutely the nicest bunch of guys you would ever meet.

when people talk about "the best band you've never heard of" this is literally who they are talking about. unless you live in Canada or, like me in Buffalo and a few other small pockets, mostly border towns, in the US, Then you wouldn't know them which is incredible because of how huge they are in Canada. the best way I could explain to people in the US how big they are there is that if they toured Canada with Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam would be the opener.

Having seen the band about 50 times through my life and also having attended their final show in Hamilton a few nights earlier, I was sad through the entire show. I live in Bobcaygeon, which is also the title of one of the Tragically Hip's famous songs. The main street was shut down for this concert, and 10,000 people gathered here and watched it on big screens set up along the street. Truly a generational talent. I had the pleasure of meeting Gord once in the mid-90s when the Hip were playing at a bar in Omaha. The whole band was wonderfully friendly. Sometimes it's good to meet your heroes and find out they're just regular dudes doing their best too.

@stevepaterson7503

Thank you for your wonderful reaction. Music serves many purposes. To tell a story, to envoke emotion, to make one feel. You were obviously feeling the moment. One of the reasons the Hip were treasured by Canadians was that they never sold out or pandered to attract a larger audience who might not have appreciated their true talents. They were a Canadian band who wrote and sang about Canadian things and never felt the need to apologize for it. They were a band that carried themselves with honor and integrity. They used to put on a festival tour called "Another Roadside Attraction " which was a mix of big name headliners and less known Canadian and American artists. When one of the bands laughingly criticized other bands on the tour in the media, they were promptly fired from the tour. Gord and other members of the band were constantly donating their time to worthwhile causes and never sought recognition. That they performed this final tour doing what they loved, being loved and showing love is a fitting legacy for the band they call the Hip.

Gord was so sick at the time. It was such a gift that he gave his fans. Dying of brain cancer, he embarked on a multi city cross country tour. The last show was televised nationally. Tickets were impossible to get so most venues were open for public viewings which Gord arranged to be free live streamed. I remember being at an outdoor concert site in the rain, glad it was raining so no one could see my tears. In the pouring rain, no person left.

And I want to reinforce those numbers as well. almost a third of the country, watched the show. It was broadcast in cities and towns across the country and people came out to public squares to see it. we had several thousand people show up in our town to watch it. I still can’t believe he had the energy to do this being as close as he was to the end. Incredible band, incredible performer.

My sister and my 15.5 year old dog past this summer and I didn’t shed any tears, not bc I’m heartless but bc i feel good about where they r. This man, this entity, the grandiose majestic being of a power and now the higher self strikes me with all the magnetic waves of the earth sizzling throughout my body. So like ya “balling” you should see Fiddlers Green from this concert. When my wife and i were watching it live and i looked back at her during that song because my whole body was literally electric, she was uncontrollably balling! His presence on stage is such a gift to humanity, healthy or not, his presence is simply magical!!! Cry away people, it’s a powerfully energetic state to b in when the intent is genuine love! THANK YOU FOR DOING THE HIP AND GORD! ❤

Thanks so much for reacting to this very special moment for Canadians and for music. I am from the Kingston area and remember The Hip from the beginning. I watched this last show and by the end I was sobbing. When you described Gord Downie as a beautiful soul, you have no idea how right you were. Now that you have sampled The Hip, you should check out more, I am sure you won't be disappointed. As for great music from Canada, let's add to the list: Buffy Sainte-Marie Alannah Myles KD Lang The Guess Who BTO, etc, etc.

It’s a love letter to his fans and a celebration of a life well spent!! Canada is huge geographically but small in numbers. Touring .Canada for decades, he spoke of small town life or the inequalities in our society. In other words, he was one of us. And that my friends is a very personal thing. See him in his element drawing from all his audiences energy giving him such a strong finish.

I hope you check out more of their work. "Bobcaygeon" and "Wheat Kings" are two of my absolute favourites. I think "Ahead by A Century" did air on MTV in 1996-97, but they were really only big in Canada, but that was fine for them. They only cared to tell Canadian stories. They made up a big part of the soundtrack of life in Canada, especially in the 90's when rock and grunge was big.

This band. It’s been 7 years and I still tear up seeing this. I remember that night like it was yesterday…we gathered at a friend’s house, the whole concert was projected on the back of his two-story house, we had beverages and sang at the top of our lungs for hours. We also cried for hours. It’s one of those absolute core memories.

I saw them twice. First time, Gord walked on the seats and fell on me and my friend he said "thanks boys" as we lifted him back up. One of the coolest moments of my life. Lucky enough to see them on their final tour as well. Cried multiple times during the concert. Gord was the embodiment of Canada. Long live the Hip! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

2 things that are distinctly Canadian. Tim Hortons and The Hip... I was so fortunate to see them for the 1st time on what would end up being their last U.S. tour in 2015 in Texas. Gord would end up being diagnosed 2 months afterward, publicly revealing in 2016. I actually had something come up at the time and was considering skipping and try to see them the next time they came around. So glad I stuck with going. RIP Gord

In my eyes, The Tragically Hip were to Canada what Powderfinger were to Australia. Both amazing bands who never got the global success they deserved compared to other bands. I spent 2 years traveling in 95-96 and spent alot of time that time in Canada and The Tragically Hip became my soundtrack for those years.♥️

@@ninjavigilante5311 AC/DC are a huge global band. Go anywhere in the Western world and you’ll see AC/DC T-shirts and them selling out arenas and stadiums. Deservedly so as they are a great band. So from experience I would say AC/DC are a huge global band as opposed to Powerfinger or the Tragically Hip. ♥️

When the last tour went through Vancouver, my wife and I went to the second show; I've never been in a crowd so loud and emotional before or since. The wall of love that crowd sent up lasted from before the musicians arrived on stage until well after they left. What we experienced that night seemed amplified on the night of the very last concert of the tour, in Kingston, when it was shown live at so many venues in so many communities all across Canada. CBC even pre-empted prime-time Olympics coverage to show it...

They had their own unique sound and vibe some type of Canadian folk rock with a hint of blues. Gord and the band always put on amazing live shows. Hope you guys take a dive into more of their music.

I grew up right along with the Hip. Everyone who did can remember what was going on in their lives just by listening to their songs, it takes you back to all those moments of your life. From partying with friends in school, to getting married, having kids, and playing the Hip for our kids to them loving them and listening to them throughout their lives as well. That last show was nothing short of incredible. I will always cry no matter what when watching it. In Gord we trust, forever. ❤ 🇨🇦 ❤

I was blessed to be at one of the stops on that tour. Their last ever gig in Edmonton. It's the most emotionally moving concert I've ever been to, and that's about as close as I can get to describing that feeling from that night. I can't even imagine how much higher that emotion was ramped to at this point of this show. You should do yourselves a solid and watch this whole show front to back. And then watch the documentary "long time running" that goes behind the scenes with the band, starting from when Gord announced publicly that he was terminal, through the planning and rehearsals, each stop on the tour, and this incredible night. They could have become megastar if they sold out, but they stayed true to themselves and were royalty in Canada. They say 11.7M were watching that night, but I think that's way off. We sat in a bar in downtown edmonton, and watched with about 600 other people. They preempted the Olympics in prime time, to show this concert free. Big viewing parties in public squares in cities and towns across the country. I'm fairly certain well over half the country was watching. My mom was 70 at the time, and she was never much of fan of their music. But she went to a public viewing and watched the whole concert. I still get goosebumps when I think back to that last show here, and certain songs of theirs choke me up when they come across the radio.

Thank you for watching this. My best friend (from a town near Kingston) was diagnosed with a glioblastoma just weeks before it was announced Gord was suffering from the same... and he passed just weeks before Gord did. The two are forever linked in my memories. Bittersweet. So sad for not having them around but so damn glad for having had them in our lives. Every time I watch this, it carried that double meaning. No dress rehearsal, this is our life.
