To what extent does it make sense to separate out different materials as you demolish the building, like metals? Or do these get separated if/when the debris is shredded at some other location?
@legohead6
@legohead6 10 месяцев назад
Cost of disposal is the primary determining factor. Scrap metal has value and is usually sold to a scrap dealer. Mixed demolition waste is very expensive to dispose of. Paying demolition waste rates to get rid of valuable steel doesn't make sense, so the easy to pick or significant chunks of steel are always plucked out. Most demolition companies don't process their waste any further then they do on site. Typically a third party waste removal company will be hired to remove and dispose of the waste from the site (what they do with after that is a whole other discussion). Some demolition companies will spend more time tearing down the building and more thoroughly sorting the debris as they go(concrete/brick, Wood, Metals, etc). More common on very large building demolitions where the disposal cost to just send it all mixed would be astronomical. Some even go as far as deconstructing certain parts of the buildings and saving things like windows, doors, fixtures, etc to resale or donate. Its ultimately a numbers game for the owner and/or demolition company.

Part of the permit possess should be evaluating a structures usefulness regardless of its area. That could have been used for other stuff like a doctors office or a dentists or even daycare. Maybe the owner needs something different. All this hand wringing about a 30 year old building
@Calamity_Jack
@Calamity_Jack 2 месяца назад
Sometimes the land under a building is (or becomes) way more valuable than the building. Someone buys the property for, say, an office building. Clearing off a 30-year old convenience store is a minor expense. Moving or parting out the building isn't cost-efficient. So... demolition. It's a shame, but it's the reality.

I just happened to come across this video looking for videos of excavators. I knew this store. I recognized the trains going through there and the Yokes signs. I was so mad when it got torn down lol. It was the cleanest, coldest, most organized convenience store I had ever been in and they closed it down.

Wieso werden die Scheiben bei Euch nicht vorher ausgebaut für ins Recycling ? Bei uns wird ein Gebäude erst entkernt (Fenster heraus, Heizkörper heraus, Elektroleitungen heraus) und dann abgerissen.

You've got to get a go pro shot of the bucket coming through the roof on your next demo! It would make a awesome shot!
@DownundaThunda
@DownundaThunda 9 месяцев назад
Problem would be recovery of the camera. Once the roof is damaged, it would be too dangerous to enter the building, so they would have to manually sift through the debris to find it. There's also no garuntee that the camera won't just be destroyed by the excavator as it does it's work.

I'm kind of amazed at how easily this building came apart. The first bites out of the front seemed to have collapsed the whole thing. Almost kind of scary that it came apart that quickly. I was amazed at how much space the "managers office" used. Looks like theyd have used it for more retail space. I collect old phone systems and would have loved ripping out the CCTV stuff, and maybe some of the electrical. Great video. Loved the opening; going in for a final tour!

Well if you could pay someone to strip all materials that could practically be reused you'd spend as much on labor as you would recoup from the effort. Plus this demolition is probably on a time schedule so you don't have a month to fool around doing that. Besides other than the metal you're not going to get much value from used building materials from these cheaply constructed buildings. I would assume these demo projects are more profitable the less time you take for each job and move on to the next one.

This thing is very cool to watch. I'm back in my early grade school age, watching big equipment tearing down greenhouses surrounding our property. This type of machinery has ALWAYS fascinated me- human beings multiplying their physical strength (in essence) by hundreds - or even thousands - of times via technology. And it's just straight, linear motion via hydraulic cylinders & pistons, hooked up to levers -the excavator's arms- that combine to do work that requires enough force to easily knock down walls. Very cool.

It is so weird seeing this with a European lens. Landfills have been outlawed here 25 years ago. So everything needs to be sorted and recycled. You can still get a dumpster/container for "mixed waste", but it is something like 10 times the price, since someone has to manually dig thru it all and sort it later. Here this building would have been stripped of everything inside. Even wires and plumbing removed from the walls. All windows and doors would have to be removed first too. And the demolishing would only be an empty shell of mostly only one material.
