In today's episode, we've at last reached the capital city for our inaugural exploration. We had arrived on the opposite shore of the bay a few days prior, brimming with anticipation as we set out to discover the city via a ferry ride. Our initial encounter with Wellington exceeded our expectations, leaving us convinced that it is a city deserving of more recognition.

Those aren't mountains, they're hills! Is it covered in plants? That's a hill. (Our perception of what counts as a mountain in NZ is a bit different to other places)😅

Mt Albert and Mt Victoria must also be hills aswell
@user-uy6uc5ey5q
@user-uy6uc5ey5q 10 месяцев назад
@@erongmusku9475 The naming of the two heights you mention of course was done by the early settlers in the mid 19th century, where of course people from Britain just getting off a boat preceieved them as high peaks by British standards. Magicweaver of course is talking about modern Kiwi cultural perception of today, not from the 19th century. Wellingtonians for instance refer to the neighbourhood on slopes of Mt Vic as a hill suburb as case in point.
@meganmills6545
@meganmills6545 10 месяцев назад
@@erongmusku9475 Yep - I live in Auckland and although it is peppered with mounds "Mt this" and "Mt that" and "Mt yet another" they're all hills. And the Waitakeres and Hunuas are ranges, but not considered by most of us to be "mountain ranges". For most Kiwis today "mountains" are things like Egmont, Ruapehu, Tongariro. Ngaruhoe and a thumping great streak of them down the South Island we collectively (and showing great imagination) call the "Southern Alps" because it would just take far too long to reel off the names of every peak. Pretty much - if it doesn't get some snow on top, at least in Winter, and take something more in the order of hours rather than minutes to walk up, then it's more of a big hill than a mountain. :-)

I miss this place! I lived in Wellington for 5 years and it's definitely my favourite city in New Zealand. The winds not great but the vibes are :) I used to take the cable car as my daily mode of transport when the legs didn't want to walk down and up the hill - that definitely made for a nice end to the workday. Wellington got the nickname 'Wellywood' after the success of Lord of the Rings - Wellington is where the Weta FX movie studio is based. At The Free Store, they are supplied end of day food items from eateries, bakeries, and cafes in the city. They then provide that for free to anyone in need. It's a great concept. Watching this is making me want to move back!

An unfortunate thing about Wellington is that most Victorian buildings with character in the cbd were demolished as earthquake risks.
@user-uy6uc5ey5q
@user-uy6uc5ey5q 10 месяцев назад
No quite right. Bulk of bigger building you see in old photos are Edwardian or later (1900 is the division year, Victorian is prior to this) as there was bit of building boom in the downtown are after 1900, partly due to the public service getting expanded due NZ govt changing, Wellington being capital. The big changes in building codes for earthquakes came in after the 1931 Napier quake, but due the depression then WW2 there was little redevelopment of the downtown started till late 50s. The big changes of type and more importantly height was from the 60s onwards more driven by new large building construction tech and style (renforced concrete + modernist architecture) plus the building of the urban motorway. Wellington hasn't much large scale specific quake driven redevelopment till the last decade post the changes brought in post the Christchurch and Kaikoura quakes. The latter which actually did reasonable amount of damage to several downtown buildings, including some fairly new buildings.
@paulred158
@paulred158 10 месяцев назад
Incorrect. Lived here my whole life. Most were knocked down in the 80s building boom before we started appreciating heritage. Very few have been lost due to earthquake codes.

The Cable car they traveled on isn't the original 1902 setup, it was modernised a few times since opened with the big change coming the 80s, Prior to that it was more like a old fashioned tram (there's a small museum at the top where you can see the old setup and get history of the system) where you could even sit on the outside facing the outwards kick the side to the tunnels as they passed.

Wellington isn't windy anymore. True ! They're not half what they used to be. On Stewart Dawson's Crn and Willis Street I was on the site where the bank was next to the fruit shop and jewellers. We had to pull the original sea wall out to enable us to do the drains etc. Man that seawall was tough. Anyway down the side of the fruit shop was a skinny pathway that ran toward between the back of the shop and the bank. No one would have ever noticed it. It led to a little door and then another before it opened up into a hidden bathhouse with a pool and bamboo partitioned side room's. There was another door that had been transformed into the artwork and almost invisible that led into the back of the fruit shop. Ha ha we found a secret knock shop, maybe someone out there has heard of it or even had a massage or a pedicure 😂

That would be bacause all those bungalows and Colonial houses were sent as kitsets from The U.S. people could look at a catalouge and choose what they wanted, order it and it would turn up by Ship months later.
@user-uy6uc5ey5q
@user-uy6uc5ey5q 10 месяцев назад
@@michaelgrey7854 You're right they were mass produced kitsets from some US designs (though the term and idea of Bungalows is from British colonial housing in India from the late 18th century) but its myth that they were materially sourced from the USA. NZ has had a large timber industry for its entire history plus was part of the British imperial trade system. So if you restore a house put up in the period you find its mostly made of NZ native timbers (Rimu, Matai etc) or NZ grown plantation pine (which were hybrids of North American pines, but developed here in NZ) which were being developed from the 1920s onwards. They weren't importing large amounts of timber from the US to build houses as it wasn't as good quality or cost effective (the cost shipping round NZ being significantly cheaper at the time than from the other side of the Pacific) , plus generally there were tariffs and import restrictions on US timber. You more likely to find Australian wood in NZ buildings, it being part of the Empire trading block, than American. What's happened were the bungalows were made in NZ under a license from the original US based designers, but almost all supplied by NZ based timber merchants from NZ timber sawmills from NZ grown trees.

Matieu Island, thanks. (Not Soames). You missed the wonderful poetry on the wharves and the Academy of Fine Arts and Paddy The Wanderer (dog statue). Botanic is the correct noun (not botanical adjective). The cable cars pass, not as avoidance but because the one going down pulls the other one up. It is not a mountain! They are hills. "Wellywood" is a reference to Peter Jackson and Jane Campion , world leading film directors. The harbour "spray" is a fountain.

Im a southlander ,,south island is best ,head to the west coast if you like isolation if you wish to stroll a beach & be the only person on it ,,it feels amazing it feels like you own it ,but be warned now take some sand fly repellent & lots of it extra strength heavy duty stuff .The sand flies can easily drive a person insane it happened to me .

Nice Vid, unfortunately Wellington is not always as beautiful as this, I guess as a short term prospective you have shown it in the best light and I'm delighted you got to experience that, however, the true nick name is not "wellywood" that's a recent spin by the locals to divert from the real nick name which is windy Wellington and on three or four days a year it looks as you have shown it but reality is it is very wet & windy most of the time & bitterly cold during the winter months many of us Kiwis say the best way to see Wellington is at 30,000 feet but today you have proven otherwise, good luck on your journey there is a lot to see & most of it is stunning.

Not so much in the North Island. But yep, South Island gets lots of tremors. You get used to them surprisingly quickly. My hubbie grew up in the north of the North and does not remember a single tremor. His mum and sister moved to Christchurch later on, and of course, their experiences are entirely different.

Wellington on a good day is hard to go pass! Great Views! The trouble with the place is its climate. I have lived in Invercargill, Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Wellington, Auckland and then Christchurch and Wellington has the worst climate out of them all! Auckland had the wettest! Christchurch had the hottest summers. Auckland was the warmest over all but it was very wet and humid!

You saying it's busy when Lambton Quay is effectively empty for anyone used to the area. 🤣 Anyways, it's always good to see your home through the eyes of someone new. Otherwise you end up only seeing the bad. Cheers for the good reminder that Wellington has a lot of good stuff going for it. :)
