Great footage, thanks for sharing with us. My family and I did a very similar trip in our big tb48 and camper about a month before you. The colours from Alice down through the Oodnadatta, painted desert and lake Eyre are really what blew us away. Hopefully your crew got to see all the flowers etc that we got to experience. It’s such a stunning part of the world. Like you we had our long range fuel tank crack on the Strezlecki track heading back to Qld. It’s all part of the adventure.

Fantastic trip ... the water tanks were for the steam engines on the Ghan Railway, as the name says , steam engines need water Found this from a History of the Ghan web site, construction started in 1878 and reached Alice in 1929, " during WWII however water supplies were limited and put under great pressure. De-mineralisation towers were built to enable the use of bore water and some of these towers survive to this day." 25:20

The problem with collecting bush firewood is that standing dead trees are a perch for birds and lizards. The problem with dead fall trees is that they provide habitat for foraging ground lizards and marsupials, that need a safe place to rest and sleep. I'm not a Greenie, but I do understand the bush habitats.

I find it hilarious on how many people actually Drive the long roads in two-wheel drive. Not only does the car slide left to right but the rear wheels are getting a flogging premature wearing unnecessary. If we travel in four-wheel drive high range more control and even wearing on your vehicle not to mention less strain on the engine and drive line.
@ianweal3081
@ianweal3081 9 месяцев назад
I learned that in August 1999. Left Finke headed to Kulgera, then onto Curtain Springs via Victory Downs Rd. It had all just been graded, Supa smooth, Supa easy going, touring easily at 100klms per hour towing camper trailer. Unfortunately I crested a rise just shy of Mt Connor, someone had lost their complete exhaust system, I'm going far too quick to swerve (yes, my fault), car picks it up, smashes into camper so I stopped to check for damage. Apart from some dents to camper, bent jockey wheel swivel all was okay, good. Then I checked my tyres, my god, the rears were so hot & so worn down. Combination of speed on hot sand creating extreme heat grinding down our nice newish BFG ATs, well new prior to trip. Lesson learnt, 4x4 engaged always since. Having said that, Oodnadatta track, May 2023, 4x4 whole length, but rear tyres were obviously aired down too low, got hot and wore really weirdly. Hence, I now have TPMS installed to monitor pressure & heat all the time. Yes, engage 4x4 to balance drive load plus have front axle pulling you through corrugations, vehicle maintains a better controlled ride as a result. 100% agree.

@@ianweal3081 when you watch old mate Ruthie with the guy from Cooper tyres Terry and Ruthie is on the beach talking about what is good and what isn't good and what can happen. You will see when he's talking about the tires he shows you one that's been delaminated it had heat bubbles around the outside on the side Wall looking like corrugated iron that was a clear indication that the tyres were on low pressure for too long averaging 60 to 80 km an hour which caused delamination on the inside and that is when the whole tread gets blowing off your tyre. Learnt a lesson on that one too in 2006 don't be in a rush just take it easy. And that was leaving the Birdsville Track heading cross-country into South Australia and Crossing through the Santos gas mines.
@ianweal3081
@ianweal3081 9 месяцев назад
@@bikerssupportingcountrytow6904 yeah, can't say I've seen that but can understand what you have described. Fortunately, my degrigation in both cases wasn't the wall, just tread surface. The investment in TPMS saved us destroying a caravan tyre first time we set off on a trip. Picked up a screw activating warning before damaging tyre & van, hence costly intially but earnt it's keep straight up. So pleased we went there and purchased it.
@einfelder8262
@einfelder8262 9 месяцев назад
I find it hilarious how many people ignore tyre pressure advice when travelling outback roads. Pink Roadhouse has an info sheet (well, they did years ago not sure about now) on what pressures to run. One of our group (80 series) poo-poohed the advice, pointing out that his tyres were fine from Marree to Pink, until 40ks past Ping his left rear blew to shreds. The rest of us were on 24-26psi for the good condition of the track that day, he was on 40. For the rest of the Simpson trip he was in full panic mode because he didn't have a spare, but after dropping pressure and eating some humble pie he made it to Birdsville. The rest of our wheels would not fit the 80 because of our offsets so we couldn't help, even though we all had 2 spares.
@bikerssupportingcountrytow6904
@bikerssupportingcountrytow6904 9 месяцев назад
@@einfelder8262 everybody gets a tyre gauge and let's there tires down to whatever they think is best and going to work which is still actually wrong.. Let's say you're tyres at 40 psi and the length of your Wheel footprint is 200ml long. Now you let your tyre pressure down to say 25 psi and your Wheel track on the front of your car is now 350ml long. Now you grab the two sticks that you use for measuring the front of that tyre and do the remaining three including the caravan exactly the same. It doesn't matter what weight you are carrying in the soft sand because you're load on the tires are now balanced including the caravan. And your car will love you for it because you're not straining anything. And do an average speed of about 60 kph.
