Hyellllo!!!!! Welcome back to the never-ending journey of our house renovations and packing our space with whispers whimsy.
This week: The kitchen! This was a HUGE project and something we've never done before (and hopefully never again lmao), but DANG, it was worth it. I've been compiling footage over a few months so thought I'd sit down and chat over the process of turning our sorta ugly 90's kitchen into a vintage farmhouse one!
Hope you enjoy!!

Exactly. It feels like every time I see a kitchen remodeling of a historic house they just completely modernise the kitchen and don't leave a single trace of the original style of the house. I honestly hate when people buy historic houses and completely modernise every inch of it. Like, if you want a modern house *buy a freaking modern house,* don't ruin a historic one. Even if you want the exterior to look more historic but not the inside, buy a modern house and change the exterior to look older (that's what my family is going to do as soon as we finish the deal to get our new house, because it is very blocky and lacks any identity since it was being used as an elderly care center before)

As someone who was hired at the height of the pandemic by IKEA, I can say that every store in the continental US has had issues getting materials/items shipped to their stores and distro centers. There's a labor and materials shortage that's being exacerbated by the rona and the crisis over in Ukrane (and the occasional boat getting stuck in a canal). It's continuing to be an absolute dumpster fire for management and customers. 🙃

My kitchen is the bumhole of the house. Tiny, full.of sh and kinda clean, but not really. The heart of my house is either the livingroom/craftroom/bedroom (one room) or the bathroom/toilet (one room) because though it has some clogged arteries with laundry and boxes of old make up and washingbags, it is the lightest and nicest room in the house and very, very important.

I just moved into my grandmas old house that hasnt been touched since she died a couple of years ago, I literally moved from the US to England so we could make up lost time with my extended family. Moving into this house has been so overwhelming, its dated, very dirty, and EXTREMELY old fashioned (not in a cute way). Part of my anxiety is needing a space to be just right and if it takes too long I get very depressed and don't want to do it anymore. These renovation videos really help me out of that mindset and give me so many ideas that I become excited again!

I once read a study, many years ago and I can't even remember enough to find it for citation, of how many hours 'someone' (almost always a woman) in a household spent washing dishes every day/week/month/year. They counted from 'lone inhabitant' to farm family of 12 + 5 farmhands. It was staggering. Many, many, many hours spent washing dishes. I kissed my dishwasher right on the front dial!
@druidriley3163
@druidriley3163 Год назад
Amen. I have a nearly 100 year old house. There is no dishwasher. I sorely miss the dishwasher I had in my old apartment. And it's not as easy to just buy one and install in an old house. First - your century old kitchen does not have the plumbing to hook up to a dishwasher. You will need to pay a plumber for the upgrade. In an old house, you may or may not have sufficient electric current to run the appliance. You will need to hire an electrician to hook up the dishwasher and/or rewire your kitchen. So my desire for a relatively inexpensive appliance purchase will remain a pipe dream unless I win the lottery due to all the additional expenses in installing something so simple.
@michaelsnider2484

@@druidriley3163 Get you a portable dishwasher!! They hook right up to the faucet with the little adapter that comes with it: NO PLUMBER NEEDED! I ran one in my 70 year old house from a regular electrical outlet, no problem! They come on wheels so you can wheel it away when not in use, but we removed the cabinet by the sink and it lived there just like a regular dishwasher.. They normally come with a butcher block top so you will not lose any counter top space. I loved mine, had it for 12 years until we moved!! Highly recommend, and, portable dishwashers are not expensive and they are full sized! And...wait for it... I got it at Lowe's. Easy peasy!

Listen, hubby and I will always rememeber "The Kitchen Designer from H*ll" who we worked with to do the renovation on OUR kitchen. WE don't ever want to do that again, EITHER. Also: white floor tiles? Same. SEAL THE GROUT. ASAP. But it will probably still be a pain showing any bit of dirt. Still GORGEOUS job you two. The change is drastic and you did a beautiful new kitchen. Enjoy!!
@becauseimafan
@becauseimafan Год назад
Yes absolutely 100% seal the grout ASAP!!! Sometimes people aren't told about it, it wasn't included in the tiling service, etc. But it's *super* worth it!! Protect that grout, it'll extend the life of your floor, and it'll keep looking pretty and resist cracking, and make the tile easier to clean - always a plus 👍

Yea I was just thinking that she liked the greens on her other murals and especially with the branch herb thing that would be the perfect way to add touches of green to the kitchen (along with possibly trim on the cabinets and drawers?) in a way that she would actually enjoy.

Your house tours always make me emotional. Knowing that there are people like you who commit to vintage aesthetics with such love and care make me so happy I want to cry. I live in France and old houses here don't look like that at all, it is a typically American home (at least in my European mind) and I'm weirdly grateful that some people preserve the memory and the particularities of those places. Plus, knowing full well that your house reflects who you are as a person and putting myself in your shoes, I can only imagine how happy you must be to live there (and that makes me want to shed some more happy tears). I could watch those videos all day... 🫶

Looks incredible!! Definitely recommend using trim and molding to extend your cabinets up to the ceiling, for aesthetic reasons as well as practical (dust, dirt, and general kitchen grime will collect on top of your cabinets and it’s damn near impossible to clean off so taking them all the way up to the ceiling prevents that eventually smelly issue).

To clean all the grimey dust on top of your cabinets use Simple Green and rags. If REALLY bad carefully! use mineral spirits and a stainless steel scrubber. Do this at least yearly.

You can clean the tops quite easily with a mixture of white vinegar, a small squirt of a gentle washing up liquid and water (mix in a clean empty plastic bottle) can optionally add a couple of drops of an essential oil to reduce the vinegar smell. It really cuts through the grease! Also this mixture (without the essential oils) is also great for cleaning glass (windows) as once rinsed off you get a streak free shine. Oh yeah and its good as a side cleaner, round the sink & for in the bathroom too (the vinegar helps dissolve limescale). Saves buying a ton of different products too.
