I feel bad for the people that droped this anime just because they only think about the fights. Vinland Saga since the first episode talked about the concept of being a real warrior and how war only brings despair. Vinland was never about fighting. I can only tell you, the anime is going to get better and better.

Thorfinn has never been more "Son of Thors" than this episode. The way he's fighting to defend the people cares about and how he does it without drawing a weapon is so similar to Thors when their boat was ambushed in the Faroe Islands and the comparison you made with Thors in season 1 episode 1 and the dying slave. He is such a mirror for Thorfinn's character and how great Thorfinn himself can become despite the damage he has caused. *THORFINN, SON OF THORS.*

Soooo sad. I was expecting something like this, but was still surprised how hard it hit. Really beautiful how they interspersed all the flashbacks, visions, present tense to show Gardar's journey. @@makizenin9290 I try to avoid spoilers, but I was actually an English teacher for a long time (and have studied literature/writing/etc), so even if stuff is spoiled, it normally doesn't change things for me because I still can appreciate where things go and watching how things unravel (and a lot of times I can predict stuff just through foreshadowing, so I spoil stuff for myself often just by thinking stuff through). So, yeah, I've had major stuff spoiled about this show, but I don't know all the details and the exact way things will happen, so I'm still anxious to watch how things play out, almost like knowing a car wreck is about to happen but not really being able to stop it, so you just sit and watch with anticipation. Btw, just so you know, Miklagard reffers to Constantinople and literally means "the great city", being the largest city the vikings knew of(and in fact the largest in all of europe for a long time). This implies that Snake was a Varangian guard, a very loyal band of norse mercenaries in the service of the Eastern Roman/Byzantine emperors.

Forgive me if anyone's mentioned this in the comments, but that last scene of Gardar returning "home" to a grown up Hjalti waiting on the swing feels like a symbolism for Hjalti also having died, which is so heart wrenching but beautifully done. Man this episode was a masterpiece. While some people would have felt like it was drawn out, I though it was a great homage and exploration of an almost unknown character done well. Vinland saga knows very well when to pace certain storylines succinctly and when to take its time. And this episode really benefitted from the slow, attention to detail pacing, where it took its time to show Gardar's life and regret without over explaining but just visually telling. And all the people complaining about this season seem to more so enjoy surface level stories with epic battles and powerups, which isn't really bad, enjoy what you like. But just because it isn't to your liking doesn't mean it's a bad anime. Acknowledge that it's not to your taste and move on, please.

@SenseofNoneYT

I was not that invested in Gardar either. But their story itself is what's heartbreaking. How ridiculous slavery was. It's so demeaning and it breaks down people in so many ways. Someone like Gardar who is so strong and proud. Or someone like Arnheid who's feeble (I don't mean it in any offense) and goes with the flow because she was never able to change anything herself. And even though she seemed to have convinced herself that she's fine being a slave in the farm, but breaks down in the heat of the moment and her inner desire is brought about. Like, who the heck is content being a slave? And then on top of it, we have Gardar, a viking who realized too late which was more important to him. One can regret things but things don't turn back for anyone. It's just is. And I think Arnheid was at least happy seeing him changed. His regrets and the fact that he just said he doesn't want Hjalti to become a viking. That's all she wanted from them. Too bad it was too late for them.
@lexibrowning7447
@lexibrowning7447 Год назад
Snake was a Scandinavian-Russian viking who was a guard for the emperor of Constantinople. That's what "a warrior of MIklagard" means. They were by far one of the most powerful viking forces and their time in Constantinople converted a lot of them to Christianity. That's where these Christian themes with Snake come from

@Regenmacher175 Год назад
This one is among my favourite episodes because it is so sad and the inevitability is what gets me. Gardar was dead the moment Snake stabbed him, the rest was Arnheid trying to make his death as peaceful as possible by lying to him about their child whose whereabouts she does not know or even whether he's still alive or not. Judging by what Gardar saw, Hjalti is most likely dead. It's also great because it fits thematically with everything else we've seen this season. Arnheid's, Einar's, Gardar's and ultimately Thorfinn's situation is not one that you can easily fix with a simple solution at this point, which is why slavery is terrible. Next week's episode will hammer home a bunch of points that the audience should keep in mind. Let's just remember: slavery is violence and the author of the manga hates violence.

Just fyi, Snake said he is a warrior of Miklagard. Miklagard is the nordic name for the city Constantinople. Constantinople was at this point in history the capital of the Byzantine empire, which was basically the continuation of the Roman Empire. This leads me to believe the Snake was most likely a member of the Varangian Guard, an elite unit of the Byzantine Empire that was primarily composed of warriors recruited from the far away north of Europe. The Varangian Guard served as the personal guards of the Byzantine Emperors. That also would explain his exotic sword.

Gardar isn't a monster, but he is just a broken man who's been beaten down mentally and physically by his slave owners. They don't see slaves as human, thus they villianize and dehumanize them .Because unfortunately this isn't much different than now, yes we don't have slaves anymore , but we still struggle with others discriminating against others for simply existing. Treating said people less than human. Because they see you as a monster, not as a person. It's fucked up. It's sad that we haven't gotten any better. Instead of trying to understand one another, we end up scapegoating another all because they are different. It's happening now. Scary times we live in. Some people would go as far as to literally calling for the genocide of marginalized community's and marginalized people , all because they don't feel comfortable with different walks of life being alive or being in society. These are real issues. It's not a agenda , but is just fighting to protect everyone's basic human rights. Everyone deserves to be happy and alive , no matter where you come from or who you are. It gives us no right to strip a human from not only their rights, but their dignity. My case and point.

The idea that it's been 'done before' can apply to literally any story at this point. I don't recall any story featuring Vikings that went this hard in exploring the idea of non-violence because usually stories about Vikings tend to just go with the idea of violence being a normal part of their daily lives. This one does too but it also says that it's terrible what they are doing to each other and it holds its characters accountable for their actions. That is unusual for a story about Norsemen because one generally wants the audience to be on the side of the characters the story focuses on. Vinland Saga actively says that the main character was a terrible person during a period of his life that the audience usually associates with "cool" Viking action spectacle.

I'll also note that the inherent paradox is that any of those men Gardar killed could have had just as equivalent a life and dream as Gardar (hell, the guy who was nice to Arnheid before getting his throat bit off). Snake knows a few things from the Bible and also given where he served..yet he still wanted justice, an eye for an eye, a life for a life. I'd imagine a lot of Christians of the time and nowadays would side with him too.

Those men EXIST to keep slaves bound to be slaves. They get no sympathy. If you’re in the way of my freedom, is it meant for me to accept my fate and just be a slave?

The defense of Gardar's life is an unfortunately sad situation. Is Gardar worth more than Snake's men? Well, one criminal can't be worth more than five law abiding (not innocent) men. Is Gardar's reason for all the lives he's taken, from both Ketil's farm and his original farm, justifiable? By today's standards, maybe but I doubt he'd be acquitted in a court of law. By the standards back then? He's a legally obtained slave who escaped and went on a murderous rampage. There's really no way to wiggle him out of being killed after that.

I see what you mean, but i think they did it because there wasnt really a lot of screen time of him, so people were not really attached. So this was necessary in order for it to hit as hard as it did :(

@@NJAXDTOWN Yeah for sure, i'm talking about him laying down on her and saying "I'm just tired" and closing his eyes, right there I though it was his last words, and then... he comes back, and I was like "well now he is dead", nope he talks again, and then the same thing happens again. But yeah I understand the point of having the flash backs to build a better connection with this character , well maybe will grow on me.

It was kind of the “Return of the King” of anime deaths lol But having lost someone important in the last year, a lot of this was really impactful for us
@KingOfBboys
@KingOfBboys Год назад
@@TJgamesfull7 I think you're thinking about it strictly on a surface level. The purpose of the show is to communicate how important peace over violence is, and nothing exemplifies it more than a father realizing the quiet life he could've had with his family if war hadn't disrupted it. Gardar's last moments are meant to show us how everyone should try to live their final moments - not in pain, agony, or regret, but peacefully reminiscing all of what made their lives worth living. This echoes to what Thors did for the first slave in the first episode of the series or when Askeladd told Atli to live a quiet life and die of old age in episode 20. I see a lot of complainers in the comments, and I get you want the plot to simply move forward, but what the show wants is to deliver a message. It has done that beautifully so far, in my opinion.

Honestly its probably a result of the fact this was written much more recently than the rest of the story. Since this is anime exclusive, they probably couldnt find a good point to pepper in some of this backstory before hand, so they had no choice but to dump it during his death. Its a bit jarring as it is by far the longest death in vinland, but also many wounds are slow deaths so it kind of works in that regard.

Second half of the episode was such a huge waste of time, anime original and did not add anything we already knew.

As a reader of the manga I appreciate the anime adding layers and nuance to the characters. But I guess you're ok with a more simplistic story that has less to say about all of the themes of Vinland Saga so long as you get your action fanservice, huh?
