Hello there! My name is Hannah and I am a 23 year old studying medicine in Canada. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours in 2020 (majoring in Neuroscience) and started medical school right after that!
I've been documenting my journey since I was in university, studying for the MCAT, interviewing for schools, and now my life in med! I love working hard and celebrating that, I hope you enjoy my channel and will subscribe for motivating study vlogs and productivity posts :)

It’s honestly so disheartening that pre-med culture is associated with competition, people being cutthroat, etc. A huge aspect of medicine that I love is collaboration, but it’s kinda ironic that the whole pre-med experience doesn’t seem to cater towards that. I’m grateful to know other pre-meds who inspire me to work harder, but it definitely sucks experiencing that uneasiness. I totally feel you about others asking exactly what activities you’re involved in, grades, and more, but I’ve also experienced imposter syndrome and moments where I always compared myself to others. One thing this whole process taught me is that it’s so important to continue to stay true to yourself and your passions. I keep telling myself that more often (especially since I will be applying this cycle 😅). Loved the video! ❤️

Thanks for your insight!! I can relate to a lot of what you mentioned 😊 it’s so much more enjoyable when you find a group of students who truly support you and can help you grow

In my premed experience, I was surrounded by a lot of competitive students (that did not pass my vibe check jsjsjs) so I kept my head down and focused on my work and never really developed friendships in my own faculty. I feel it would have been nice to find that group of premeds that could be a support system soo I hope that now when I start med school I find that group of people. It’s sad to see this kind of competitive culture in a field that is about team work and helping others (amongst other things). Hopefully we upcoming students and those in process can make a change in the toxic premed, medical school, etc culture.

I totally agree with you Camilla! People can be really judgemental and toxic when they know that you're wanting the same thing, I found it really helpful to find friends outside of the field or who had different interests! It also gets way better in med school! Everyone is super empowering of each other's achievements, and genuinely wanting to improve the work culture both in the hospital and within academic centers :)

Hello! I do enjoy your videos first and foremost! But I do have questions since I found some info a bit contradicting of the subject matter. No hate what's so ever, but I am genuinely curious. You speak of the positives of empowering one another through the journey(I understand you found people outside of med to connect with), but when you mentioned your strategy to keep your head down, not speak of your extracurriculars, or the feeling of them trying to copy your work, does that not add to the negatives of the med culture instead of empowerment of one another? As in you're not empowering them back if that makes sense. It is radiating as passive competitiveness(something you mentioned you're not fond of because of the toxicity attached to it) since you, in a way, chose to not engage with others to create a connection as future doctors. Others may perceive it as stand-offish or disheartening which leans more towards the negatives, now they may feel uneasy hence this culture cycle? I personally believe this creates a domino effect that cycles back for many students that may feel the same way about you or each other. I have found that throughout my schooling experience and my peers, people interested in a similar field will actually give each other tips, resources, and study habits to empower each other! Especially in my premed club! I know the situation depends, but at least it's a step in the right direction to eradicate the toxicity :). Keep working hard! :D

As someone who was a premed and now going to med school, I think it really depends on the culture of where you're going to school. Sometimes a program is so saturated with competitive, standoffish, invulnerable pre-med students and other programs have more openness like in your case. It isn't the responsibility of one person to change that perspective for an entire program. And I don't really think this is a case of domino effect because that implies one person is the cause of the entire row of dominos falling. One person keeping to themselves isn't the reason why an entire premed program is toxic. Sure, keeping to yourself doesn't necessarily help others open up, but we don't know the severity of her trauma from opening up (which may have been very traumatizing, ie having people plagiarize her work). To put that responsibility onto one person is unfair and kinda harsh, and it also invalidates her feelings as someone who has been through a draining experience. I didn't find it disheartening or standoffish, I actually empathize and relate to her because overwhelming competition is the reality for most premed programs, especially in Canada. I sincerely think that narrowing the blame onto one person is not the solution.

Hey Hannah, if you didn’t share any of your plans to your peers how did you know what career you wanted to choose? Because for me I always find myself lost if I don’t talk to someone who has the knowledge of my possible career path(s). Did you just do your own research or did you engage in networking eventually? (Especially in terms of the process of how to apply here and there; what requirements you need to do; how to make your application competitive etc etc) I look up to you so much! Many thanks! ❤️

Thank you so much for your video. I totally agree that there needs to be less toxicity in the field of medicine. However, I honestly think your videos actually add to this toxicity that you speak of. I don't think you are aware that you DO tell the world about the activities that you do as a premed. You say that your strategy is to put your head down and just do you. But, your videos say otherwise. The way you talk about your research, your extracurriculars...you don't come off as real and passionate. You sound pretentious. You are one of the people you talk about that make people feel insecure. It is so easy for yourself to talk about all these amazing things that happen to you as a pre-med/med student because you yourself are one of those people that have everything going well for you. Your reaction video to your MCAT score...do you think you would put up a video of your reaction if you scored poorly? People don't always post about the negatives in their life. But, for you, your videos are all about the good. You did well in school, you participate in all these activities. You don't realize it but your videos also contribute to the toxicity and feelings of insecurity pre-med/med students have.

Hey, I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into this comment! And I can appreciate how you would have that viewpoint. But I can also respond directly to some of the points you bring up. In my MCAT reaction video, I talked about the point of filming the reaction specifically and my fears about making it public. If there wasn't a genuine desire to share my journey, I wouldn't have filmed all the videos leading up to it and sharing my poor practice test scores along the way. I don't have to imagine myself as being honest about this because I HAVE been honest. You are also incorrect about all my videos being "about the good". I literally have a video on my channel talking about how I felt getting rejection videos from medical schools lol I also know that with every video I film where I talk specifically about my experiences, I make sure to broadcast very explicitly that they are MY OWN experiences and that there are many different pathways to medicine. I went on youtube to film my journey because I had no one to talk to about this in real life. Many people in medicine don't, and I want this community to be a safe space where we CAN celebrate each other's achievements without comparison. I think it's ironic that you perceive pretension in this goal, I am surprised that you think it's pretension when half my videos are my looking like crap but working my butt off for my degree. I wonder why you would feel that way. If you feel attacked by my achievements or the content I post, I would advise you to please stop watching. Thank you.
