Who are we? 💁🏼‍♀️
We're Tom and Iz, who live and travel in our van La Bamba. We love nature and are currently traveling in Norway!!
You might find Tom in the forest IDing a mushroom, fixing something or starting an ambitious project with his laid-back relaxed approach whereas you could find Isabel cooking up a storm, sunning herself on a beach and being a busy, energetic bee with her endless enthusiasm and positivity! We are total opposites but it works!
How did we end up here?! 😁 ⏮
We met 10 years ago when we were both finishing our A-levels and had a whirlwind summer romance, hitch-hiking around France together before before going our separate ways to travel and to university. We've both always prioritised travel and adventure and have worked hard over the years in hospitality jobs to enable us to keep exploring.
Tom hitch-hiked across Europe and road tripped around Australia whilst Iz studied Environmental Science at York. Iz backpacked around South America with her sister whilst Tom studied Forestry at Aberdeen University. Little did we know we just weren't going to get each other out of our minds! Fast forward 4 years later, we found ourselves in campsite warden jobs, living in a bell tent in a wild flower meadow together! Maybe without realising this was the start of our van life journey!
Next, we both trained to be science teachers and during training, we bought a van, ripped out it's interior and converted it to live in it. Iz managed to get a remote work-from-home job that she could do from the van and Tom was passionate about starting up a RU-vid channel.
Since then we haven't looked back and when the pandemic allowed us to, we travelled to Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and around Cornwall. We are now on a big European road trip! We are giving it our best shot to do RU-vid full time. We have a dream of one day owning a little plot of land and building ourselves a cabin in the woods. If you're new around here you can check out our previous videos; we've been uploading weekly videos for the last 9 months and are currently releasing DAILY VIDEOS.
Our message on our channel is to inspire others to do what they love as life is too short! We love living simply, freely with less stuff but more time!
Thank you so much for watching! If you enjoyed this video please consider LIKING this video and SUBSCRIBING to our channel! It would help us grow our channel 🌻

How amazing!! What a stunningly beautiful environment. I'm guessing that you would see whales and dolphins at different times of the year. And then there are the northern lights in winter!! Still, you have the midnight sunshine which is almost inconceivable here in Old Blighty. Can't wait for part 2!!!

I love how much knowledge you have got around the places you visit. I am Norwegian myself and I am sure that not all Norwegians know all the facts you are telling us through this video series. I live in a city a bit further north called Tromsø, and I have gone with my bicycle to Å several times (around 530-550km each way), and I love the Lofoten area. Its so beautiful! Your vlogs is like a huge Professional advertisement for Northern part of Norway :)

Tom’s ‘awesome’ or the vowel sound in ‘course’ (when you don't pronounce the r) is what å sounds like. BTW, it's an a with a circle, which officially eneterd the Norwegian alphabet in 1917. (The letter - not the sound - stems from German, and then from Swedish into Norwegian - and lastly Danish in 1948). For a long time the sound was written as aa - until about 1875 when the system was changed - which could cause confusion because a long a was also written aa. ‘The brook’ could have been written aaa; åa in modern spelling. As a word, å is quite versatile: it is the infinitive marker ( the ‘to’ in ‘to be’), a small river or brook, as well as ‘oh?’, ‘oh!’, ‘ooooh!’, ‘aaawww’. And, when spoken when inhaling, express mild shock or surrprise.😯

About "Å": We have an old norwegian proverb that says "mange bekker små gjør ei stor å", meaning "many small creeks makes a great river". "Å" basically means "river", just like the more commonly used norwegian word "Elv". I really enjoy your videos, so keep them coming! Fortsatt god tur, as we norwegians say! Been living all my life up in Lofoten/Vesterålen, but moved south to Stavanger about 4 years ago. I still come back up north every summer. I don't miss the winters with no sun at all from November to early February. ;) It doesn't even come above the horizon most of that time, but when it does the mountains are so tall that it blocks the direct sun for another month or so.
@hawaii2k
@hawaii2k 2 года назад
The sea can be pretty rough where that ferry goes, so you hit the jackpot regarding the weather. Being born and raised in Vesterålen, right north of Lofoten, I hope you take some time there as well. Most people know about Lofoten, and not Vesterålen. I think that's because they've been a lot better at marketing towards tourists than what we have in Vesterålen. But it's just as nice. :)

Fisher village Å, well, you both got it perfect. Usually I'd tell English speakers something like English Aw (aw-some ofcourse individual variations, dialect and accent maybe). 'Rorbu' where fishermen hired room, in English 'row cabin' just to put it into a context. Before the industrial revolution fishermen either sailed or did row their boats. Also not far from Svolvær is a place called Trollfjord in which were a famous sea battle around 1900 between traditional fishermen and bigger boats with steam engines. The sea battle is called The Battle of Trollfjord.

3:21: Not bad! Very polite and nobody would ever have any problems understanding. Yes, Å in Norwegian is an old word for river. We have an expression «many brooks small makes a big å», where the letter Å is pronounced exactly like the "a" in "small". We also have the word "Ø", which means an island. I don't know how to explain that sound, except to say that if I wanted to write the sound "hors d'oeuvre" in Norwegian, I would write "årdøvr". Norwegian is dead simple if you're willing to go a bit Benjamin Franklin with your English. :)

Just a couple of notes: The excellent UK youtube channel Name Explain did an episode on the name of Å including its use in the town you visited: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_R2o3f08k04.html You didn't mention it in the video but the description says you ended up at Moskenesøya. Although the more famous tidal current is Saltstraumen which you already visited, there is also Moskstraumen, which actually forms in the open sea close to the southern tip of the island you're on. This was a great danger to boats and ships before they became powerful enough to drive out of the whirlpool. Therefore its reputation spread through much of Europe, and possibly as early as antiquity -- the Norwegian wikipedia page mentions that a Greek fella is possibly referring to it as early as 300 BC. There are more definitive references to the phenomenon going back to the 1300's when the Norse saga collection _The Prose Edda_ were written. Jules Verne, Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville all wrote about it in literature. Poe described it as the "Maelstrom", and checking this word in the Merriam-Webster dictionary I see a "did you know" section that explains that Moskstraumen is the _original_ Maelstrom, and that this word soon got applied more broadly to powerful whirlpools in general. I suppose it is weird that the much more powerful Saltstraumen, which is not far away, was less famous. But my own guess is that Saltstraumen was only a danger to locals, while Moskstraumen could be a danger to anyone travelling in the area, and could suprise seafarers as the ocean will generally not show much sign that it is moving fast -- until you're stuck in the whirlpool.
