Theater Major here: Historically, horrible events happen during productions of Macbeth, which is why the show is cursed and actors don't say his name! (Also it was my dream role and I got to do it last spring so YEET)

Back in Shakespeare’s time period, Macbeth was constantly put on at theaters that were about to close (due to it being cheap to put on) Because of this, it is often associated with this and makes people think it’s bad luck. In the theatre, if one says this word (without it being in the show) it is said the whole play/show is doomed. The term “the Scottish play” comes from both the plays setting and its nickname (which Shakespeare have to it)

Dan's nephew conveyed my feelings on having bbs that I've been trying to explain to my mam better than I ever have or could have.

Take it from a theatre major, the Scottish play (Macbeth) is hella cursed. On its opening night the actor playing Lady Macbeth dies and Shakespeare himself played the role. The king was so scared by the play that it was banned for 100 YEARS. So many people have gotten hurt and even died during productions. I’ve experienced the curse. Some kids said the name on stage and that year our entire musical cast got the stomach flu, one if the leads broke her ankle, two ensemble members broke their arms, a deck crew member broke her foot when changing scenes. Its a real curse; DO NOT SPEAK THE SCOTTISH PLAY!

Hoo boy do I love explaining the Scottish Play! So some bad accidents happened during some rehearsals (if I'm remembering correctly, it's been a hot sec since I've studied it), which led some people to think it was cursed bc there are witches in it, who chant spells, and people basically thought those spells were real curses, and some people thought another character was literally an incarnation of the devil. Fun fact: If you say "Macbeth" in a theatre you must go outside, shout the foulest word you know, spin around three times, spit, and wait for permission to re-enter the theatre in order to break the curse.

The reason why you never say MacBeth in a theatre is because in Shakespearean times it is said that the fake knife used in the play was switched out with a real knife and instead of faking the death it actually happened, and so it is known in modern theatre as “that Scottish play” and if you say the name inside of a theatre your show is cursed, but to break it you go outside, spin 3 times, spit, and ask to be let back in, and no, I did not make that up, I make a living acting. It is in fact, that ridiculously absurd.

So the thing about Macbeth is that if you are currently performing the play/reading the play/etc. and you say the name of the play, you are to be cursed with bad luck until you remove the curse or finish the play. I don't remember how to remove the curse, but I think it was that you need to hop on your right foot counter-clockwise ten times saying "Macbeth" and then after the tenth rotation you stop and say the dirtiest word you know. [IDK if the curse removal thing is totally accurate but that's how my 10th grade British literature teacher told us]

The reason why you never say Macbeth in a theater is that something will go wrong. Everyone has stories, but my personal Macbeth incident was when we were performing Addam's Family. I don't know why, but the stage crew said Macbeth a lot that year. Suddenly, nothing worked. Set pieces almost fell on people, props went missing, costumes were torn. Everything went wrong. Perhaps the most alarming thing that happened was that the Exit signs (the ones with the glowing letters) somehow got programmed into the light cues. (If you don't know, all the lights in a show are programmed during rehearsals, so that the people in the booth don't have to frantically change the light colors and positions all the time.) The exit lights ended up just turning off in the middle of a dress rehearsal, and the fire department came. After that, we all did the anti-jyuu jyuu ritual (not sure if I'm spelling that right) to get rid of angry spirits. My director stood on the stage to make sure we weren't doing it wrong. And this is the really spooky part. The auditorium doors were open, so we could see into the hallway. And my director swears up and down to this day that she saw a silhouette of a man appear in the doorway and leave the auditorium. Anyway, that's why you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT say Macbeth in a theater.
