This midweek episode comes a little surprise! We Exchange our Defender Land Rover with the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series (troopy) of our friends Cody and Olivia @gdayjambo. It all started with an idea of doing an exchange for 24 hours. It felt perfect as we all share the same passion for those two vehicles, and hesitated with the vehicle of the other.
We enjoyed how comic it was also because of the regular comments posted on the channel telling us to get a Toyota. So buckle up we are riding a Toyota for the next day.
Our friends Cody and Olivia are going to make a video of this experience from their point of view driving our Land Rover Defender Albatross. Whenever it is available we are going to link it in the description and video.

The morning kiss by Roan😂😂😂… Honestly, in terms of driving comfort the two are so different. 4 leave springs vs 4 coil springs! A bit like Grandson playing with Grandpa. But the engine in the Troopy is epic!

I'm happy you drive as a group in Defender(s) and Troopy showing the overlanding community that this division is unnecessary. We own Toyota LC78, but in Botswana, we rented the Defender and loved it. Both cars give me such joy when I drive that just driving them is the best way to keep your spirit up. Good luck with your travel and happy to find your YT channel through Eva's.

After having rebuilt the engine in our Toyota and a friends 200Tdi Defender, I can say that I love both vehicles. Each one has its pros and cons, but they both deliver on the fundamental driving experience and that is what matters.

A great, unbiased view of the different vehicles, I can't wait for the review of the Defender! There are pro's and con's to every setup, so it's good to see what you like about theirs and what you don't. I think the Troopy could do with some more refinements but it does what it does well. 😀

Awesome that you got to drive the troopy . I have had both rigs before . Over all I liked the Land Rover better , but both make perfect over landing rigs . I drove both on two year long trips and both are the same as to reliable. As with any rigs regularly keeping them serviced is the key . It seams to me that day to day drivers of troopys seem to be better at keeping up with reg matance . We’re landy owner’s seem to drive them tell thy break . But both are awesome overlanding rigs that will bring you many happy times traveling in them . Great video again you two . Was fun to see you do this video . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :):) .:)🐕. 🌎🍻👍🏼

The steering should not be wobbly. There are a number of possible causes. My past vehicles have had each of them. Ball Joints, idler arms, steering column and gears. Basically the entire system should be evaluated.

Troopy has the leaf front suspension. They changed to springs in the early 90's. This would account for the unrefined ride. A 2013 Troopy would do a lot better and be a fair comparisson

How often does your car break? And their Toyota? Is it about the same? It'd be interesting to compare the cost of driving with them both for 1 year. But it'd be more fair if they were both the same age. Fun video!

Loved loved loved this video! All the scenes with Ron were truly adorables 😍 This video is a bit different as well as educative: so interesting and great idea to have a benchmark on both vehicules lifestyle ! Although I would have loved to have a quick debrief by C&O on Albo towards the end. Just to complete the experience. As well you guys didn’t mention Jambo right wheel driving (or I must have missed it?): why is it so for a véhicule coming from the US? Or did they import it directly from Japan? Since I saw them popping up in your adventures it still doesn’t make sense for me! A mystery to remain solved… Thanks again for this video 😘

Hi Ella! You re right we forgot to mention the right hand driving. Maybe because for us it is not a problem to drive right hand it did not occur to us to mention it. But you are right it is a big one. The troopy is from Australia and was imported to the USA !

I’ve owned Toyota 4wd AFTER owning a very very early Range Rover. I had a lwb Series 2a LR as well but now drive my 2012 Discovery. I find it has everything you need in a 4wd. Originally it had air suspension but a previous owner swapped it for coils. The cost could have maintained the air suspension for years! It has disc brakes all round, traction control, descent control, cold air con, great sound system, electric windows, good seats (7) if you leave them in, and all this is standard not after market. I chose the V8 engine and recently fitted extractors which immediately increased power and gave marginally better fuel savings. One thing with LR is the world wide camaraderie you find and willing assistance by owners. I suppose Toyota is similar. I guess the friendly rivalry pales into insignificance because anyone who travels has a common bond no matter what they’re driving. Cheers 👍🏻🙏🦘

I too had a 2012 LR4. Loved it but after 114K miles, it needed a $8K timing chain job, new water pump, radiator, and other expensive items even though it was meticulously maintained. Switched to Toyota and hope to never look back.

I have been thinking deeply about the concept of travel, why do it, and what are it's purposes? There is travel for recreation, ie. to see things. That is what you are doing. You are on an expedition and obvioulsly want to see a lot. 2. There is travel to get to work , get somewhere, do a task, to or visit someone. We have all done that. And lastly, there is travel to do research on a subject one feels a connection to. There have been researchers, like Jacque Cousteau, who traveled the world to research various aspects of life in the onceans, hopefully to preserve it. I call it focused travel. It seems to me, you can aimlessly travel the surface of the earth, which is fun to a point. I get it. That is all I ever did. However, if you want to use your life and resources in the most effective way, you focus your travel on something that may make a contribution in some way. There are endless things to research. I am a photographer. If I were to do it in a focused way, I might want to photograph ancient stone structures. They cover the planet, so I would be going to many of the same places, but using my time and resources in a way that would produce something, hopefully of benefit to others.

Two days ago, I had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night and did not want to drive. We called the Emergency Medical Technicians and they drove me, on a gurney, and my wife up fron on a seat, to the hospital. I am now out and feel much better. During the time I spent in the medical van, it made me think a used medical van would be a great vehicle for overlanding. They are high inside and have a lot room, and also come with many cabinest with doors you can see trough. I would probably have the suspension rebuilt and the engine gone over and rebuilt as needed. They are built on truck frames, so should be durable.

Hi, After years of experience on several models of WC (dry toilet, chemical) in Defender, I recommend the bivvy loo. This is much better, smaller, more stowable, more hygienic, more practical, more transportable, usable in the defender or outside in your Quechua shower tent and you don't carry your commission 🤢 on the road. (I bought the model myself and am not sponsored😁) you can find it in good RV & camping stores and Internet. Have nice and safe trip. See you soon with your next WC !🤣

Great video but not a fair comparison. One vehicle is 28 years older than the other. Do you see the Defender being a viable vehicle (trust it) in 28 years? It would be interesting to compare similar year models but it would be hard to find friends with a 2013 Land Cruiser set up for overlanding...

Overlander 4x4's are such personal vehicles, you choose the vehicle from the masses available for purchase and you buy the one that fits your needs and requirements best. As a Toyota man l would choose either of these very 'agricultural' vehicles after researching accessibility of parts and mechanics. l do believe the Troopy would have the edge over the LR and this would reflect in the purchase price. l also believe there would be better 'bangs for your bucks' with the LR due to lower demand for these vehicles. As far as the issues with this Troopy go, the tacho will be driven from a counter in the alternator and this can be wired up if needed, but as you get to know your vehicle, it becomes unnecessary so would be money wasted. The loose steering is common to the old steering box-system, these do wear and get loose with age, but should be ok if you can be bothered with the slop. A good mechanic can tighten up the box if desired. Loose wheel nuts affect my Surf as well and l can't explain why they seem to come loose. My Surf also has the old 139.7x6 PCD bolt pattern.

Nothing wrong with a Defender - other than the U.S. army Jeep, Land Rovers were the original overland vehicle, having been introduced in 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Very few other vehicles ever produced can claim the sort of international fame and recognition that surrounded the Land Rover during its expedition heydays of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Albo is following this long line of expedition heritage. And yes, I too have driven many types of 4x4s over the years and many have been very good. However, the expedition heritage of the LR Series/Defender is something that can never be taken away from the marque. LRs may need a lot more day to day care and maintenance than other cars but the payoff is they easily will last 30+ years with many much older than that. Long live Albo!! P.S. I thought it was funny that Albo thought he was being stolen instead of borrowed and began honking his head off!!! 😂😅
