Everyone on this show acts in ways based on their own experience. Maria was skeptical of Joel because of Tommy's stories about what they did, killing innocent people. She used to be a DA and "put bad guys in prison." She didn't have the same history as Joel and Tommy, probably because she found a community before having to do shady shit. So, her POV and skepticism is colored both by her past and by only knowing the snippets of what Tommy has told her about Joel, which is traumatizing. She also doesn't know what Joel has been through since and how he's changed and/or feels about that time. If you heard about some evil shit someone had done, you might automatically assume that person is evil. I think Ellie helped her to see a bit of the bigger picture...maybe.
