this is the masterpiece of the new decade, no overhyping on this one, this is gonna be what people will be comparing shows of this genre for a long time.

The names of characters and places are mostly German words and in a wide sense they fit to them. Frieren - to be cold or freezing Himmel - heaven or sky (a lot of times the anime shows the sky when Frieren talks about Himmel) Heiter - cheerful Eisen - iron Fern - distant Flamme - flame You can look up almost every name in this show and translate it to English.

Hearing Little Fern's voice giving me so much flashback, it's not even a year have passed yet.

The elves in this seem to be like the ones in Lord of the Rings, they can potentially be killed but they never get old. Also all the time stamps in this show are counting from Himmel's death.

02:17 I'm re-watching this show and am once again amazed by the details. In this scene, when Himmel is talking, Himmel's eyes are on Frieren and we can see her on screen. But when Frieren is talking, her eyes are not on Himmel, and we don't see him on screen. I won't go into detail because it would be a spoiler, but it's a nice detail.

Frieren is 100% LOTR style high fantasy. Frieren and the other elves you meet also are the most in line with Tolkien's elves of any recent fiction, arguably even more like his elves than the ones in the recent Amazon series.

I LOVE Frieren reactions! It's in my top 5 animes out of 200+ I've watched, and it's become my #1 anime recommendation for new anime watchers (not that you guys are new) because it does an extremely good job at introducing all the good tropes a good fantasy/slice of life anime should have without any of the stupid fan service. Its character and world building are one of the best I've seen. It's animation and facial expressions are top tier as well IMO.

Elves live thousands of years, dwarves, a few hundred, humans, same as us.

My theory is that the shadow dragon horn was slowly sapping away Himmel’s lifespan which is why he aged faster

You thought there was a time skip for the 50-years gap between the era-meteor-shower, but you actually just experience what a mere 50 years in Frieren's perspective. This anime does quite a few story-telling visually instead of verbally. Next time you thought there is a time skip again, no, it's once again that's how Frieren felt.

Ep 1 is technically the first 4 eps

Just so you know, mimics have been around WAY longer than Dark Souls. They first appeared in Dungeons & Dragons back in 1977. Also, there's no overhyping Frieren. It's just that good. In most modern fantasy (most of which is inspired by Lord of the Rings), elves usually are extremely long-lived, as in thousands of years (they were immortal in LOTR unless killed in battle). Also, dwarves usually are longer-lived than humans, typically depicted as living 200-300 years.

Frieren is the only anime for a long time where it got me excited every week again waiting for the next episode. Before, I'm pretty much tired of watching anime for many years because i've watched so many now. I've been watching continously for almost 20 years and probably have watched 1000+ animes. Even back when i was 4 years in watching anime, I'm already tired of watching lol. The only reason why i didn't stop watching is because anime for me is the greatest entertainment for killing time. Also the reason why i got tired of watching anime is because almost all of them are following the same trope over and over again. That's why even popular animes now like MHA, JJK, solo leveling, demon slayer, etc. I can't even finish those because of how many generic tropes they have. I mean it make sense, why change it if it still works right? I can't even finish most of anime now i just ended up just watching 2 or 3 episodes and get bored and i immediately stop watching. That's why I'm happy that watching frieren somehow made me feel the joy of watching anime again.

while typing this I'm at 6 min and i think it's not a good start that they don't know of an elf's lifespan since they might think that it's something coz by a spell or a curse but the truth is it's just simply a factual characteristic of an elf

Sorry, I think the "she's not human is she" in the beginning is really funny when you see she has huge elf ears. Like yeah haha. Especially you mentioning LOTR, which famously created the Elves we know in Fantasy. Who also age for thousands of years. Like Galadriel from LOTR is 8,000 years old. (hope this isn't coming off as rude, mostly joking, great reaction)

I think the part of the episode that hits hardest for me is when Frieren starts remembering her time adventuring with Himmel, and the dirt is being shoveled on his coffin. Each dirt pile hitting the lid is like, "Too late", "Too late", "Too late".

It’s not that Himmel aged badly, but that Heiter aged well. It was established at the beginning of the episode that Heiter looked the same as he ever did, even after they traveled together for 10 years. And then, fifty years later, he’s still the one who looks the same as he ever did. He looked older than he was when he was young, so now that he’s old, it makes sense he would look younger. Because he always looks the same. I don’t know why nobody catches this.

All the hype but no one dares spoil the show means there is so much love and respect for it.

For those curious, someone worked out what they could from the media available, and Frieren is about 1500 years old- and there's no lore about how long elves live, but she still is quite young going off her appearance vs those of the few other elves she comes across.

My grandfather passed away this past week, and something about the way frieren is written just really resonates with me. I have a feeling the author may have had a similar experience with losing someone close to them. My grandfather really was my hero. He even went on a journey across the world as a teenager. Hundreds of people came to his wake. I never really appreciated the significance of the traditions he carried on to our family until he died. This concept of upholding tradition is even touched on in the anime.

You have a really good community if they recommend you an amazing show and you still manage to not get spoiled. Spoiler alert: you're going to love this show!

To give a good indication on how long Frieren will live- The current setting looks to be say, the middle ages, there abouts, sometimes before the industrial revolution in our world. There's flashbacks to when Frieren was with her Master Flamme, and the architecture and clothing of the people makes it look like ANCIENT GREECE OR ROME, and Frieren only looks SLIGHTLY younger than she does now.

This show is a jack of all trades and master of all ❤️ welcome to one of the best anime in our lifetime!

I’m sorry but Prez saying “She’s not human is she?” got me looking like 😂. Like, what gave it away, her massive ears? All kidding aside, one of the best reasons why this show is so good is that the reason it’s overblown with hype is BECAUSE it’s so satisfying to watch. Please do enjoy the beautiful animation, story, and music of Frieren.

"I'm getting major Lord of the Rings vibes." To me, it feels like a mixture of the beginning of Fellowship and the end of Return of the King. Also, I love the way they handle time and adventuring in this show. It took them 10 years to cross the continent and kill the Devil King. A lot of that was because of travel. Sure, they had side quests, set-up quests, etc.; but the continent is massive. Hell, to see the "good spot" for the Era Meteor Shower, they had to travel for a full week. Even though we're rushed through certain parts in order to follow how quickly and miniscule it is for Frieren, we also have characters who deem it normal and worthwhile to travel for a week. When was the last time you casually committed a week of your life to go somewhere? On top of that, because we "zoom out on the timeline" to follow Frieren's journey, it makes the simple moments feel 1,000x more meaningful. This show immediately gives you "parting ways with high school friends when leaving for college" vibes and then gut punches you when time catches up. Gah, I'm just word-vomiting over here. I love the writing so much.

You two NEED to continue this show. You might think you know what kind of show it is but trust me ….you don’t lol. This is an absolute work of art, the pacing, the character writing, the animation and yes….THE BATTLES are all top of the class. Also just a pro tip, do not under any circumstances speak ill of Himmel in Frierens presence. There are consequences for those actions Edit: also you should notice that once Himmel passes away each episode/new area/time starts with showing how long it’s been since his death. That’s Frierens perspective, he had such an impact on her she now gauges time based off of his death. Really important detail moving forward

I was wondering the "age" logic in this anime. Say Himmel and Heiter are same age and they went on their journey with Eisen and Frieren at 18, then the moment they finished, both of them are 28. Timeskip, Himmel passed at 78-80yo while Heiter still alive 20 years later and had another 4 years, so Heiter passed at ±100yo and he still looks quite good at that age at their first reunion after Himmel's death. But I guess, Heiter being able to live that long partly because he's a priest. That's why Heiter and Himmel aged differently.

"she's not human, is she?" She's got pointy ears, dude, and you've seen Lord of the Rings. XD Elves in pretty much EVERY fantasy story live thousands of years (at least), and always have pointy ears.

It's rare that you see a story AFTER such a large event like defeating the Demon King. So this is a nice take on it. But oh boy, it's one of the best shows I've ever watched. Seeing little Fern makes me smile. She's soo cute lol.

You shouldn't talk about your thoughts during the end credits. The lyrics of this song have a deep message, it's high quality, and it's part of the anime. It's as rude as talking during the end credits at the movie theater. Especially since it's the first episode of season 1.

You CANNOT miss with Frieren. Even if the series doesn't pop off for reaction, you should watch the show off camera. Trust me.

I know I’m commenting a lot but I just wanted to say that including my initial watch of Frieren, this is probably around my 10th time seeing it and 11:41 this makes me cry every single time. ❤

Himmel aged much faster than the others because he suffered for 50 years from the evil aura of the dragon's horn.

Assuming Himmel and Heiter were in their 20s when they started the journey, 30s when they returned, plus 50 would put Himmel in his 80s when he died, and an additional 20 would put Heiter in his 100s.

Quite a few of us believe the Shadow Dragon Horn stunted Himmel's growth and made him age less gracefully than he clearly should have.

Even though my comment is old, I still have to post it lol, didn't you guys notice that Frieren is an Elf? Or did you think that elves only lived a little bit longer? Elves commonly live for thousands of years
