Will, Kate, and Chris (from Frontier State Overland) flipped their Overland Trailer (HICKS). After our first night on an overland mountain road adventure leading to a remote lake in the Seven Devil mountains, a rogue bump in the road flips our overland trailer project (HICKS) and we have to figure out how to recover the trailer, what was damaged, and whether or not we can salvage the build.

This was a crazy adventure that ended abruptly. We learned a ton. We're looking at different types of couplers, shocks/springs, and how we might lower the COG on HICKS V2. Thank you for watching!

Perhaps some hubcentric wheel spacers widening the stance might help stability in addition to a lower COG.

I Overland with an M416. I kept the original luna ring and pintle setup. I’ve thrashed it pretty hard, including sliding it sideways in a hard turn on slush-covered pavement with no troubles. I did keep the tall and narrow NDCC (non-directional cross country) military tires on there as well. My center of gravity remains low.

Use a max coupler when you rebuild they will not let go. I would also look at putting some shocks on it to help dampen the bumps. I don’t particularly like the Timbren but it’s a decent option for a relatively cheap price if you have to scrap the axle but the system on the scout is way better but don’t know who makes it.

Those military trailers are were meant to be towed fully loaded behind fairly slow moving older Willie’s. Because of this when they are fairly empty or loaded with little weight they are like a pogo stick on the trail. A good way to cure this is to add shocks to quickly dampen the bounce of the leaf springs. Just my 2 cents.
@jasonperry2244
@jasonperry2244 2 года назад
If it was me, I would replace the coupler with something more offroad friendly. Check out a tow pintle, the military uses them to get their trailers full of supplies into some pretty off camber areas. Its too bad this happened on your trip, I am glad everyone made it out okay. You guys handled that situation very well, it could have gone a different way very easily. I can't wait to see what you guys end up doing with your trailer.

Good video to show that ball hitch isn't good for off-road trailers. Glad it was saved for the most part.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam 2 года назад
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I really appreciate it! Hitch/Coupler is a very interesting subject. We're definitely revisiting what type of hitch to do for HICKS V2. In some ways, it's not a bad thing the ball hitch came off in this situation because it allowed the trailer to flip without damaging the Jeep at all (lock and roll benefit). However, that would not have prevented the trailer from flipping or stopped the damage to HICKS. A Pintle/Lunette set up may have stopped the trailer from rolling because it's so light weight...but there's a risk that it would damage the Jeep in doing so. So while I'm not saying a ball hitch is better for off-roading, I am saying if the the trailer is going to flip (totally different convo on preventing that) you want it to do so without causing damage to your vehicle, which in this case it did.
@tgarza2787
@tgarza2787 2 года назад
Great video. I would have risked it and kept going though! Definitely need to invest in a better coupler. Those harbor freight ones are not very heavy duty, let alone off road worthy. Timbrens are crazy expensive but likely would have saved the trailer from the leaf spring launch.

upgrade time. I have spent a LOT of time towing a trailer off-road, including 2 that I built. An independent suspension on anything that light is a MUST. The leaf springs with no or little shock suppression will always insight a flip on what should have just been absorbed. Timbren is okay but I ended up using a 1973 Super Beetle suspension with air shocks on my last trailer and it was a boss on the trails. Secondly, please please please, ditch the ball mount. Until then, use a hitch pin or lock for the hole in the locking mechanism.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam 2 года назад
Sounds like you have a lot of experience towing trailers off-road! The hitch pin was in when the trailer flipped, it was just out because we were adjusting it when I took the video of the warped metal. We're definitely looking at different hitch system. I second the timbren suspension, and lock and roll hitch. I'm curious did you guys air down the trailer before the tail, or were your towing it on street pressure?
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam 2 года назад
We looked at Timbrens initially, but decided to go with a solid axel and leaf springs...now that we may have to replace the axel, we'll be revisiting Timbrens. We did air down...to 20 PSI before we hit dirt...although I'm hearing some folks air their trailers down way more than that.
@insaynbcr
@insaynbcr 2 года назад
@@Venture2Roam I was going to ask the same thing. I run the tires on my 1500lb offroad trailer at 15psi. These are just shy of 29" BFG KO2s on 15" wheels. Knowing my trailer has a 3500lb axle with the typical short trailer leaf spring setup from when I first built it, it can be bouncy. Not as bad with the tires aired way down though. I saved my rear springs and shocks off my '17 Tacoma TRD Offroad to eventually swap out to smooth out the ride.

This is exactly why you always use a proper couple on an off road trailer. I have a Ex-UK military Sankey trailer and have retained the original NATO pintle and Lunette , so If the trailer goes over, it will not damage the coupling. It is also braked and has an anti-roll bar. The trailer is actually very stable as has the same wheel track as the Defender. Your trailer seems to have a fairly narrow wheel track, which is never good for stability, it also bounces a lot. so might be worth considering adding better dampers and anti roll bar to the trailer, it should level it up better.
@Venture2Roam
@Venture2Roam Год назад
Yep, this is a Bantam Trailer. The company that originally designed the first Jeep. It's spec'd to WWII dimensions because it was made to be towed by the military. Designs have come a long way since then, but we love this thing regardless, it's a collectors item. We did put a different hitch coupler on it and took it out again to finish this trip: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qebrudVrLiE.html

I enjoyed the video, nice work. Sorry about your hiccup along the way that ended your trip early. I noticed you didn’t have a pin through your hitch release. Not 100% on if that would’ve kept the trailer attached. I helped a guy one time who had a trailer bounce off the ball and he didn’t have a pin either. I threw a bolt in there for him and helped him along. Something to think about. It won’t hurt to put one in.

That is so unfortunate you guys, after doing so much work and Im sure spending big $$$ I hate it when stuff like that happens. I always tell myself that if someone hits my Jeep and totals it, they better hope I'm too hurt to get out! All jokes aside, with all the mods etc. that you should or should not have done, at the end of the day this could have been totally avoided by driving slower. Not trying to harsh your gig at all, overspeed on trails is a complacency that I often fall into as well. A lot of our back roads in Idaho can be totally unpredictable and I have had my fair share of close calls out there. I hope a year on your cool trailer is all patched up and serving you well again. You don't need to be driving too fast to unhook a ball hitch off-road. You can do it slow-speed rock crawling as the vehicle and trailer articulate at different angles. And a good sized rock at slow speed can still kick a light trailer sideways. I don't think you should be on here armchair quarterbacking and making assumptions. You weren't there and don't know how fast they were driving. I'm sure they'll get a better hitch and better suspension on the trailer and this will be avoided next time.
