I was invited out to a private Mining claim where the world Famous Albertan Ammolite is found. We hit 3 different sites, and at one of them we found an Ammonite with an estimated value of $13,000.

Hello, love the shows. I am an opal miner and cutter from Australia and I am not %100 certain on your information about opal. Opal can certainly be formed as a replacement to what was originally there but it can also opalise what is there. We have many different crustaceans, plants, bones, creatures etc which are not replacement opal but infact opalised. I wonder if the ammonites colour are similar to that of opal? Cheers. They sure do look beautiful, mother nature at work again!!!!

Ammonite are cephalopods like octopi, squid, and nautiloids. Snails are gastropods, both are molluscs, but cephalopods aren't a variety of snail. Clams and such are molluscs too.

After I woke up today and got the brain running, I was like "Oh, it's Sunday. Dan uploads today. I wonder what it will be?". You have long since earned my subscription Sir. Thank you for the great content. I often think it would be super neat to make some epoxy (or something similar) tiles from a bunch of thin slices of the different pretty stones you unearth. Probably very spendy, but that's why it remains just an idea.

Saw you video on haters. I get it - I really do. We all have a tendency to see an equation like this: 10,000 compliments + one insult = one insult (the compliments are ignored). Its a tough thing to get over. Anyway, You are doing good work that lots of folks enjoy, so don't let the small percentage of jerks get to you. Best of luck and maybe one of these days we can do a collaboration.

As a long time amateur fossil hunter, I had never heard specifically of Ammolite but it is an interesting gem. Fairly rare because it was formed in a real limited area in North America. According to Google, they are only found along the St. Mary River, south of Lethbridge, in Western Canada (Alberta). This stunning iridescent gem only received its official gemstone status by the World Jewelry Confederation in 1981. This is what I love about Dan Hurd. I learn something new by watching every one of his videos.

After the last video (Rant) this one is too perfect. I bought a 2" Ammolite that I use as a worry stone a good while back, along with an ocean picture stone pillar for my mom's 58' sailboat. Also, after everything said about trying to reply back to every comment, don't worry. You are easily one of the chillest dudes I am subscribed to. I mainly watch videos about Cooking, Outdoor Survival, Foreign Metal Music, Blacksmithing, and of course Prospecting. You need to be the priority, so do me a favor and focus on your own mental and physical health before us, and especially before the haters.

While ammonites are related to snails, they where not snails. Snails have a very open body-plan where as ammonites have bodies that are divided into multiple chambers more similarly to a nautilus.
@Danhurd
@Danhurd 2 месяца назад
Ya I said it was sorta like a squid with a snail shell, because 95% of the people out there can understand and visualize that. If I said it was a Cephalopod 95% of the people watching would have no idea what I was talking about. I often simplify for the sake of understanding. Maybe it is the teacher in me.

I looked up the laws in Canada about fossil collecting. You are allowed to temporarily possess a common fossil but it belongs to the state. You are NOT allowed to sell it unless apparently you have certain permits.

Snail is as big of a misnomer as fish. It is a cephalopod like an octopus or squid, it just has a shell. Cool stuff by the way. Awesome site!
@Danhurd
@Danhurd 2 месяца назад
Ya, that is why I said it is *Kinda Like a "Squid" with a "Snail" shell.* I was trying to break it down to something everyone can understand. Only about 5% of my viewers would understand if I said it was a "Cephlapod". I try and not get overly technical with such a generalized audience.

To Facilitate Transport of the Fossil from the Field I would Recommend Polyurethane Automatic Packaging. Basically a Mylar bag with 2 pop-packs inside it. Pop both packs, place the fossil on the empty Mylar bag, and as the Polyurethane Foam expands it will Gently Surround the Fossil and Cradle it on a Flat Surface like a Board. Much Easier and Safer to Transport with Continuous Protection, even for months.

In northeaster PA, right up at the top corner of the state adjacent to the Delaware River, I found nodules in the shale. But these were very strange, unusually dense (over 5.5 g/cm3) and extremely hard. Breaking a couple open revealed them to be high compacted balls of metal sulfides! Some even had streaks of pyrite scattered through them. Very weird. I can't figure how they formed in shale.
