We Found a Gem! "Old Enough!" (Reaction + Discussion) 

Hajimete no otsukai (My First Errand - this is the real title, by the way) is an old Japanese custom of kids learning to do things by themselves. To gain independence. My kids go to Japanese public schools and my son’s teacher in first grade specified that they need to learn to walk to and from school and if we’re to pick them up, they need to pack up their things themselves and carry their bags and everything else. Instead of us carrying them. And if they forget something, we’re not supposed to run up to the school and bring it to them. It’s a way for them to learn to be mindful of things they’ll need for school and to literally carry their own weight. It must sound severe for others not used to the culture. But I can honestly say kids do get used to it don’t think any more of it by the time they’re in third grade. They even want to help out with more difficult things like cooking or washing dishes. I think they feel empowered when you trust them with things.

I grew up watching this show about 30years ago. One of the camera crews while he was filming a child got ran over by a car and died.
