I work (well currently laid off ) at a hydraulic hose shop up here in PA. I was going to post a comment to tell him to change all the hydraulic connectors to screw together style. If the hoses are 3/8 (its hard to tell if they are 3/8 or 1/2) some IVHP style connectors will make hook up much easier.

Just some suggestions for you: 1 - get those checked over by a service company, possibly certified - insurance will be happier that way. 2 - take the crew and go on a rescue course; yeah, you hire experts (good call), but having the skills yourself could save a life. 3 - maybe find out if the hydraulics on the rollback could be tapped into to run the jaws. You could keep a set in the truck with say 50' of hose, and be ready to extricate in seconds of pulling up and engaging the PTO. Plus, you'd have a set of Big Block powered jaws then. Even if you don't use them in an emergency, could be handy for post-crash cleanup.
@josephdecesaro1528

4 - get a good storage box that will fit the the whole (power source and all tools) set up that way you can easily be moved as unit and lets you stage it close by on a truck like the roll back but store it out of the way in a shed when they are not needed.
@johnfield7429

Just so you know, those Hurst tools are on the older side, the cutters especially aren't designed to cut the newer hardened metals. If you try and cut the wrong stuff you can actually shatter the jaws and they'll basically explode. Definitely get them serviced and looked at good. Us fire service guys get them serviced once a year.

You should do a collaboration with a fire department or nearest fire academy that's local to the Freedom Factory. You could work together to provide a unique training opportunity for their firefighters to practice cutting cars, rescuing people from overturned vehicles and all sorts of things. In return, they could possibly help teach you and your staff some of the basic skills with your extrication tools and fire engine, under the legal basis of being an "industrial" fire brigade. In many states, certain work places with special hazards, are allowed to organize a fire brigade from their own employees to be the initial response to an emergency, while the local fire department is on the way. The fire brigade would provide special knowledge about the facility and its resources and hazards to aid the arriving fire department and work along side them in handling the emergency. Another thing that you should consider doing is a voluntary safety walk through with your local fire department, so they are familiar with the layout of your facility, in case you ever have any emergencies.

The valve at the end of the hose is for you to be able to change tools while leaving the pump running. Just know that it’s bad for them to store them is the full closed position too. We use the ram to roll dashes, a pillars, b pillars, etc in the event of a patient being pinned. I’m sure the track fireman y’all hire will be happy to teach y’all more. As both a firefighter and freedom fighter, remember to always wear eye protection when operating those. Also, don’t ever stand between the tool and what you’re cutting (you didn’t here but just good advise). I’ve cut MANY of patients out with these. The door pin and brake pedal are the strongest pieces of metal on the whole car, but they’ll cut!
@andrewwargo4171
@andrewwargo4171 4 года назад
The second spreader you guys found is a “ram” it’s for “dash rolls” when a car is crashed. So you would make a relieve cut at the bottom of the door frame under the dash, place the spiked part under the dash and the other but end on the door frame. Then twist the throttle and it’ll start to roll the dash forward. This is great way to unpin someone’s legs.

I highly recommend you guys to grab at least 2 dash rams. They are crucial if someone hits the wall hard enough to push the dash back into the drivers legs. You can push the dash either up, or forward to free the legs. I know yalls tools are backups but I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve used the rams. The spreader will work, but not on all vehicles. The rams will push higher and farther than the spreaders, plus the rams will fit in much tighter spots. Awesome tools, and video! Love the large cutter. Hurst is all we’ve ever ran at our fire department and I’ve never had issues with any of their tools. Just keep them clean, greased and stored in a cabinet of some sort to keep the dirt off of them.

@hsdchip3
@hsdchip3 4 года назад
And when you disconnect them, make sure to keep the fittings clean.
@joshkarpoff3341
@joshkarpoff3341 4 года назад
That's the older style of Hurst extrication tool hydraulic hose fitting. You don't need to turn the pump entirely off to swap tools, but you absolutely need to have the pump in "dump" before you disconnect the fittings. On the newer single "coaxial" style Hurst hydraulic fittings, you don't need to touch the pump controls to disconnect. Very bad things happen with Hurst tools if you have high pressure building up in the line with no return to the pump because you disconnected that first or didn't connect that one properly with the older style fittings. Things I've seen for myself during rig check. That high pressure hydraulic fluid will absolutely screw up your body too as it cuts through you, like the meanest, nastiest water jet cutter you've ever seen. It's awful, they showed us photos during training. You really want to be wearing proper personal protective equipment when operating that stuff, even just to test it.

Nothing to do with a luxury. Different tools for different jobs. They have a fire engine. They are designed to put the water on the fire, not a whole lot else. A rescue truck is what holds the hurst tools and as the name implies, their job is to perform rescues. They are almost always plumbed to run the tools off the truck. Now that being said, certain places have rescue tools on their engines like where I work. In that case, they use the portable pumps like they have here. "Before they spend money" I've talked to them from a perspective of 'saving money', and it doesn't seem to get their attention. This channel is about as real as they get, except for the funding/budget aspect. Seems like they have a tap, which flows money to them, (subs, or us, in reality), because they spend it like there's no end to it. Most if us can't relate to unlimited funding. IE: who buys a new employee a brand new mini-motocross so they can 'play' with everyone else. I realize Spencer isn't just an employee. It's simply an example of 'money is NOT an issue'.

So what you've got is the power unit, the spreaders, two sheers (cutters), and two rams. The spreaders are most used for typical auto extrication because you can either pop a door and open it, or completely remove it using the spreaders alone. They're more versatile than you'd think. Or you can pop the door on the latch side, then use the cutters to cut the hinges. I'd only recommend that if your power unit is set up to run two tools simultaneously. If not, it's not worth the time to switch the hoses from one tool to the other. The cutters are mostly used to cut posts to peel or completely remove the roof...and cut roll cages in Ya'lls case. The Ram is most often used to perform a dash roll in the even that the dash has been pushed back/down and trapped the occupants lower extremities. The dash roll works best if you first use the cutters to make a relief cut in the lower front of the door frame. There's a bunch more you can do with the Hurst tools, but that's the most common uses for them.

Once that is happened, you take the O-cutter and you cut the door clamps. Don’t fight it because you ain’t gonna move it since it’s 10,000LBS of pressure. And with the car, cut the ABC pillars which are the arms on the windshield, between the two doors, and the back window. Make sure you have no power to airbags because it will explode. To make it more fun, put the spreader under the dashboard and the floor panel from the door jam, and it will break the dash up and it’s loud as hell. He’ll yeah brother

Before connecting those quick connects, spray those male and female hydraulic ends with brake clean to remove contaminants and always connect hose ends after disconnecting. That will make it last long. Also if you can't get them connected make sure the female end is clocked right. If it still won't connect hit the male and on a piece of wood to relieve pressure. To release pressure from the female end, you can use a screwdriver if you're careful.

There are so many factors that could go wrong if you have guys at the track and something goes wrong without your normal safety crew there. So I would recommend to have guys be trained to use those tools so if something goes wrong while the safety crew isn’t there, and you know you have people that are trained to help. I guess it's a neat idea but there's more to it. Those tools are outdated and borderline dangerous. Improper use is dangerous to the operator and victim. Vehicle rescue requires training and regular drilling to be proficient. Situations also require more than just a cutter and spreader, without even getting into the PPE requirements. Having untrained people running old tools in a life or death situation that occurs during a high risk activity is ignorant.

The cutter's are used to cut the A pillar, B pillar and a spot on the C pillar on both sides to take the roof back to get someone out that needs to cut out. If the steering wheel is in the way you can cut it off like the bottom half. Use them to cut the post it the middle of the car B pillar at the top and bottom. That will get you full access to the drive to get them out if the have to be put on a backboard. I was a Volunteer firemen and we go to the junkyard in practice on cars there so everyone knew how to use them and get faster at it too. The spreaders are used to pop the doors open. You can probably find out on RU-vid so you can see what I'm talking about if I didn't make sense.
