The English Benedictine Order of Nuns in preference to Sister called themselves Dame. Its a Convent burial ground. Must have been a convent some where in the locality.
@MrBobbalus
@MrBobbalus 6 месяцев назад
As someone has already commented, the cross markers are graves of Benedictine nuns. The Benedictine order used the term Dame in preference to Sister. The two larger stone crosses were for the priory wardens. The abbreviation OSB means Ordo Sancti Benedicti or Order of Saint Benedict. I'm guessing that there was a priory on that site in the past & a lot of the horticultural items & materials would've been for their gardens & allotments, as they would've been largely self-sufficient.

The Benedictine Ladies of the Monastery of the Glorious Assumption of Our Blessed Lady The English Benedictine Monastery of the Glorious Assumption of Our Blessed Lady was founded in 1597/8 in Brussels by Lady Mary Percy. The Community were expelled by the French revolutionary forces in 1794, and on their return to England, were provided with accommodation in Winchester where they remained until they outgrew the premises in 1857. Their new home at Old Hall, East Bergholt was extended considerably until WWII, when it was requisitioned by the War Office. After the war the Community decided to move again, the buildings at St Mary's Abbey being so poorly maintained by the troops who had used it as a transit camp. Their final move, in 1945, was to Frensham Hall, near Haslemere. The order was suppressed in 1975, by Bishop Michael George Bowen, and the last Nuns moved out to various other houses in 1976.

Alex, with those graves that place had to be an old priory. The way that woodland is planted up, lots of ornamental species of trees, to me indicates there was a big house nearby, possibly taken over by a religious order, and demolished at some point. That land rover in the rickety shed was a 1976 model. The crate of blue bottles, they were sherry bottles, Harvey's Bristol Cream. Best wishes from Wales.👍

Great video Alec, Ed, Ned, and Steve. At least there were deer there to take away from the scary grounds and utterly strange things left behind. I was wondering if there is a convent in the area, it could be that all of those "Dames" were of a religious order, in nature. It's possible an illness went through the living space, and took all of the women in a few year's time. The history would be interesting. Over here in the US, old (before 1920), many an owner or city's used the cemetery as a dumping ground for all kinds of things. From old cars to unused grave stones, to just plain junk. I've seen it and think it is extremely weird. Thanks, as always for the excellent video guys.
@sandynewman5533

Catholic cemetery. Abbess was the head of a convent, the dames would have been those in the convent that had not professed their final vows for the religious order under her leadership. The monk was there to administer the sacraments and offer the Mass for the convent.

They used to use those AA caravans to attend events like Carnivals, Motor Sports and classic Car shows etc to tout for business and sign people up to their breakdown service. Probably no coincidence that there is an AA caravan on site with so many Land Rovers around 😂

Spot on I remember seeing these in the early 80s watching Banger racing and air shows. I wouldn't be surprised if Coventry Car Museum hasn't got any of these on show. Or any other car museum up and down the land ? Always going to get storage for vehicles like this because of filming. Life On Mars a very good example. Proper vehicles back then aswell 👍

The first literal outdoor toilet rating, LOL! Spot on! Oh Deer! They were beautiful! I think the last one, so reluctant to leave, wanted to be a part of the explore! Loved it! Obviously a very peaceful property with the cemetery on the grounds. A rather sizable one and old, but not as old as expected. The close dates of death were odd. A Dame cemetery. Wow! So glad you read the stones. Shame, regarding the Land Rover. Looked in very good shape. The other lot of the old Land Rovers was definitely creepy! Reminded me of the American film, Wrong Turn! A very unusual property! Glad you shared the explore.

The oSB on the headstones stands for order of st Benedictine. An order of monks, the cemetery lists the females as dames, the Benedictine order referred to senior nuns as Dame and younger ones as sister. I would hazard a guess you had found a monastic cemetery

Another great explore. Wonder what the history of the graveyard is. Watching you guys takes me back to my younger days before the daily grind got in the way. Myself and 3 friends used to ride our BMX's around everywhere looking for places to have a nose and a wander. It's a shame to think that when sites like this and the interiors you visit are due to be 'deleted', that alot of the rare and antique finds will be destroyed, either by mistake or those who don't care for the objects that someone once held dear to them. Keep up the wanderings guys!

the landrover window. the rear section slides forward. that is all. the reason it was leaning out is because two studs have rusted. take the bolts off them and the whole window section is removable, as is the roof, the windscreen also folds down.
