An Affordable Sailing Catamaran! The start of a new adventure!
Duke and Virginia have found an affordable sailing catamaran, an old but excellent condition 1984 Performance Cruising Gemini 3000 sailboat. Not only is the value great, but this has a very narrow beam (for a catamaran) so it will be easier to find available boat slips, and a very shallow draft with the centerboards up which will allow for sailing in shoal waters and easy beaching!
We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. Please, consider becoming a patron today and help us to create art and spread positive messages about living life to the fullest!

I wanted to buy a Gemini in the mid 1990s but it was just outside my budget . So I settled on a Catalac Which had the same layout but was much heavier and had twin Yanmar diesels'. We sailed on this for four years from England down to the Mediterranean Sea . Visiting France Portugal Spain and much of the western Med , before returning to England via the French river and canal system (mast down). If you have half the enjoyment that we had you're in for a great adventure . Enjoy!

Hey, Ian! We are, in fact, having a great time with the Gemini. She needs a lot of work, at times, but the time spent is worth it. We enjoy raising the sails and traveling to new places. :)

Nick! Hey, buddy! Yeah, we hope we've improved a bit since Episode 1 (check the comments here... ugh). Recent videos have been (and will be) about boat projects, given the COVID-19 lockdown that caused a huge delay in things this season, but we are heading out soon on a sailing tour of the Northeast. Late in the Fall, we are headed from NY to the Bahamas. We'll stop in the Carolinas on the way and pick you up. :)

The Econo Traveller You’re welcome! We try to remind ourselves daily that anything can happen in life, so there are no guarantees that tomorrow will come. So, simply, live in the here and now rather than wait for a “better time”. We don’t always succeed, but our attitude has seen us dramatically ramp up our travel and experiences. Our hope is that you create opportunities to do the same!

These are the screws you need for your window #8 x 1-1/2 in. Phillips Flat Head Black Phosphate Sheet Metal Screw Thay will keep your plexiglass window from cracking as you tyutin the window down . Or you can buy the same screw that's a flat head that uses bolts to tying them down if the screws holes are through the saport structure.

That model with the outboard is easy to service and less problems then the new ones with diesels and the tanks for them always get gummed up. Thats why the outboards are so nice and always wonder why they stopped making them. I know they can cavitate in rough water sometimes. Shallow water these boats are great.
@Sailing9LIVES
@Sailing9LIVES 6 лет назад
Agreed! We didn't buy this boat specifically because of the outboard, but did decide early on to avoid the diesel models. Nothing against diesel, really, as in some ways a diesel holds the advantage. The component we wanted to avoid was the Sillette drive leg that seems to cause problems for so many Gemini (and Prout, I believe) owners. An outboard is simply an easier to service (and find parts for) option. So far, we are really enjoying the boat, and are looking forward to some upgrades over the winter before setting off on the Great Loop in 2019. Thanks for watching!

Great stuff guys . I was part owner with a 34 foot cat that was really a 31 foot with extended car hull to give more storage . The best advise for ocean sailing is repaired everything that needs repairing especially rudders even consider to beef them up . Replace rigging if its older than 10 years old and consider to replace with galvanised it is stronger than stainless steel . Fit a shower with 12 volt system to heat water . Most the time use a solar heated shower unit you can get from camping to shower on deck or inside the shower room to save on power demands . Put all the heavy gear in the Rear area of boat better tail heavy . These cats can't carry weight well at the front and running downwind can burry their noses so tail heavy is always best . bad weather don't run downwind bare poled or with sails ly hull or better still drogue chutes . If you have to run downing lots of ropes out the back to help keep the cat in straight route . In bad weather cats broach in millisecond far faster than the monohull and break rudders or centreboards if their down . Bad weather keep centreboards up or partially down if possible . If possible carry a spare rudder to replace broken rudder . Don't expect great speeds when fully loaded down with water food and gear for ocean cruising cats don't like weight . However when you get to your arrival point lighten up boat and watch some nice faster speeds . Get poles to pole out jibs much easier to have two jibs poled out going downwind than bother with main sails . Spinakers are for day use really . Consider to make a bow sprit to make a Genekar for later use . They are brilliant in light airs . get solar panels as many as you can fit and afford . They help the most . After that good battery like AGM or better LIFEPO4 lithium types but not cheap . Lean about SSB radio and get receiver to get forecasts at sea . Lots of great stuff on cat look the youtube Kittywake they had 26 foot cat for several years Bon Voyage

Thank you so much for all of your great advice! We are currently in the middle of a whole bunch of projects refitting the boat, and are well over-due for releasing an update video. In about a month we will set off for a tour around the New England coast, and then in October we will head from New York to the Florida Keys. After that, we are not 100% sure what our plans will be... but we've learned to not plan too heavily, as plans often change anyway!

I love the idea of an outboard motor rather than one in-board. Must be far easier to maintain or even replace. I started sailing a dinghy when I was in my teens on a lake not far from what is now called Harare in Zimbabwe. We used to hate motor boats with their wakes that made our dinghy really unstable. My Grandfather owned a catamaran, the Marmalade Cat. On the lake it had no cabin as the lake was for day sailing. I preferred then, the idea of a mono hull and still do!
@Sailing9LIVES
@Sailing9LIVES 4 года назад
I wrote up a nice long reply and RU-vid decided to go off into LaLa Land and not post it. :( We definitely like the outboard, as it has been super easy to work on, and some day will be simple to replace. Since ours steers (awkwardly, but reasonably effectively), maneuverability in a harbor is better than decent... not as good as a catamaran with an engine in each hull, but not bad. Duke grew up at a marina, yet never sailed before. His family was partial to power boats. I didn't know this, of course, so when we set off one day on a Hobie cat in St. Lucia I assumed he knew what he was doing. He did, but only academically... we sailed out of the large cove and out into rough water... sailed around for a few hours, and returned without a problem. Jerk! Our current boat is just what we were looking for... a small catamaran that can get us into very shallow waters (like the Bahamas) and will be comfortably large enough to live on for periods of time. After a few years, we will probably trade up to a larger monohull suitable for ocean passages... a different boat for a different kind of sailing. Thanks for watching!

I do not yet own a yacht, but I have money in my bank to cover the cost of one - even if it requires work. I have seen work on other boats, so it does not scare me silly. If you do the work In a yacht club, then here will always be people around to give advice. The nearest yacht club is in Richard's Bay, where I have tominvedtigate some sort of oxygen mask. Not long ago, I was hospitalised with severe asthma and I'm hard spent plenty of evenings in Richards Bay where the factory air gets to me and I can barely breathe. The last photo I saw of the Bay boats on the Hard that had been abandoned, there were a number of interesting restoration projects.
@Sailing9LIVES
@Sailing9LIVES 4 года назад
@@stephenkillick5812Sorry to hear about the asthma... honestly, that just sucks! Maybe it is better to locate project boats further away, but clear of the factory pollution near Richard's Bay. @stephenkillick5812
@stephenkillick5812 4 года назад
@@Sailing9LIVES I intend to look for a project boat at the Yacht Club in the Bay. Luckily where the club is, is not directly affected by the pollution but gets sea breezes. If I find a boat there, the option exists of trucking it to Mtunzini where I actually live, to work on. I need to weigh the cost of transport against the medical costs and inconvenience involved in restoring it at the edge of the sea! Other than that, the nearest club is further south at Point Yacht Club in Durban.

I know that my ex wife - before divorce - wanted to live there. After our divorce, I moved to Mtunzini where I have a sea view and get clean sea breezes all the time. Guys, Geminis are built to a price point. They are not for deep water, open ocean sailing and the boat and every system on the boat was done on the cheap Cheap CHEAP. If the boat was ever in charter service there has been no (zero) maintenance on anything. It fits the definition of a boat...A deep hole in the water into which you pour money. If you own this boat you should plan on spending another 20 to 30 grand on electronics, rigging and repairs. @Sailing9LIVES
@Sailing9LIVES 5 лет назад
Yep, we stumbled on it and rushed down to North Carolina to take a look. You can pick up a lot of used monohulls in excellent shape for that price point, but catamarans are a different story. There were other buyers ready to pounce on this boat, but we managed to close the deal first. For the money, she's in quite good condition, and we are confident that we'd find a buyer for more than we paid, if we should decide to sell her at some point. Probably not as much as $60,000 though. :) Newer used Geminis can be had for well over $100,000. Best of luck to you, Michael, in your search for your perfect boat!

The general consensus is that it is better as a coastal cruiser than a blue water boat. I would tend to agree. Several Geminis have crossed oceans, as they are quite capable little boats... but they are honestly not as robust as a true blue water sailboat. I hope this helps!

John Y Yaussi I don’t even remember there being any straws in this video, but perhaps there are... Plastic is the scourge of our oceans, yet ironically here we are sailing around in plastic (fiberglass, otherwise known as fiber reinforced plastic) boats. We, humanity, are the architects of our own destruction.

It's obvious you aren't pros at making videos but you can improve quickly. The music is too loud and your camera microphone is picking up an echo from the large room you are in. Get a better external Mic. If you're using a GoPro it can be mounted on it. Dude you're dressed quite bad too especially the boots/sneakers. All of this distracts people from your story which is why I hit play.

Someone stole the laces from your boots???
@Sailing9LIVES
@Sailing9LIVES 5 лет назад
When in prison, your laces are removed so that you don't hang yourself with them, nor strangle another inmate. That is not the case here, though. OK, first of all, those are not boots, Mark Jennings. Those are actually low-top Converse All-Stars. But, they are SPECIAL Converse. They are Converse X by John Varvatos. Same basic design as regular All-Stars, but made from different materials (heavy canvas, leather)… AND, most importantly here, they are INTENDED to be worn without laces. I wonder if John Varvatos went to prison and was inspired. #fashiondesigners Anyway, not being a fashionista, these were picked up at a nearby Converse outlet store because they were sorta' interesting (there are a lot of weird Converse in my closet) and because they fill a very special need in my footwear arsenal: they slip on super fast when there's a fire call in the middle of the night and I need to run out the door in a hurry. So, there you go. As Paul Harvey used to say, "now you know [dramatic pause] the rest of the story".

Yes, she is a cute young woman and yeah there is a little bit of a gap as you said in the begining, so how did the two of you meet? Really, none of that matters after she is an adult, and is of sound mind, (not on a drunkin whim) If you are what, Floats her boat, then whos to have a damn thing to say about it? I say, good on ya Duke, you lucky dog.! The best of luck to both of you, and maybe we'll see you in the "blow" one day! She's a l9vely Cat, and I hope she serves you well, I'm talking about the boat now😼👍🍀😸The only thing i csn think of mentioning is, if you haven't taken a boating safety coarse i would suggest that for the both of you. It may not seem important, but in an emergency, how could she possibly know the first thing to do it for instance if you were sailing along at seven or eight knots and she went into the head for a powder and you went aft for a pee and slipt on a rope laying on a step, and in the drink you went, and because you ywo were having such s great time you had the music up loudand sje wasn't feeling rushed, she didnt return until ten minutes later, because she was getting a little bit hungry and stopped in the galley after her powder, well mate, I don't think she is going to know the first thing about what to do to find you, and you do the msth my friend how far do you think she has traveled at seven knots for ten or fifteen minutes? Both of you nerd to understand hoe to recover a man overboard and how to promptly bring that vessel about and get the wind off her sails in an instant. And make a note of your gps. Location so you can get some help to assist you if the other can't locate you straight away. Its a tragic mistake new boaters make when they get into a grand new adventure like decixing to become off grid cruisers. Don't either one of you make that mistake. Take care of each other so you have beautiful stories to tail around campfites on the beach. Open the hatch on top of your heads and stock pile as much info as you can muster in before you sail. Til next time my friends, norcalsaltydog

Christ on a bike, Tom, you just might win the award for being the funniest guy to yet post a comment to our channel! Let me answer your first question. Well, maybe I will first remark on how you assume that Duke is the one who answers all of these comments... because truth be told, he DOES NOT. Not ALL of them. But in the moment, He is I, and you DO have Duke writing you back... though Virginia had a good laugh at your story above. Back to that question... I'll skip the long back story. Basically, she was finishing college and working at a diner. I was a diner aficionado and one day stopped by the diner she was working at after some work trip to somewhere. I recall walking to my car in the parking lot saying out loud "yeah, but she's WAY too young!". Fast forward to maybe a year later, and we were chatty diner friends... and then her lowlife boyfriend pushed her too far and she dumped his ass... and she woke me up with a 6 AM phone call with the good news. FF again, and we got married about 2 years later. 2+ years later there's a baby here. Virginia doesn't even hate me yet. Weird, I know. As for a "safe boating course"... we took one. We have the wallet cards to prove it. 100% on the final exam. The wallet card wouldn't help a lick when she FINALLY emerged from her powder and snack break and found herself deep in a MOB situation. Maybe we will do some drills on that this summer... or maybe I will just float away. We'll see.
