We are renovating the old station front path including cleating all the weeds and debris. We also think we may have made a fantastic find that we weren't expecting!
I think a lot of soil has been washed from the slope onto the station forecourt over the years. Even if I am just a "stupid German" spectator, I wonder why you use a wheelbarrow to move the soil to another place. I also trained as a gardener three decades ago. And we often had soil wash off the slope, you want to create 2 or 3 gardens. You can at least store the (fertile) soil nearby. And again about the pruning from an earlier video. If you chop it up, you can use the chopped material as ground cover against weeds. Less work afterwards due to less weed growth. But very interesting videos. I can't wait to see how it develops into a Victorian piece of jewellery. Greetings from northern Germany.
One of my all-time favorite movies is The Railway Children from 1970. I hope that you can find a way to watch it?! Husband and I bought a derelict stone schoolhouse in northwestern Ireland, and moved from NYC into a renovation site. (We never set foot in either the school, or County Leitrim before the purchase - so I envy you your 20 minute visit!) Your front flagstones remind me of what is our front yard and grass....turns out it’s just whatever has been growing on top of the cement playground! It’s a BEAUTIFUL building - and I wish you all the luck in the world. These old buildings were built for the ages, but for other purposes - and they don’t bend easily to home life. If I have only word of advice - it’s INSULATION. Don’t skimp, get the good (expensive) stuff, and cut corners on other, less important things. Bring back your fireplaces, as they will always be a simple form of heat in times of deep freeze - and enjoy the process. It’s a great adventure, and one that I truly miss.... Happy new year to you and your family! Well done!
What a magical place ! So happy it has found sensible human beings that will take care of it. It's like stepping back in time. All our support from south Italy . Best Wishes.
A suggestion. Remove the row of paving against the brick and lay porous pipe and cover with gravel for drainage to keep the walls dry and reuse the paving elsewhere.
Such a lot of work, even with the power washer, but what a difference! Definitely check out where the water goes from that downspout. Once the stumps are out, you'll be on your way. Finding old features under overgrowth is always so fun, like discovering an old temple in the jungle. lol. Happy Christmas!
What an amazing property. Can't believe it has a greenhouse and garden areas there. Something you don't typically associate with a railway station. And the outside lamp lights as well!!! You have a diamond in the rough! And the inside space as well! It will be a wonderful journey discovering the history of the station and the people that saw there loved ones off for adventures as well as wars. And see the station in action through all the years and events. Will definitely be watching the progress on your journey to make it your home. Very surprised that many things there have not been looted and removed over the years. Would love to see an antique looking push cart there in front all brightly painted and filled with flowers. With an umbrella style cover over the flowers. And the benches for seating in front. It will be amazing!!❤
One step at a time ( Baby steps) it is all coming together. One the Side of the house. Use some of the paver slabs to fill up the front area. Make it all match. Use the bricks where you removed by the side of the house. You working very hard. Try power washing the building. Make the bricks stand out. Keep up the great work and video's. Regards 🇿🇦.
Thank you! Our jet washer broke down when we were doing the front, not surprised as we’ve had it for years and it was only little. We need to invest in something with a little more power 💪
Amazing results of what two days of work can do .. just imagine what the 'Old Station' is going to look like in 3 months .. Keep doing what your doing .. Because what you are doing is nothing short of amazing !!
What a find! Looking forward to following you on the restoration journey from here in the USA. When complete it will be one of a kind and am thinking....beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful! Can’t wait to see everything you do! My husband is retired from a railroad ❤️ the patio looks great, just grade that dirt away from your home
The additional slabs normly form a channel for the dispersal of rainwater discharged from a roadway .There must have been vehicle access to the station front door ?
Join the Welsh Railway Research Circle and find out how the station was. Their HQ is at Rhiwderin. You're dealing with history, I'm sure you'll respect it.
SUGGESTION Don’t put new pavers in the empty spots. Find an inconspicuous spot with old pavers and put them in the empty spots. You can use the new pavers in a hidden location. 👍🏼
I have just found your channel and what I have seen so far I am enjoying, it is great to see people like yourselves buying and old building like this and having the effort to restore it into a home, If I was ever over your way I would come and give you a couple of days free labour. now I assume those two tree/bush stumps are going to go??? keep up the great work, and yes I have subscribed.
I'm sitting here thinking oh I'd like to have a go at that area or I could clear that bit, but unfortunately I'm at the other end of the UK but I just want to wish you all the very best for your future project it looks really amazing. If I won the lottery I would do exactly the same as you, I will follow your project with interest. Cheers
Buy Salt Peter from where you get your prescriptions from. Drill holes into cut down tree trunks place the Salt Peter inside the holes close the holes off with the saw dust from drilling the holes. By the next year the tree trunks will be able to be hand pulled from the Earth.
The vegetation I would be putting into a wheel barrow and placing in a skip. The vegetation you have removed you are only relocating and will need to move it again. Try to limit your double handling.
Love the work you’re doing! One suggestion: use your legs more with less bending and twisting at the waist when scraping and lifting with the shovel, and switch sides regularly. (I’m a chiropractor and my back is getting sore just watching you!)
bit of hard graft and viola, instant transformation. I would lift and relay some of those pavers - particularly if you can take the Holly stumps out. Use kiln dried sand to fill the gaps in pavers and Gallup XL weed killer to keep it grass and weed free - it's expensive but it really works. Thanks for sharing.
I'm curious to see if you can avoid chemicals altogether in the garden and whether you source eco/natural insulation for the building. They certainly wouldn't have had access to much in the way of man made products in 1895.
Looks amazing! Maybe you could contact Ben at Flawless Cleaning Services - he's got an amazing RU-vid channel and I'm sure this would make for some great content for him and he could give you lots of input and help on your journey to the amazing place this will most definitely be. A win-win for you and Ben and lots more content for us. Can't wait for the next video.
We were so pleased! There have been times when this whole thing has seemed so daunting but just clearing an area like this really makes it feel worthwhile.
A "stump grinder' is what we'd use, here in the USA to remove those, well, tree stumps. Basically a large, powered , rotary grinding wheel. Can be rented at a 'big box store' in the USA, or maybe a local landscaper has one?
We’re planning to hire a stump grinder to get rid of them and test the roots, a few people have suggested products to use. I have dug a few stumps out in my time but nothing on this scale, my poor back wouldn’t cope!!
Think it must be a wife thing as mine says exactly the same thing when I'm doing or I've completed a project. Suppose though as we've talked about it, it is we. 🤣😂🤣
Well a lot of people say we’ve renovated their property when in fact they have paid builders , plumbers ,electricians etc to do all of the work and all the owner has done is write a cheque , but they always say ,this is the house we have renovated. So at least this family are doing what they can themselves and good on them . 👍🏻
Each according to their skills and strengths. Yes the gentleman is doing the heavy lifting and power washing but is his wife cooking cleaning making the brews helping the kids with home work doing the channel behind the scenes stuff it's We even if you only see he ❤❤ #WhatAGreatDad ❤❤❤
It will be a while. We need planning to convert the upstairs and we are going to have to take a few ceilings and floors out. Will take time but worth it.
Great work! Just now came across your channel and am interested in watching you bring the station back to life. You mention replacing some missing slabs in the front walk. As a suggestion, might you not replace the slabs with concrete slabs? Maybe take the opportunity to do something a bit different...like the brick or something else? It could break up the 'commercial' look of the walkway. Just a thought. Looking forward to your others projects and plans! Subbed today.
Thanks for watching. Some of the paving has been replaced with red brick which looks nice. We could do that or there are some of the paving slabs at the side we could move.
I stumbled on your channel and was immediately interested. My grandparents were railroad station agents in Texas, USA. They were born around 1900 to the age of your place would have been similar to their timeframe. So I started reviewing your videos. I have subscribed but not sure I can handle the background music. It’s so repetitive that I can’t stand it. Sorry. I like your voice and the stories you tell. Consider leaving it off if it doesn’t add to the narrative. ❤
Don’t be sorry, we’re always grateful for the feedback, we haven’t made videos before so we’re learning as we go. The music has been mentioned before and we didn’t put any in the most recent video 👍
The line closed to passengers on the 10th of September 1962. According to a book we've got 'the building became as desirable residence after line closure' 🤔
Just a newbie to this channel and I'm absolutely GOBSMACKED at the miriad of thoughtless comments on the 'we' thing here. C'mon people, give this couple a break and either enjoy their efforts or move on to another channel. They are new at this, they are both doing their best and it takes a team doing all sorts of jobs to create the content. If it offends you that one person is busy at one job while another person is busy at another, then just move on to different content. Sheesh....
I’d love to know how people could afford to do this without working!! We both work full time, all of this work has been done on evening and weekends. Now we’ve taken this on I think the children will retire before we do lol 😂
Os videos sao muito interessantes. Por favor, sugiro tirar esse fundo musical. Sua voz eh bonita, voce faz otima narração, essa musica atrapalha e da dor de cabeça....
