We Found The Daytime Thief Who's Eating Our Cats' Food !! 

Hi everyone. This video is the continuation of the video called “Surrounded by Cats and Hedgehogs”. So I wanted to clarify some things. First of all, I explained the living situation of Walter in the last section of the following video starting from 12:20 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Fj2b1LMWZQ.htmlsi=3QcniNhUGsCqGwmk In addition to what I explained there; we live in a housing estate which consists of multiple close buildings. While the front yards are kind of considered as private gardens (That’s how we were able to build our front yard enclosure for our cats. But even though it is considered as a private garden, we still had issues with the site management and some of the neighbors but I’ll talk about that some other time); the backyards are considered as shared space (with the walkways). So we couldn’t do much with Walter’s space unfortunately. That was the maximum of what we were allowed to do. Of course I would have wanted him to roam free in a big yard but right now, this is all we can do. (He is not allowed to run free without a leash within the housing estate) By the way, we moved here in the summer of 2020 and around one year later, after seeing the existing and potential future problems about our living situation here, I took some steps towards a potential move in the future. I’ll talk more about that under one of our upcoming videos this month. So overall; Walter has a little grassy area to use in non raining days which is located behind his kennel; he has summer umbrellas for shade (last year’s umbrella got torn out by our backyard cats as you’ve seen in the video called “surrounded by cats and hedgehogs” but this year, he has a way bigger and taller umbrella, so I’m hoping it’ll last longer. Most of these clips are from before and the beginning of summer so you haven’t seen the new umbrella yet; you’ll see it soon); he has a cooling pad (though he never uses it, he prefers laying on the stone ground); he has outdoor beds; and in the winters all our backyard cats and Walter have heat reflecting blankets under them. I am writing these in details because I saw that some of our viewers wanted to know all about these. And of course I take him to daily walks 2-3 times a day and he gets to spend some time in the backyard’s big grassy area a few times a day too (with leash). Apart from that, as you know from the earlier videos, there was a village that Walter and I used to go to very frequently. When we go there, he gets to run freely without a leash and bathe in the stream. But we haven’t been going there for a while; we now have a different place to go and I’ll talk more about that place under that upcoming video as well. Evlerin arka bahçeleriyse bir nevi ortak alan sayılıyor. (Her ne kadar site içerisindeki evlerin yerleşim düzeni ve bizim evin bulunduğu konum sebebiyle nerdeyse hiçbir komşumuzun yürüyüş yolu bizim bahçeden geçmese de, yine de ortak alan sayılıyor.) Dolayısıyla Walter’ın yeri konusunda daha fazlasını istememize rağmen malesef yapamadık. Yapabileceğimizin en fazlası bu oldu. Tabii ki ben de özgürce koşabileceği bir bahçede yaşasın isterdim ama şu anki durum malesef bu şekilde. Bu arada buraya 2020 yazında taşınmıştık ama yaklaşık bir sene kadar sonra, hayvanlarımızla ilgili hem o dönemde de var olan hem de muhtemel olarak ilerde karşılaşabileceğimiz sorunları düşünerekten gelecekteki muhtemel bir yer değişikliğimize yönelik bazı adımlar attım. Bu adımlardan bu ay yüklenecek olan videolarımızdan birinin altında detaylıca bahsedeceğim. Yani sonuç olarak; Walter’ın şu anki yerinde kulübesinin arkasında, yağmur yağmayan günlerde kullanabildiği küçük de olsa çimenli bir alanı var; yaz döneminde gölge yapsın diye bir plaj şemsiyesi var (geçen seneki şemsiyesi arka bahçedeki kedilerimiz tarafından parçalanmıştı hatırlayacağınız üzere; o yüzden bu seneki şemsiyesi çok daha büyük ve yüksek. Videolarımız günceli epey bir geriden takip ettiği için henüz görmediniz, yakında bir videoda illa ki görürsünüz); her ne kadar hiç kullanmasa da soğutucu bir minderi de var (taşta yatmayı tercih ediyor); dış mekân yatakları var ve kışın tüm arka bahçe kedilerimizin altında olduğu gibi onun da altında ısı yansıtan ve sıcak tutan battaniyelerden var. Detaylıca yazdım çünkü bunları merak eden bazı izleyicilerimiz olmuş. Ve tabii ki günde 2-3 kez yürüyüşe çıkıyoruz ve yürüyüş sonraları arka bahçedeki büyük yeşil alanda vakit de geçiriyor (mecburen tasmalı bir şekilde). Bunların haricinde; eski videolarımızdan hatırlayabileceğiniz üzere sık sık Walter’la gittiğimiz bir köy vardı. Orada tasmasız, özgür bir şekilde koşturabiliyordu ve içinden sürekli taşları ayıkladığı ve yıkandığı bir deresi de vardı. Ama artık epey bi süredir oraya gitmiyoruz. Artık gittiğimiz başka bir yer var; oradan da yine daha sonra detaylıca bahsedeceğim. Bir sonraki videoda görüşmek üzere..

Hello, conservation biologist here! Hedgehogs have decreased significantly in Europe in the last few decades, I can imagine that the trends are similar in Turkey. Having so many hedgehogs in your yard is a good sign for the local hedgehog population. However, hedgehogs are nocturnal (night active) so having one casually walking around your garden during the day is a bad sign. I suggest that you get in touch with a wildlife rehab facility or vet, or maybe a local zoo, to ask for advice. You may have to start feeding the cats in a way that prevents hedgehogs from getting access to food. Good luck! 🙂

Apart from breaking the cute-onomer and the sheer kindness and glorying in our non hominid cousins...there is also the film making and story telling craft. The way he composes the scenes he films - the angles, the lighting, the getting the cats and dogs in the right spots and great expressions...even the dew dripping from the wiggling hedgehog nose. The music, which was just so unexpected but perfect. The way everything is cut together to show the story. And the bits of narrative, which never repeat what we see, but are like grace notes. There is so much talent and skill in this work. Is this something he does or has done professionally? For it certainly looks that way.

When time is near, the hedgehogs come to grab a bite of catfood yum. They only came when it was dark but ran away at Walter's bark. Then they came when it was light to fill their tummys with delight. They held the kitties, some at bay, to eat the cat food of the day. Now one knows, it wasn't safe to impead in Walter's private space. Their hunger keeps them coming back to enjoy the kitties' tasty snack. It's good they'll stay whatever may, to brighten everybody's day. Tyfs your beautiful videos. 💕🦔

I have a momma Opossum that has lived in our yard. She has had several "batches" of babies under our Catio. Yep. They enjoy the leftover dry cat food when they can sometimes. They are our residents too. The kitties are completely fine with them as well. We could learn a lot by how animals often just live together 😊. Thank you for being such a kind person.

I really like your choice of music in your videos. My neighbor's cat insisted on coming in my house a few minutes ago to have some kibble and to get out of the extreme heat we are having. The hedgehogs know the back yard is safe. A true feral cat would know how to flip them over before they could curl up in a ball, and eat them instead of the kibble. The spines are only on top.

They are very cute. Ours here in Australia have very thick very sharp needles on their backs, no way would a cat be able to get to a cat biscuit under them, not if they value their eyes….ouch

Walter has such excitement in his yard. He is a great watchdog. I had a skunk that used to eat with my cats and thank goodness my dog was just fine with that.

The hedgehogs have learned that Walter bark says "hey, your not supposed to be here". They know Walter won't hurt them. 😊

Adorable! There aren't any hedgehogs where I live but we have skunks, opossums, raccoons, squirrels etc. that share the patio and yard with our cats (pets, strays and ferals). Generally most creatures can co-exist just fine provided there is enough food supply. That paito / walkway tile is just gorgeous by the way.
