Welcome to Stab's Best Wetsuits of 2019/2020 (The Northern Hemi edition).
Brands included: Rip Curl, Quiksilver, Billabong, O'Neill, Feral, and Volte.
Our objective: discover the warmest 3/2 and most comfortable 4/3.
Reasoning: nobody wants to wear a 4/3 if they don't have to, so it's our job to keep you in a 3-mil as long as possible. But if that extra millimeter is required, we want to make sure that you don't end up in a rubber straitjacket.
Tester: Stab's resident tech geek, Michael Ciaramella. Mikey's utter ignorance of these six neoprene brands makes him uniquely qualified for the task, as he is wholly unbiased in his preferences (he's only worn Xcel suits for the past decade).

did you evaluate the putting on and removal of the suit? That is quite important once numb and walking back to your car after dark after surfing lake Michigan. I guess this is only a test for thicker suits. Please invest in a review for cold water suits! No silly ice bath shit, just the ability to put it on and take it off. Taking my suit off is the hardest part when I am frozen and my hands are all cramping, it's so hard. I need a suit that can make that easier. Surfing is all muscle memory, and all the suits are now flexible enough for performance at my level....but at the end of the day, i'm cramping and need help getting this suit off. What suit is easy to take off?

Mikey -- rotate through these suits for the winter and let us know how the warmth holds up. I had used O'neill for a decade and now I'm trying my hand with Rip Curl (the "warmest" suit 2 years in a row per Stab). While the Rip Curls are warm and that fuzzy lining is very soft against the skin, the suits leak at the seams after a few months, drastically dropping their warmth. Also, I am interested in the weight of the suits when wet. I feel like some suits have a low dry weight, but soak up a lot of water and visa versa. Thanks!
@sectionmaker
@sectionmaker 4 года назад
yeah Rip Curls always seemed to me to leak, and then get heavy after a season or two. i like Oneils 4/3 but got a online billabong for 150....seems warm and wellmade, but built in hood is WAY to tight, I might cut it off!!!

Also you get used to the cold. Better idea would be to test the suits on 3 different days, in a climate controlled environment and he doesn't know which suit is which (blindfolded)
@UkoZJ
@UkoZJ 4 года назад
The test is a good example of bad experimental design: statistically invalid. It would be much better to perform less trials with more samples. Take for example the ice bath: it would work better if you just repeated the bath a couple of times on different days with random order of wetsuits. As it was done, It is easy to argue that the second trial which performed best was only due to body acclimatization to cold temperatures, while the first bad performance was due to thermal shock and the third was due to the loss of caloric/energy reserves available to you after two baths.

Unscientifically biasing the wetsuit market in 2020 - good job Stab. I'm sure these videos have a rather profound impact on the sales of wetsuits in the next year, and to think it was generated by a series of low-sample size, unimportant tests is crazy. Maybe you should hire a researcher or test engineer to conduct your tests next time.

Does anyone else feel that paddling in a good old fashioned back zip is in fact more flexible then a chest zip or even a zipper less? I think all this zip free for flexibility is yet more marketing tactics, I used an old rented suit a few months ago with a back zip, it was an entry level cheapo suit and was super flexi then tried out a brand spanking new xcel comp x and was surprised how less stretchy this all bells and whistles suit was even after a load of surfs, part of it I felt was the extra bulk needed when using a front entry system in comparison to a back zip.

@@travistarpson4957 Eh, debating that for my next suit. Here in SoCal, at least for me, it's either a 3/2 + booties or a 4/3. Been basically doing the 1 season 1 suit deal w/ the 3/2, cause I feel like a 4/3 wouldn't make it 2 full seasons. Seems like it would be hot as hell the first half the 1st season, then fine for a while, then too cold the second half of the 2nd season w/ all of the tears and pinholes. Plus you can reuse old 3/2s as spring suits and tops.

I've only used a 3/2 because raw dog or nah dawg, I like that bareback feeling when shredding. Is it worth it to buy a high quality 3/2 and say fuck it? Or should I go full trojan and get a 4/3 extra warm suit.

@@livinginSantaCruz831 "JOB inked a lifetime deal with Buell and you can too!" that's good enough marketing for me, but I don't want to stand out in the lineup with a flashy suit... all recognisable as the guy dodging barrels and pulling out last minute, just gonna become a drop-in target hahahaha

7:18 when you go to rip a roundhouse and some gaper let’s go of his longboard and it’s waiting for to ding your board on in the whitewater. 🤬😤🌊💥↩️🏄🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️👎🏼

Lol this dude would not last in the East Coast Surfing the winters lol I won’t go thicker then a 5.4 I try an wear my Hurley 4:3 as long as possible even if I just get a 40 min surf in December by January the water is already 30 degrees and air temps are mostly in the 20 and lower unless we get a what we call a spring day weather in the 40’s lol .. I have a O’Neal superfreak 3:2 that I use in the late spring they are super flexible but they suck they rip so easy for a winter suit I’ve always stuck with ripcurl they have lasted me the longest my dawn patrol is going on 3 winters now only has a small leak in the leg but I fixed it for by second Winter suit I just picked up a flash BOMB 💣 awesome suit i love that they are more flexible then the dawn patrol.
