That's a tough one! It most certainly looks like oil starvation on that rod journal. Unfortunately, I have had one that looks like that before 😂 I'm not super familiar with the SBC oiling system, I'm a weird small block dodge guy, but I think that rod is fed off of #4 main?? Maybe the higher than normal oil pressure is an indicator of partial blockage or restriction. Maybe the main bearing has a story to tell when you get further into it. Or if there isn't a blockage to be found, maybe rod side clearance is too tight? If you can't get the oil out fast enough, hard to get new oil in on the rod journal. I'm not sure, just brainstorming ideas. Looking forward to what you find!

Does your data logger record during the burnout? You using a some kind of two step on the burnout? It sounds really high rpm to me, like either valve floating on burnout or up on the limiter set at 8000+. Valve float @ around 8500, 9000, part throttle so very little downward pressure on piston = very hard on con rods. I'd keep the burnout rpm 7000 max. It's still very unlikely that would cause a rod failure though. Until you can rule out lack of lube on the bearing by finishing the tear down, this would be my second guess following lack of lube. Third guess, that piston was installed backwards cause how it was rotated during removal, and it wanted out lol.

@@MidwestStreetCarsAuto yea like Justin was saying the pass before the the car had a ton of oil pressure all throughout the last pass so it wasn’t Jackie it may have been the tune Justin put in the car before the second pass if he did any changes to the last pass he never said in the upload if I recall so that was too much for the engine in caddy jack it could be a lot of things but it wasn’t Jackie’s driving style by any means only time will tell what the cause of the piston breaking as well as gashing a hole on the side of the oil pan

Chief and Jackie I love your videos you do things totally different to anyone else and don’t hide shit!! That SBC issue is just shit luck.. A few times in previous videos even from some of the 1st passes it’s sounded a little strange in the burnout especially at high rpm it changed note and sounded different.. was it over reving in the burnout at the point there’s no real load on the engine as the wheels are spinning? Not enough valve spring? Or even too much? Or just plain and simple too many rpms??? I had the same thought also from how short the conrod broke to the piston?? Keep up the great work! Sending positive thoughts from the UK , cheers Dancey

Jackie mentioned "the oil pressure was really high".. more so than normal by the sound of it. Also, it looks like that one bearing was starving for oil. Is there any chance the rod bearing was blocking the oiling hole so oil couldn't flow through the bearing. Which would raise oil pressure due to blockage AND kill the rod bearing?
@the_hobby_cavethcracing444
@the_hobby_cavethcracing444 Год назад
Sometimes parts just fail...with the rings being in such good shape, it doesn't appear that cylinder was starved for oil, unless a bearing spun on the rod journal causing it to lock on the crank and snap the rod...

Well that’s obviously true but why is the question as to why the piston broke like it did and like Justin said the pass before the piston broke it had a ton of oil pressure. My theory is that the engine wasn’t put together like Jackie was saying when the push rods were exposed she noticed that their was color then none on the next,I’m sure you and Jackie will figure it out when your engine builder tears it down more so you both need to stay optimistic about the whole thing because I’m sure you will build it up stronger than it is now best of luck to you both and I always enjoy watching your RU-vid videos

@oikkuoek
@oikkuoek Год назад
Glad that the block looked okay, and the heads were relatively intact. That's a good start. I would still tune the rev limiter differently. And the mysterious stutter on the fast pass is still unsolved. Right before the finish line. On a high compression engine, the risk of hydro lock is always present, and in this case most likely culprit. The rod didn't look like it had catched the rod bearing, it just got beat up. BUT this is also a mystery engine. So although banging against a hard limiter is never a good thing, there's still oil clearances, mismatch rod pairs, and the simple harmonics created by the rev limiter. There was also a lot of fuel in the oil, so the cylinder could've got dry and heated the piston. What if the excess oil pressure is due to clogged oil passage? And even with the risk of losing the heart, when running carburetor(s), flooring it on the leave is more benefitial than having it floored in the beams. This way there's more air velocity and thus more fuel in the system at the launch. This way you can arm the nitrous based on pedal position directly, and the delay comes naturally. Also, rich mix at the start on low rpm creates softer combustion. Although the initial hit on the tyre is harder, it is also softer. Was it just the driving? No. Was it just the tune? No. Was it just the engine? No. It was like it always is, a combination of all of these. Again, it popped the intake way back when second outing at the street. It also hopped the tyres when the rear was too stiff. All of these are the seeds to the rod failure. Every fallen dam had a tiny hairline crack first. Also I would like to thank you for proving me wrong last week, and uploading two videos on YT. That was amazing. And I would like to buy a hoodie, but I'm flat broke. Maybe some day when I get over the poverty line, though not gonna happen in near future. From Siberia, with love.

I’m wondering if the spring on that cylinder weakened and floated the valve kissing the piston sticking it open a little and causing detonation in that cylinder. As for the rod journal on the crank not having oil I’m wondering if the previous pass is when the initial damage happened and caused bearing damage causing zero oil on the next pass when the motor let go. 1,000 different things could’ve went wrong but it could be the simplest thing that caused it

I know ya'll were checking plugs each run and it's sad they didn't show anything prior to this mishap. I believe the valve shoulder comment should be looked at closer. 1.) Maybe wrong valve order? 2.) Or maybe after the prior aggressive passes the valve lash needed checking/tweaking? 3.) Car warmed up enough? Or maybe hot engine expanded piston/ rings dimensions too quick for adequate lubrication causing friction on piston and resulting in failure? 🤔 Very intriguing since things seemed to be getting closer to being dialed in. 4) mentioned that one pushrod was hitting other rocker arm... was this rocker arm ( the one with the loose pushrod) loose?, pushrod shorter than required), bent or snapped and then hitting the other rockerarm? ( curious). I know you guys will figure it out and I hope to see you in the 4's very very soon! ;) ya'll rock!

Aluminum pushrods/ steel pistons issue. Nitrous runs before effect aluminum pushrods differently? Just throwing things out there...Good Luck!

That bearing spun, tightened up and blew the bottom of the rod off
@gearheadindustriesmedia6890
May have had a tight bearing clearance 🤷🏽‍♂️ wasn’t a problem till the bottle, that may have been enough to hurt it. Hope you fix it soon, so hooked on the channel.. think you guys are awesome together

Big Chief I would be looking through the oil passages on the crank to make sure they are clear. On that rod double-check that your holes were lined up on your mains. I know what you thinking there would have been other ones affected top half of the motor to but I like to check everything. Then I would probably just be curious that maybe that rod bearing turned a little in the cap like you said that rod put it's two weeks in or the bearing did! Maybe the tabs broke off the bearing and turned spinning during the first run an most the time blocking the oil Passage to that rod. Had to guess I would say it happened in the first run when you lost power. But like yourself I would have to inspect every inch of that motor to come up with the best conclusion so I know how I would want to put it back together. Can't wait to hear what your conclusion is. Good luck bro.
