Lots of movies overstate it. Yes the French resistance existed but there were a lot of collaborators as well. And I'm talking about every day people, not just the horizontal collaborators. The de gaul mythos of "France was free by the french." Was a decades long delusion. I recommend the Stanford French history guy RU-vid college class. The way he covers both the vichy, collaborators, resistance, and de gaul era... super good

@@claudeyaz I agree. There are lots of movies about what happened to the collaborators at the end of the war, women got their head shaved, people were strung up from light poles. My mother used to tell me about this as a child.

But I believe the German people suffered, and they probably received extra rations for turning in the Jewish neighbors. If you were caught harboring them I am sure that you would’ve been shot. If you want more as good as this I can point you to a film called the contents of my lavatory and it's 5 hours long and the gripping part it when it refuses to flush and the suspense is unbearable.
