Western Sydney International Airport will be Sydney's new international airport, and first curfew-free airport. The airport is expected to open in late-2026. Myself and Paul from ‪@TransportVlog‬ were lucky enough to get a private tour of the new airport in late February! Come along with us as we explore what I believe will be Australia's best airport.

The lack of a rail connection from Glenfield really is a traffic disaster waiting to happen. 2 million people from Goulburn to Liverpool are not going to travel via St Mary's. It means the majority of people will drive. They won't catch a bus. When 'express' buses get stuck in gridlock on the M12 and M7 and people are missing flights, a future government will then have to sort this mess out. And it will be much more expensive doing it later on.
@Creees

Perth's airport station is a few minutes walk from the main terminal too, but it was built there so it can be easily accessed when the rest of the terminals are built (I think Qantas finally agreed to move over a month or two ago) so it makes sense for Sydney to do something similar.

The design is similar to Athens Int’l, which is 21 years old. The main differences are: Athens was built with 2 parallel runways from the beginning, Athens has a satellite terminal. Both airports can easily be expanded which is good. Feels like Sydney is finally joining the 21st century with regards to airport design. I think this new airport will be more popular than what the planners realize.

As Sydney's second airport, and with more space to play with, they could build a more modern airport. Sydney Airport doesn't have a lot of space to play with, unless they filled in more of Botany Bay. That might upset a few people though.

A 2nd international airport for NSW has had a lot of problems in the past. Hexham Swamp west of Newcastle was floated in the 60s, Williamtown was floated as Newcastle airport is expanding into international flights but is shared with the RAAF. Great clip. I'm all jealous now. A few random comments: - You have probably heard that WSI will not have a control tower, but multiple cameras (including in infra red) that will display like a virtual control tower at a facility in Eastern Creek. - It's a little harder to do 'virtual' crash fire rescue, so there appears to be a large concrete pad for the first runway fire station on the western side of the runway, near its centre and beside a big rectangular pond. - The Elizabeth Drive bridge over the M12 and rail underpasses at the northern end of the airport is about to open. - The Elizabeth Drive rail underpass has tons of room for four tracks - That combined with spare space along the eastern side of the W S Airport Metro line through the airport are probably to provide a corridor for a later second line (to/from Westmead?). - Given the passenger flow, cross platform transfers would not be needed within the airport. - As I won't be around by then, I can safely speculate the Airport Line will link to Glenfield, and the later line will run to Narellan and Macarthur (with cross platform exchange before lines split around Bringelly - and possibly with the Airport line splitting to do both destinations initially). - I wonder how transfers between flights at different terminals will be done, once they are constructed - perhaps transfer buses airside (like at some major Australian airports), or a 'people mover' connecting terminals inside their secure areas (like at some major US airports)? - I'm 'sowing seeds' wherever possible that WSI is NOT Sydney's second (or third) airport at all, but is Western Sydney's own international airport. Seperate identity, different market mix, more flexible, cheaper operation and run by more pragmatic locals - It's all the more reason why people in the (more populous and productive) West will rarely want/need to go into dear old Harbour Sydney, except as an occasional tourist - Even Tay Tay preferred going West for her venues and zoo visits. Just saying.
@becsterbrisbane6275

In relation to the transfers, I would say it would operate not dissimilar to Pudong & Hongqiao Airports in Shanghai (both on opposite sides of the city).I believe they have a mix of airlines, but set routes only go to 1 specific airport, and the budget airlines go to Hongqiao.Hongqiao takes less international if I recall my time there, Pudong still doing the heavy lifting for international flights. I reckon Wellcamp Airport here in Brisbane will be similar again, both Badgery's Creek & Wellcamp being a good 2 hours from current airports.

Sorry guys but you forgot to mention no DIRECT connection via metro to Kingsford Smith. Domestic or foreign visitors needing transfer from Western Sydney to Kingsford Smith will need a metro to St Mays, then change, then train to Central station with a change to get to Kingsford Smith. Absolutely ridiculous when 6klm from Western Sydney Airport, a rail line to Leppington was built with direct access to Kingsford Smith and Central WITHOUT THE NEED TO CHANGE TRAINS. Road connection to Kingsford Smith will be a disaster along the M5 that is a parking lot for most of the day. And forget catching a train from Camden or Campbelltown unless you have 3hours to waste of your life. Planning has been -4/10, A second runway and terminal expansion will NEVER happen as in 40 years time it will be 30 - 35Billion to complete as it is next to an active runway. I follow both of you guys channels, and generally love the content, but, and that's a BIG but, this video, i'm sure has been vetted by WSIA for content, and doesn't exploit the weaknesses that will hinder this airport from running smoothly. FFS, 150m to walk from a train to the terminal with baggage before a flight. When heavy machines that were onsite could have done a cut and cover station for 1/3rd the cost and 30m from the terminal. come on now.

I’m not a plane guy but excuse my ignorance I always thought airports had two runways allowing aircraft to take off / land into the wind I thought from the aerial shot I saw one runway and Sharath said he’s was at the western end I’m assuming one east/ west runway ? Can anybody shed light on this ? Thanks

1 runway until it reaches capacity in 2050 then a second will be added
@JaborWithaY
@JaborWithaY 3 месяца назад
Crossing runways are expensive to build and take up an enormous amount of land area, and you can only use one at a time anyway. They generally don't get built unless the airport is expecting a lot of smaller private planes (which can't handle crosswinds very well and don't need a particularly long runway to land on) or the location has highly variable weather conditions that justify it. They're starting at one runway that points northeast (into Sydney's prevailing winds), and will add another one in the same direction when it's justified by the amount of traffic.

Why on earth a heavy rail line was not costructed with a direct connection at St. Mary's one will never know, although we really do, just taking the cheap.option. What a pain, change at St. Mary's for an ST service instead of a seamless trip to town.

International airport with 1 runway? In this day and age, they should have planned 2 runways and expansion option up to 4. One runway would be limiting in the near future.

An amazing piece of Civil construction. Thanks for the lighthearted informative video. But its operation going to effect the whole of the Sydney basin. Aircraft Noise, traffic chaos and pollution. The increase costs from ROI of running this new airport. The new WSI and SYD aircraft movements basically will effect everyone from opening. Plus the many Ground travel and resupply issues assigned to TfNSW well into 2030's.

I remember reading that it was modelled on Incheon Airport and having lived over there and made good use of that train, it’s a good one to compare with. The airport railroad there connects nicely to both terminals via an enclosed connected walkway. Western Sydney doesn’t get as cold as Seoul but at times cold enough!

9:12 "Western Sydney locals don't have to travel an hour and a half..." No.. it is WAY LONGER! From the Sydney CBD each day it takes me 2.5 hours to travel out to the WSA site. But recently I was staying at my mother's place in Liverpool, and it took me more than 3.5 hours to get to work by public transit each day (almost 8 HOURS commute every single day of the week). For my colleagues who drive - just 25 minutes. But we shouldn't be encouraging cars especially when they are forecasting 10 million passengers a year!

Almost 8 HOURS commute every single day of the week? That's a commute. The transport infrastructure is still under construction at WSA. I can' say how well it will work, but hopefully better than 2.5 hrs from the CBD - a Sydney Trains meltdown or pileup on a Motorway not withstanding.
