In episode 2 of this Idaho archery elk hunt, Randy Newberg and Kurt Howard are heading out at first light with a plan to cover country and location bugle to find a bull to go after. They cover a ton of country from sun up to sun down with only hearing a faint response way off in the distance.
The next morning they are woken up by bugling bulls in the dark at camp, interrupting their sleep. So once daybreak comes, they decide to head towards where they think those elk went. After covering country and bugling, they finally glass up a lone elk over on a ridge during the middle of the day.
They decide to let it bed down for the heat of the day before making their way towards him. After a quick nap they slowly get into position to try and do some calling to see if they can call an elk within range. It doesn't pan out, but luckily they get eyes on a mature 6-point bull later in the evening with hopes of calling him closer to Kurt to get a shot.

Just got back from my first elk hunt and stalked a herd for an hour before running out of light like you did. Got within 80 yards of a 6 point and after they moved on ran to the last cover and scraped a tree with a branch and that pissed him off and he started bugeling like crazy but instead of charging me he took his herd to a stand of trees 50 yards up the hill. He wasn’t going to leave his herd to fight a bull he couldn’t see. They get big for a reason. What a blast and I have a lot of learning to do before I get one with my bow

Was in same unit same time. Great hunt. Lots of walking and got into some elk barking and on another day bugling at midday for an hour but rooky move me left the bugle tube in the truck and my party went to eat while I hunted. Maybe back there next year. Hunt smarter and harder.

I am glad to see you guys hunting idaho this states predator dynamics have changed dramatically with the wolves being back. elk have grown far smarter and a lot more paranoid. I honestly feel like certain areas have become almost ungulate wastelands. places i saw large herds regularly have become very small pockets of highly skittish elk. I hope your 2020 archery hunt goes better then the majority of us long time residents this year.

Randy, this old guy has got a screwed up left knee too. Maybe you need to add a little Turkey hunting to your Fall calendar to save on wear and tear. Still open here in Manitoba until 15 October and you might stumble onto an Elk, Boar, Black Bear, or Whitetail at the same time. That's my plan for the last half of this week. I enjoy your videos. Keep at it old guy.

Randy - how about a video describing your off-season and pre-season physical conditioning regime, please. Watching you tackle Idaho mountain terrain in early September is darn impressive to a Michigan flat-lander like me. What does it take to be physically ready for that kind of sustained mobility, especially in your mid-fifties (excuse me for that, but I am in my mid-sixties, wondering if I even have a chance)? Thank you.

I just did a 2.5 week hunt in McCall, ID and I'm 35 from Michigan, I have to say it will depend on what kind of hunting your going to be doing, if your doing a spot/ locate type hunt similar to what Randy's doing in this video, then make sure your pack is loaded with just what you will need and that's it, I found out that 18 lbs of gear/water and the 8.4 lbs (26.4lbs) pack isn't any fun when you NEED to pack out meat from 6 miles from the quad. I shot a large cow at noon on the 11 th my hunting buddy and I quartered her up and hung the meat to so we could come back in that night too pack it all out when it was cooler the day heat was in the upper 80's and I didn't want to have it bake in the pack until we got back to camp. Well long story short my buddy and I needed water so I stayed to finish de-boning a quarter and he had left to get water at 4:30 pm he didn't get back to me until 9:45pm I had wolf's within 200 yards of me as I sat over my meat and burchard cow and then I seen his head lamp coming up from the bottom of the draw I was in and he shot a nice 7x7 bull ( 320ish) and then we decided to pack out what we could of my cow that night. That's when I found out I was in for the worst packing job of my life it was hell over 80 lbs with the never ending "UP" terrain just about killed me. And then we had to do that for 5 straight nights... Also wolf's stink like a road kill on I-69 we got lucky we got the meat up high so they could not get it, but they can clean a carcass clean in a few hours. Good luck to ya, and use that pack up and down any hills you have around you to help get it loaded and adjusted correctly before hand.

The fire kill areas may bring in the grass if the thistles don't take over. Most bugles here locally were answered by wolf howls a few years ago. Most elk are gone and the wolves moved on to better feed.

patrick charles the fire has taken over 80,000 acres of land. Savage Run Wilderness area is about 70% burnt. Platte Wilderness about 50%. The part of the Snowy Range that covers from Hwy 130 on the north to the Colorado border to the south is closed except for emergency responders. Hope we get some rain or snow soon.
@tt600pch
@tt600pch 3 года назад
@@kenrathbone3265 I hope an early winter or cool rainy weather gets to you. The last fire we had near where I live in Western Montana was 27,000 acres in 2017. Not too far away had almost 54,000 acres burned. Lolo National Forest has lost a lot of timber in the last 20 years. Some of it has been salvage logged to help local economy, but a lot went to waste. At least since 2016 it can be salvaged now without appeals that last long enough to give the logs zero value. Timber industry has been battling that since the 80's.

man i spent 8 days in zone 66 this year we hiked farther then we ever have and honestly i saw more bears and wolves then i did elk. i got a few bulls to bugle but they wont budge out of there sanctuary we found elk in the worst possible drainage and they were using it as there little escape corridor from hunters and predators. over all i covered 50 miles on foot at 9200 feet and came home discouraged as hell. hoping rifle sends em lower.
