Strongly believe that you raising your own chickens for eating is firmly in line with - not opposition to - your values. Too many people don't know how their food is raised, and are ready to eat food from factory farms whilst also condemning those that do the dirty work. It's so important that children also have contact with the way that food is made too, so they never take it for granted like some of the people who comment negatively seem to.

If I’m honest, I’m glad the chickens grew up in a place where they were looked after in a loving kind place and then eaten. I don’t think I could do it myself but I know they could have gone to a very bad home where they grow up in a bad environment where they are treated badly because “they are only food”. People seem to forget that the life matters more than the end, we all die in the end but that doesn’t mean we should be cruel because they only going to die.

We had a Vietnamese family move in. My MIL watched them and asked if chicken coops and live chi chicken were permitted in out community. We live in an HOA community. The CC&Rs only permit indoor domestic pets - dogs, cats, fish and birds. I was the Treasurer and was one of the people who had to go down to explain the County also didn't permit chickens. We helped them take down the coop. Fortunately the chickens hadn't been delivered yet.

When I was a kid (ironically, in semi-rural Missouri!) my parents had chickens (unfortunately I can't recall the breeds! We had an asshole rooster named Ike though), ducks (later on, when I was in middle school), goats (at two separate points), horses, miniature donkeys, and, at one point, even turkeys (that ended up flying away). My parents currently live in rural Missouri, and I've genuinely been thinking about surprising my mom with a bunch of chicks of varying breeds in the mail for her birthday (December 11th) once I have the disposable income because of you all

One of my very favorite things about your is when the boys lay down and you put all of those baby checks on them… I love listening to their little giggles as the chicks pick up their little arms in on her face and their feet poke through their shirt and poke their tummies, and they giggle… It’s just the best time of innocence with them and the chicks… The chicks are unsure of their footing because you’re used to you stepping only on flat surfaces, and now they’re having to learn to balance themselves on a slightly curved surface. It’s just one of my very favorite things I’ve ever seen on your videos. Children are so true true situation. General responses are real and genuine, and I love their little voices, and I love their choice of words. And this time I like that they put protection on their eyes which I don’t know if that was their idea or the parents, but pretty smart, whoever’s idea was.!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ I show love a day the chicks arrive, because it’s also the day the giggles arrive😊😊😮😊😊😮😊😊😮

PS 2 - one more question about the baby chicks you get in the mail or even the ones you had joke. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you dip their beaks in water when you put them in their new cage after the incubator. Do you guys do that? Do you believe it’s necessary as so many other farmers do this process… Not only dipping your boots in the water, so they know what it is and where it is but then also the food. I think they naturally can smell the food and probably even the water but I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts if you care to show that on a different video. My last question is and I searched all of your videos that are the most recent and I cannot find it but you were reading mail with your children at the end of the video. By the way, I love it that your children say thank you and then they pronounce the names of the people that have sent them a drawing, a card, even a gift, and they do this for every single one. Even your youngest son is making an effort to pronounce their names, and he gets pretty close on the life of them. I am so proud of you guys as parents, to teach them the importance of not only saying thank you, but addressing the individual who has mail them something. I know Childrens and other farm families who I will not name but it drives oh show me your me nuts and they are three times the age of your children and they have to be told to say thank you after they have been given expensive gifts… Especially one of their children and I am so upset every time I see this because our family we were 12 children and not very rich or even middle-class, but there were a lot of farmers in the same condition we were, but it was just multiplied because we were larger families. But my mom and dad taught us rules and manners and we weren’t allowed to even use our play with a gift until we sit down and write a thank you, once we were of age & able to do that ❣️❣️ but two of their children on this one, RU-vid farm are clearly older than your children and every time they videotape the parents have to tell them to say thank you, more so one of them than the other… The older one is pretty good about it and I don’t expect them to not say it every single time because I get excited. But they definitely never say the names of the people… When they’re saying thank you. They might say it at the beginning if they read the card but definitely not after they open a gift and I’m talking hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of gifts. Your children are so grateful for the drawings they get and I want to encourage you to put them in acid free portfolios or notebook pages or sleeves that are see-through plastic but still acid free so they don’t fade over the years. Your children will love having those drawings for years. I have a drawing that my daughter did have a little horse and she was maybe 2 1/2 to 3 years old and I love that little drawing. I was always going to make a piece of jewelry out of it but life gets busy and money gets shorter. It seems especially now that I have 11 Grandchildren & medical issues. I am an artist, and I value every drawing I receive from my grandchildren. I have a bulletin board in my kitchen where I keep them and I also date them. And eventually I protect them in the kind of books I’ve just described. I did not know about acid free, pages in paper, notebooks etc. until I took a photography class about 10 years ago when I was going back to college for the third time for a different degree And for extra credit I took this photography class and I learned so much but that was huge for me because I have thousands and thousands of photos and I noticed the Polaroid photos of the 1970s and early mid 60s were😂😢.. and they were of my firstborn child. It makes me very sad especially as one of them is his baptism and they are also with his father who passed away six years ago, so I try to tell people that I can’t get those photos in a book and it doesn’t have to be perfect… It’s something you can involve your children in at least organize helping you organize between us for children and make piles and that sorting takes a lot of time so if they can help you just with that and of course you have to teach them to catch them on the corners of the edges, and I know your daughter would want to help but you could just give her a box and the boys can throw her pictures in her box and she could just hold onto the box. anyway, I try not to give out advice unless I think it’s good and important, but never judge mental. You guys are such wonderful adults and incredible family and you are my top family RU-vid that I watch.!!! thank you. God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving. Oh! I almost forgot what it was I was looking for, and I need your help with it. When you were doing the mail, you got something from a lady I believe her name is Joanne Rose and she was from Texas? And she sent you five cute little miniature funnels?? And would you put water in them and then you stick them in the ground so that the bees and hummingbirds can get water. I have a sister that I spoke to you about before that has wonderful . bees bird & lots of hummingbirds because she plants certain flowers, and plants that both of them like for the pollination process as well as food source. I would like to buy these and send them to her, but I could not find them in your notes at the end of your video. In fact, when I went to find the video, I couldn’t find it but it is the one were you doing mail with the children and it is wonderful all the wonderful drawings that you get from other children but also that your children tell them thank you. Also, somebody made you a stuffed animal that is I believe a chicken… And I know you’ll have the children share it but your youngest son said it was he has it and he grabbed it for anybody else good. That just made me giggle. I’m sure the lady would make more for your children especially if she watched a video and saw how much they loved it. I’m in adult and I thought it was adorable. If you could send me your information to my email, I would so appreciate it because anything that has to do with her animals on her farm is a great gift and Christmas is around the corner. God bless you all.😇♥️🌈

So I watch this again because I was looking for the name of some thing that you showed in your mail, but this is not a video for Mail… But it reminded me of a couple things that I did what I say: 1) and I don’t think it’s this video that you showed one duck eggs but, I want to tell you that one year when I was still living on the farm with my parents when I was about 14 years of age, my mom came in from the outdoors where she was hanging laundry, and she said to us children that were doing chores inside, “I just saw the strangest thing” …She went on to say, “ a pair of wood ducks, just flew up in the maple tree by the garden, and within 20 feet of where I was standing… I’m just getting on the footage ~ I am terrible at guessing distance ~ she didn’t told us that we were not to go anywhere near that tree. If we wanted to look out her bedroom window, though, we would most likely seat them as one of them would fly in and out. She assumed they were building a nest. Well, this process went on for days of a wood duck, leaving and coming back in with nesting material. At one time there had been a small bee hive in the tree, and my father had to take a large branch with a cloth tied onto the end, and gasoline poured onto cloth, and then he systematically, began eliminating Bees and their hive… no typically you don’t do that you want to preserve the bees, but in this case, they were destroying the tree, because the beehive had gotten so large. The upper branches on one side were dying. He thought that this was a strange situation, but nonetheless, he had to take care of it. Probably three years earlier in a different tree, they harvested the honey, even though it was dark. Such a mess because we did not have all of the equipment that is now available to people And so my mother used her canning supplies and everything was so sticky and very hard to clean so we ended up just having to boil water and soak everything in an initial boiling hot bath with soap, and then wash it again and then sometimes a third time before everything came off… And I decided in there, I was never going to grow bees… but I do have a sister that is like your family, she has multiple bees, and she watches your RU-vid. She’s amazed at the round beehive you have, and she’s going to look into that for next spring. She also loves your Lego hive, but recognizes that that was not only a large expense but a lot of time to build it, and said she thought your boys and you did a marvelous job in building the Lego hive. I have learned a lot from her and from you guys, and I truly do have the upmost respect for the work you do and the fact that you’re willing to tackle the mesh that comes with harvesting honey. know if they could just invent an outdoor dishwasher so you could put everything in that outdoor dishwasher and never have to bring the mess into your home that would be great. I do know they have a portable dishwasher but I don’t know if that’s an electric one or not. Anyway, I digress! Back to the wood ducks that were in our tree. It wasn’t long before they had stopped bringing nesting material into the tree, and you began to see them less and less, but you could hear them talking to each other more and more😄❣️ my mother told us that she was certain that the female was laying eggs at this point. We didn’t have time to sit and watch the birds too much because we were very busy on the farm… There were 12 children in our home, and we had about five or six large gardens, plus my father had a garden on the hill and we only worked in it when he was with us. There was definitely trimming it always needed to be done after he mowed,… Many animals to feed and water, which the water was hand carried in buckets from the hydrant between the barn in the house and it was no short walk either direction but we did not have garden hoses back then for the longest time. And the list goes on and on of work that had to be done by us girls inside the house and outside but the boys, only worked outside. I never thought this was for fair, but, we didn’t get a Vote!!😂 It wasn’t long before we began to hear little baby duck sounds, and we were really excited. That’s what our mother told us that eventually when it came time for them to get out of that tree, since the nurse was down, way down in the trunk, the baby ducks would have to learn to fly up to the top. She then told us that the parents, one of them, or both of them would be up at the top, waiting for the baby ducks because they would sit there and talk to them, encouraging them to fly up and follow their voice, and when they reach the top, the parents pushed them off the tree!!!!!!!😢🤣🤣😂😂 what?!?!? This seemed so cruel to me, however, once again, our mother explained that they had plenty of time to flap their wings between the top of the tree and the ground, and if they didn’t flap their wings, they weren’t gonna learn to fly, and the consequences were not good either way. If they hit the ground, then the wood that parents had to sit up there and keep talking to them to get them to fly a upwards, which was a lot harder than downwards !?!? I did see one baby duck hit the ground and it was horrible and a couple of us were crying about it, and my mother would not tolerate crying… So she told us to get busy with our work and forget the ducks and Shirley, by the time we were done with her chores, the baby duck would already be gone either by flying to it’s parents or by a cat getting the baby duck while on the ground!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 #2 ~ this is a question: or a suggestion actually regarding your daughter, wanting to hold the baby chicks and other little tiny animals, and she doesn’t realize her old strength in her hand… We had the same problem with my daughter, and she had two older brothers, so she thought she had to be able to do everything they did. on a day that she was in a good mood and had had food and it wasn’t time for a nap, we sat on the porch swing and we had a conversation about who is the biggest and who was the strongest in our family and did she think she was the strongest daddy which it was funny she did but then we talked about what daddy could do with his strength and could she do it and then she realize no I can’t so she realize she wasn’t as strong as daddy. We didn’t talk about her brothers and were they stronger than her and what could they do that she couldn’t. Then I said I had a gift for her so she got excited and forgot all about being strong but I had put that in her mind, and when she opened it, it was a little purse, and the handle could come off and I wanted it to be for a simple purpose and that was... putting the baby chicks in and other little baby animals so that she would be holding the purse and not squeezing them. This was monumental in solving that problem. She loved her little purse as I knew she would and she could not squeeze the animal inside unless, of course she put a lot of effort in it, and then we would be taking the purse which she would not want it, and we talked about that. But the other thing came of giving her the purse that I had not counted on, she got to carry the baby animals to their new pen… On Mail day, & even when we moved him to the next stage of home/building. She felt so proud that she could move the little baby ones and not just big chickens. You might give that a try and see what you think. You may have a purse already like this or a Easter basket or something that you could use that would eliminate squeezing the animals… Sink problem if you have baby kittens there’s a lot a little tiny, baby animals that you guys get on your farm and you wouldn’t have to worry about her hurting them nearly as much. It’s a great teaching aid. I did not realize how much Happy 🎉 Birthday to your precious girl who is learning so much about life and loving the animals because of her parents and brothers. I’m so proud of you guys for the family you have in your great big smiles, but also for all your teaching them that fall last time all of their life😄❣️❣️❣️❣️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Try and transfer chiks to foster moms at night. They wake up and accept them better.
