We finally got Starlink from SpaceX! In this video, we show you the initial setup of all the equipment and give you our review of using Starlink so far.
With wildfires hitting Europe, it was only a matter of time before they reached us in Bulgaria. Taking the experience as a lesson learnt, we discuss our future plans and our next steps towards living off grid.
We're Phil and Kayleigh, a husband and wife living in rural Bulgaria with our two children, Alex and Ember. It's always been our dream to live a more self-sustainable life off grid. So, we've sold all our belongings, escaped the rental rat race and bought a plot of land. Complete with a derelict house and 3 barns, we hope to create our new life mortgage free. We've faced lots of hurdles already, so hang on tight as we show you highs and lows of moving abroad and starting again.

Bulgaria has a very good and professional fire service. Even countries like Israel are considering introducing a system similar to the Bulgarian one. Every year, Bulgarian firefighters help their colleagues in Greece, Turkey and Macedonia. This year was a total anomaly. In Bulgaria, it is generally not so hot. Neighboring Greece found itself in a catastrophic situation with many human casualties from the fires this year.

To prevent our home becoming a fire ball in extreme heat. We always make sure that the grass is kept short in spring time, and maintained that way. we also have a wall around the property [but tin fence would do the same job] and with a house roof consisting of clay tiles it makes the risks less, we ensure the barns have air flow to prevent stored hay becoming combustible and only bale hay up to 20% moisture to reduce the potential for hay bales spontaneously combusting. We also do not keeping scrap materials lying around on the land that could start a fire, but as with all fires it is never guaranteed what the outcome will be, so making sure you have an escape plan in place is important.
@OffGridWithTheUdens

Brilliant suggestions. The escape plan is one we have put into place and as time goes on we hope to have the land maintained better too 👍

The pacing of the video is really good. The whole wildfire (prob human induced) had me hooked good. I am really glad everything turned out fine. I am really glad you are sharing your experience, hope to see you progress with good tempo and turn the old house into a home. Overall the video was top-notch! Great work! Also, depending on the quality and the signal coverage in your area, you can check if there are any alternatives for an internet connection in the future. The network providers have "Net Boxes", which basically work off of the existing 4G+ network (so like your phone). They come with a router and a sim card. If you have a good signal coverage on your phone, and you are okay with the network speeds, I think it's worthed, since it's like 10-15GBP (25-30 levs) for the unit per month. My grandma lives in a rural area and she is using a "Net Box" and it has worked flawlessly for the past 6+ months. Best of luck Udens!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video I have to say I work hard to try and make it entertaining, enjoyable and watchable. I will do my best to keep it going and really appreciate the positive feedback. Yes we checked out most of the alternatives before signing up for the Starlink. Speed and a reliable connection seemed to be the two main issues in our area. Kayleigh does a lot of video calls for work so speed and reliability were top of the list. Thanks again for the Super and the comment we all really appreciate it!☺️

Found your channel and liking the videos. We live in Oklahoma and wildfires have come close to our home several times . We put in an above ground swimming pool with a petrol water pump near by. Hi, firstly like to say that I am enjoying your videos. The fire must have been very stressful, we had a house fire in the village where I am a couple of years ago when it had been very dry, there was no water on in the village to dowse and fight it. The lesson I have drawn from this is to harvest rainwater and store it both for emergencies such as that, save a scarce natural resource, use for my domestic use (with a triple action filter system) and to use on my vegetable plots when i get them sorted. I am at the beginning of my jorney over there and hope to be moving over full time this year at some point. I will be installing two 5000 litre tanks ASAP to collect the water. All the best going forward and keep posting. Howie.😎

Oh from personal experience cut some cement board to cover the windows . My had a small start in a field next to her house . As the fire got bit more intense the heat coming through the glass doors set the neighbors kitchen curtains on fire. . Luck was with the a firefighter saw and got them put out . Also maybe build a dirt berm around the camper . I am not sure how big around it should be .

Coming from the western US, don’t worry about the forest fires, they are natural. Watch how that burnt part rebounds. Personally though, I would absolutely get rid of all that tall grass on your property. You camper beside that tall dry grass would be gone in a matter of minutes. Need to think about and research control burns for the dry season, that is what we do in fire country. Happens every year for thousands of years. I’d also consider a 3000 gallon tank of water on your property to start with and a good pump and hose. Looks like you could set it up on the higher ground and gravity feed it down the property.
@OffGridWithTheUdens
@OffGridWithTheUdens Год назад
Hi thanks for the comment, yes we were surprised to see some green shoots already popping through the ashes when we went out. The grass is on my list of jobs to do but the heat has been so crazy we haven't been able to be on the strimmer for more than an hour or two. I'm looking into exactly as you say a large water tank with a pump up on the land but it's very cost prohibitive. I'm thinking about a basic setup of a few IBC's and a pump to get us out of trouble for now and revisiting it in the future. Cheers.

I follow a lot of youtubers in Portugal who have also been dealing with wild fires. difference there is that they have the Bomberos (voluntary fire fighters who use aeroplanes to drop water as well as on the ground) and an app on their phones where all fires are shown. You need permission via the app to burn your own 'rubbish' so that it's known where permitted fires are. Legally they are not permitted to use any kind of power tools due to risk of spark, and forests are also out of bounds due to risk of hot vehicles causing a fire in the dry grass. Pieces of glass in the soil can start a fire if sun hits it just right. Many prepare their land before the fire season, but cutting down all their long grass/hay, clearing old wood and having wide 'fire breaks'. One home steader has his own home made fire engine (water in a large tank on back of a trailer and rigged up to a pump and hose) others have sprinkler systems on their land and minimal if any trees/wood/bushes near their houses.
@OffGridWithTheUdens
@OffGridWithTheUdens Год назад
I think we also follow a few of the same channels. I to have been debating having a fire tender type of trailer that I can put on the back of the land rover to help in these situations big water tank and a pump and hose. We're also planning to have irrigation rigged up for next summer so hopefully we can keep a nice green luscious border around the land and the caravan etc. I wish we had an app like that here it's a brilliant idea. I wouldn't mind becoming a volunteer firefighter here but I need to get much better with the language first.

Unfortunately fires here usually (ok, rather often) start because of people's carelessness and stupidity: thrown away cigarettes still lit, dumped broken bottles working as a magnifying glass, etc. I take my dog for a walk a bit far from the village and this summer I had to run back three times because of the clouds of smoke inside the village. Once I came back to find smoke in my garden, because sheppard kids decided to squat half ruined neighbouring building and make fire inside it to cook smth. Our friend's grandson is a firefighter and he said that in summer they don't work by shifts, both teams work together, and they almost don't have days off. I guess what you could do is to plough your garden along the perimeter, minimum a meter and avoid planting anything in that zone.
@moetocafe
@moetocafe Год назад
a meter? To really hope to stop fire, you need at the very least 5 meters or more (and strong wind can still easily transfer the fire on to the other side)
@victoriabezfamilii965
@victoriabezfamilii965 Год назад
@@moetocafe did I mention anywhere 'to stop fire' ? The more the better of course but it's a lot of unused land, they are going to stream grass anyway I guess, creating some sort of gap between neighbouring vegetation and own vegetation should give a bit more time to tackle the fire.
@OffGridWithTheUdens
@OffGridWithTheUdens Год назад
Thanks for the comment. We had 2 more fires on the outskirts of the village on the side of the road. Obviously thrown cigarettes out of a car window....it's terrible. I'd like to install irrigation along the boundaries of the land, id rather it lush and green to stop fire than ploughed. But I'm not sure it would work. We definitely are getting some plans in place to help reduce the damage though.
@moetocafe
@moetocafe Год назад
@@OffGridWithTheUdens you can't hope for the grass to be always green, unless you take some special care. Normally grass will turn dry yellow at some point and it is usually exactly near the middle or end of the summer, when everything is dry and waiting for disaster to happen. You may try some sort of banked soil or a solid fence, but from what I've seen on the news about big fires - fences and walls are not very effective.

Thanks for the comment, yes very much so, and it highlights just how careful you have to be and how quickly things can change. Yes we will have to import and register it here but a lot of people are having serious trouble with the process when you have a UK right-hand drive car. So we will run the UK plates for a bit longer until we can work out the best plan of action.... Part of me is thinking about selling it back in the UK and buying something else out here just to save the hassle and expense! We'll cover this in a future video for sure. Cheers.

Against wildfire only thing u could do is get rid of the burnable stuf, gras etc that dries out anyway, ask a farmer with tractor to plow the land clean, and install sprinkler systems arround the important building that u can leave on while u evac, seen a guy in US do this in area with wildfires and his house was the only one stil standing. Ohh and ofcourse avoid wooden structures iff u can iff there is enough stone in the regio to be found i would use that as stone wont burn down easy. and iff u make sure the sprinkler system atleast wettens 10 meter arround the structure it should be fine as the fire can never reach it.

These barns are usually not so solid and may take a lot more efforts to prepare it for winter. Isn't it better to renovate a room or two in the house instead?
@OffGridWithTheUdens
@OffGridWithTheUdens Год назад
You're right - it's certainly a big project! We do not have a hidden bank of savings so each project we complete will take time and be completed in phases. We do not expect to be leaving the caravan any time soon and the barn will certainly not be ready by winter! We want to do things properly and won't be rushing or bodging. 👍❤️ P S the house isn't actually structurally safe at the moment 🫣

Thank you. I'm researching the prospect of potentially moving out there in the next year or so and if I need to work, I'd like to explore sole online working. I've recently adopted 2 rescue dogs from Sliven.

Directly from Starlink 👍😊 it took less than two weeks to get to us and the tracking was accurate too.

Scary thing! I hope no people were hurt from the village?

Yes super scary and not something we were used to dealing with in the UK. Everyone escaped unharmed just extremely hot and exhausted from fighting it in the crazy heat we've had. Thanks for the comment.

Hi 👋 Prices for what exactly? The Starlink prices vary greatly according to your location, which is why we refer to their website for the most up to date and accurate pricing 😊 We have a video soon with detailed costs of our solar etc if that's what you were referring to?

@@williambackhouse9947 that's not the case if you have a Bulgarian residency card. Would recommend taking a look online - up to date information 🙂
