Dr. T, Thanks for sharing this amazing adventure. It actually is an eye opener as we all pretty much take things for granted. Always be prepared as you suggested because the weather patterns have changed. A blanket would have made a difference if you did get stranded over night. Beautiful landscape. 🇺🇸 👏😁
Taking your son on adventures is the best of life. I miss my son. Enjoy while you have him home. He will be on his own before you are ready. Does not last long enough. I could have spent three more years with my son at 12.
Just a thought get a land anchor. It can save your but when there are no trees or large rocks. Saved my bacon when I had my 2 boys hunting. Don't go cheap on it.
Get yourself a quality snatch block and recovery strap with a shackle. A snatch block will nearly double your winch capacity and reduce the stress on your winch line.
4 wheel drive does not make you invincible, sometimes even a winch is not enough (if you cannot reach a big tree to anchor to)! I would love to detect those old dredge tailings! Satellite phone would be great to have too (besides the water, blankets, food, flares, fire-starter, extra fuel, and firearms).
I always pack 2-3 weeks of food -xtra 10 gal fuel. Xtra 5-8 gal water & Water filter. High/lift. Tire pump/ Shovel/pick axe/chain/cable or strap/Bow saw or chain saw/axe/Hatchet -and Standard expedition gear/weapons and so on. Don’t have a winch on my 82’ Toyota 4x4 long bed. Truck is outfitted with a Custom Crafted Ammo Can wood stove piped out the side camper shell window-via Custom stove stack. Literally a 5 gal bucket of prepared wood lasts for days-and the 7’ bed is comfy for a 6’2” old guy-this set up stays on my truck starting late sept-Hunting season -til May! I just took it off-but Damn😮 I’m planning a boonie trip this weekend-and just may re-install it-this is a May to remember!!! Cool Vid-glad you got outta there-- I’ve been stuck few times in my 62’ years-good test of skills and memories you’ll think back on🇺🇸
I live in the PNW. I always carry a chain saw or axe in my vehicle when I go into the woods; and tire chains. They work in mud besides snow. Plus a blanket and food & water. I did have 2 flat tires on my last trip into the woods. I put a spare on and drove 15 miles on a flat. Then I could get phone service & get a tow co. Spare gas too! Never hood a winch to a dead tree. One chap pulled a tree over on his jeep here, and it killed him. If you carry a long fluke boat anchor you can dig it into the dirt or sand and it can really help you get unstuck. I'd prefer to carry Marsden Mat, but it is not findable any more here.
One of my nissan trucks came with a wench. Luckily i never had too use it. But what a nice add on too buying a vehicle. Glad you guys got out of that mess you were in. Always remind yourself your with your only child Brandon. Glad you were prepared.
Great adventure for you two. If your gonna play in the woods by yourself you got to be prepared to stay a couple extra days. Couple things I would carry , Snatch blocks, 6' pry bar & three pound sledge hammer ( sometimes there nothing to hook to) . One or two four inch 30 ' truck load straps , you can tie then in knots ,loop em and cut them with a(sharp knife) they got 70 footer's too I've had mine for 10+ years and used it more then anything else. I also have a sheetrock saw under my seat it makes quick work on smaller trees and Jo pokers and fire wood . And for everyone driving in cold weather carry a candle or two in your glove box it will keep your cabin warmer an give you light so you don't waste your gas and batteries. Have fun but be prepared ! HH
Yikes. Glad you come prepared. As a frequent explorer of the outback I too am usually over prepared. Keep up the great videos. Would love to host an adventure for the Dirt Fishermen. :) PM sent...
I've been the first one in there many times wait till the first week in June at least don't go any more broke my back haven't been in since 2015 would love to go in with you and show you where to dig I've got some beauty,s
Back in the old day when we were out in the snow we took four sets of chains and put them on the Jeep front and back practically turned it into a tank with the winch
Also carry extra line some places no tree's just sand or hard stone you did right snow chains for all four wheels help me once plus come along's ground stakes main Keep Calm hey it worked out !!!; )
