The book signing at the Cherokee County Historical Museum was a huge success. We enjoyed talking to everyone that came out to see us. I wish Jim could have been with us, but he wasn't able to make it. We will both be at the next book event-see details below.
Tuesday, August 22 Jim and I both will be at the Marianna Black Library in Bryson City, NC from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. This is a drop-in event so we won’t be doing a presentation but will be glad to sign your cookbook and answer any questions you might have.

"Slates" is the term for the things schoolchildren wrote on with chalk. The one exhibit reminded me that most people under 40 have never literally dialed a phone. Looking forward to more appearances from Billy Ray -- it's good to know a few of the old Carnegie Libraries still stand.

My birth home of Belton Mo. is where Dale Carnegie (How to Win Friends and Influence People) is buried. Dale was born to the Carnagy family. He was sensitive about not being related to Andrew, so when he moved to New York, Dale began spelling his last name Carnegie. His own accomplishments, coming from nothing to become quite a lot, should have been enough! Glad your book continues to have interest and sell well. It is a treasure.

It looks like a very successful book signing! I love my book. There are so many more recipes that I want to try. When you mentioned the old photos, it made me think of my Dad’s yearbook. My husbands uncle was in his class at Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Years later, that same Uncle’s son was in my junior high yearbook, also in Tulsa. My husband and I met years later after my family moved. I thinks it’s interesting how our lives are connected. It seems likely that any of the people in the museum photos could have known your family.

That little phone booth reminds me of my childhood. On the rare Saturday that my Daddy was off work, he would run my brother and I on errands our Momma had given him. After the errands, he would stop at local Watering Hole. He would get a cold beer at the bar and set my brother and I down at a little table with a little bottle of Coca Cola and a bag of barbecue potato chips to share. There was an old timely phone booth right there by us and we would play in that thing like crazy! In our imagination we were calling every person we knew! Sometimes, we wished Daddy would have another cold beer,just so we could keep playing in that old timely phone ! Thanks for bringing back those sweet memories!

My mom donated her grandparents wooden box wall phone to her local museum where she knew it would be appreciated and cared for. She loved her grandparents especially her grandpa "Pa". Tipper - I just read your blog for today about the table in the museum with all the signatures. So loved that! What a beautiful way to remember each one for future generations of those whose names are inscribed. I have heard of similar done within large families, signing a door or door frame, or preferably a kitchen table, or even a cloth tablecloth, where family would gather for special holiday meals, then the table would be past down, becoming a part of a visual memory.
@janetsmart-countryliving1059
Glad you had a great book signing. I love museums! I once wished that we could turn our little building into a place to put all my old stuff- kinda like my own little museum.
@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288
Enjoyed the tidbit about the Carnegie library. Even though the New York Public Library is an expansive system throughout the Bronx and Manhattan, there are within that system some of the original Carnegie libraries. It's wonderful to step inside a neighborhood branch library that has kept its original architecture even as other improvements, like elevators for disability access, have been added. I hope your town still actively uses their public library in addition to enjoying their museum. Loved the phone booth too! The college library at Fordham University had a phone booth that I would use when I was beyond stressed out working on a paper. I would slide in there and call a friend as a calming study break. There was a little seat inside attached to the corner. Honestly, it felt cozy and safe! And it was great to take a study break without leaving the library, because when you are stressed like that over university coursework, you feel certain you will leave the library, leave the paper, leave the campus, and never come back! Lol. I graduated with two dean's list pins, so that cozy little phone booth really helped! Just saying, many old ideas had strong foundations. 🗽

I am so glad you highlighted the museum in Cherokee Co. That museum is full of wonderful curiosities. For me, I remember the display of the moon-eyed people, a Cherokee legend. It has been a while, so don't know if it is still there. My Granny was born in Andrews and lived to be 105. Her grandmother was born in the southern Appalachians in 1823 and lived to be 112. She was famous for having had to kill a bear--i can find no record of it, but in the photos I have of her, she wears a cape around her shoulders made of animals skin. (They were Consenes/Quintons/Childers/Suttons). I would LOVE to hear more of the history from some of the historians and genealogists around the region!!

Fortunately there are several families that give away millions - maybe billions - Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (not sure if it’s still called that) and Warren Buffet has vowed to give away the majority of his wealth before he dies. They don’t always put their name out there, but there are some very generous people giving away a lot of money today. Olivia Newton John built an entire cancer hospital in her home country of Australia before she died.

Thanks Team, there is an old song, with words "Don't let em tear the little brown building down" please keep it, history is so important. I worked for many years with older Buildings, some nearly 200 years old. It always annoyed me when surveyors complained that the Building(s) did not meet current code. Memories with the phone, we had the exact style in the workers cottage where my Dad worked as a station (ranch) hand. Just crank the handle and ask the operator to connect you. The only problem, as a party line, all could listen in. The School room, I remember the use of the slate board and slate pencil :). Some nice guns there, been 40 years since I fired one.

Loved the video and the history shared. You are so kind to feature a young RU-vidr on your channel. Keep celebrating our heritage.

I'm so glad they didn't tear down the old library building. Stillwater, Oklahoma had a Carnegie Library and it was wonderful. I don't know if its still there, but I used to take our son there when he was little. I much, much prefer libraries in old traditional buildings. The new "improved" replacements are so cold and sterile.
