Hey Matt my wife and I raise chickens too and we had an identical problem with our chickens a few months ago. What we discovered is the Leghorn chicken (white one) was aggressive towards the others and actually killed one of ours before we figured it out. I would recommend pulling the white chicken out and see if things improve. That's what we did with it's and all our chickens are back to normal. Plus I know how much you dislike that white chicken. We laugh everytime you talk about it because we feel the same about our white chicken. Hope that helps
Charles Mesnard good call. It's all about the breed. I favor the Astralorp, Orpington & Wyandotte. So many breeds with mild temperaments, why bother with the others. Ok, there are good reasons why, but not in my backyard. (:
This is pretty similar to what we had happen, but the only difference was we caught it happening on a camera we had setup so we had fried chicken one of the following nights.
The plucked feathers are the chickens going through what's called a "pecking order". It's normal with female hens. There's no way to make them stop. It's not bugs. If you want to treat the gorund or the dirt, use diatomaceous earth. The size of the opening for the nesting boxes are fine. The chickens don't really care. Hope this info helps. Happy chicken farming!
Your chickens are bullying each other. Ideally, you'd have a rooster in the flock to maintain dominance, but without one, the hens are fighting to be the top dog, so to speak. The white one is probably the meanest one and no one is messing with her.
I would go with option 2; big old school muscle car needs a big old school engine. Regardless of whether you decide on a 454 or 502 big block, I would still super charge it.
The chickens are just pecking themselves or each other. It’s definitely not mites because if it was there would be feathers missing from all over their bodies. My chickens have the same patch of feathers missing from their backs except for one so my best bet is that in every flock there is a dominate chicken that pecks the other. Yours unsurprising is probably white chicken. Also the nesting box opening is plenty big enough. If it wasn’t they wouldn’t be laying in it.
HELPFUL COMMENT! Chickens are attracted to red/pink. They attack at pink or red so the other ones are probably pulling out their feathers and attacking. Tsc sells a purple cream (chickens can't see purple) that will make it so the chickens won't attack. Also, don't let the girls go in the coop with red or pink nail polish. I've done this in my sandals and the chickens attack at them!! Hope this helps!!!!! Sincerely, a chicken expert😊😊😊
Oh and the boxes are plenty big enough. Buy eggs at the store and put them in there. It should help trick them into laying. Grew up with 70 chickens at a time. Always worked!
Jeah When I pick my eggs I always leave one because if I don't do that my chickens think their laying place got atacked or something like that and they will find new place to lay eggs but the problem is that they will hide egs in bales and I couldn't never find them.
Jessica Dean i think sometimes its natural to have chickens have a featherloss.. But you are the expert here :p Btw im an expert chicken catcher... the best way to catch them is go from the top not from the sides :p...
call the roadkill guys and colab an engineswap/supercharging! Have finnigan and freiberger shoot the 500 magnum once each on demoranch for everything that goes wrong :)
Hey Matt what your seeing in the chicken more than likely is just them picking on each other and pulling feathers. This is frequently called the pecking order. If you still have concerns about mites the two things you can look for are: 1) mite eggs. They look like very small white specks they will be near the comb and under the waddles. 2) the more direct options would be to look for the mites themselves. The will be small orange specs crawling around the skin near the base of the feather. Most commonly you'll see them under the wings or almost always near the vent. If you have them my personal method to treat them is a good garden/poultry mite dust on the birds, coating there legs in vegetable oil, and coating the comb and waddles in coconut oil. Also never hurts to sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the coop.
Matt, make sure the white chicken is a hen, not a rooster. My dad has had chickens for around five years or so, and whenever he gets a rooster by mistake, it will try to mount the hens, causing the hens feathers to get ripped out in that same spot on all of them. The white one could be a hen and just asserting its dominance by mounting the others as well. Just some food for thought.
Chickens dominate the others by pecking and jumping on each other's backs like a rooster would during mating. Most likely white chicken is the culprit. There's always that "one" in a group of hens...kind of like women. It's a pecking order. I'd put out grit or crushed oyster shells and more roaming/scavenging time and space for bugs. Feather loss would be sporadic all over their bodies if it were mites.
Nick Crawford if they are molting it wouldn't just be their butts missing feathers. Their chests and upper necks would be bare or patchy as well. They also wouldn't be scratched up. They're doing it to each other to establish a line of dominance. The more torn up you are, the weaker and bottom of the ladder you are. White chicken is queen since she's the least messed up.
If I'm not mistaken, in your coop, you built two perches one in front of the other. In my experience, the ones in the back will peck at the ones in the front. Chickens will not normally face each other when sleeping. Perches need to be separated.
Scott Wiggins I'm a bit of a pureist about numbers matching or at least engine matching cars. I'm sure he wasn't looking for a Skylark GS but thought it was an SS regardless No stroked 350 is "muscle". So many of my friends have come to me with ""muscle cars" to tune the old fashioned way which are just rebadged cars. Like his. Rebadging cars is a scam. It should be illegal. I hope you find your dream car one day, and love it. Just don't make it a fake. March 1 tomorrow. Please register for marrow donation as per Demolition Ranch That's right, same guy looks after abandoned pets (vetranch) this, and my favorite guns. Bethematch
It's as though I want my engine and chassis numbers to match. Yet my DNA to be anywhere.(bethematch) I will fight for your right to do up any old car... until the wrong badges are on it lol. Keep loving almost everything mate. I'm close enough to Canada to say eh instead of thank you. So thank you, eh.
as the owner of a 70 monte carlo SS as my first car and one of the best , the true ss came with 454 engine ,bucket seats and floor shift , but that is still a good looking car and wish I had mine back
Matt, Option 2. do what I was going to do. Drop a 454 in it, call the car "Casull" but keep it naturally aspirated and tune the carb right. If anyone doesn't know what the 454 Casull is...look it up
MATT CHICKENS you have an over aggressive chicken usually the one that has the feathers still is the aggressor but most of the time there is more than one picking on the other chickens. Sometimes if you remove the aggressive chicken it will stop but sometimes another one just take that place. it's probably the white one
It looks like Matt's actually worked his arse off to attain his dream life. I know a lot of people who wish for his life- but only a mere fraction of them are willing to put in the work to achieve that dream life status.. . myself included, lol. I swear, Matt's got more energy than any 5 kids I know COMBINED!!! It's not hard to see what drew Mere to him
There are multiple options stress (seems unlikely), molting (unlikely pattern), mites, lice and/or feather peaking (because of boredom or deficiency in the food). Feathers and eggs are predominantly protein. Adult chickens require diets between 15-17% protein depending on which chicken resource you rely upon. Protein deficiency's are not uncommon, bugs can help, come breeders will supplement with cat food. Also grits are very important so they get enough calcium. Chicken can get bored very easily, try to make food harder to get, sprinkle in in between pine cones or hang a piece of lettuce high up, so it is hard for them to reach, make a treat ball etc. Chickens love the color red. Chickens love to peck at red things including blood. Chickens can become cannibals if left to their own devices. Blu-kote can help with that!! You are treating for mites and lice so that is good. Consider giving your ladies a dust bath, it help them clean there feathers and eradicate mites and lice. They love it, of course it does have to stay dry. Good luck, hope this helps :)
LS7 swap the monte carlo, easily equal in rumble to the big block, 500+ horses stock and reliable as all hell. Plus they recently dropped the crate price to under 15...
454 with 12:1 compression, running the fitech 600hp self running TBI, long tube headers, X pipe, flowmaster super 44 mufflers, eddlebrock dual plane intake manifold, and a nice set of heads. A new camshaft with wider lobes will give you a better rumble.
The Monte Carlo has a carb with a manual choke that needs to be set before cranking to start when cold. Just step on the gas one time before cranking. That will let the choke close so it will start up without having a long crank time when cold. When the engine gets warmed, you don't need a choke, so it will start right away, without stepping on the gas. Just an old guy talking.
Option 2. And as for the sound you should get some high flow cats and replace all the cats (you can easily reach, cut and weld) with highflows and either replace the mufflers with some short 8"or 6" cherry bomb glass pack mufflers or if you aren't worried about price get some borla mufflers
Give the chickens little tiny chicken sized pianos. While some are pecking out "Chopsticks" and composing their chicken operas, they'll have the others transfixed in awe and have time to grow back some feathers....
That's not molting. Molting is not concentrated like that, and wouldn't hit every chicken in the exact same spot. Your laying boxes look fine. I would tend to think it's either an infestation, like you suspected, or you've got a bully in your flock. Check for one that doesn't have a bald patch. If you find one, that's your culprit.
The white chicken is running the coop. I’m pretty sure I saw him turn one of his pockets inside out and had one of the others grab onto it then lead him around the yard. Thug life.
Option 2, but drop in a 396 with a low profile super charger. Leave the fiberglass hood in place, swap out the transmission for a turbo 400 and swap the rear end for a posi-traction with 373 gears.
Definately. Put a 572 in it with Holley EFI and a procharger. You definately have the space in that living room they call an engine bay on the Monte Carlo.
Not sure I'd trust that 383 if someone can't even put valve covers on tight. Who knows what else is wrong in there. Given your noise preference, big block seems to be the right direction. Plus nothing says that you can't supercharge one of those. Moar boost!
A question board for chickens appears to show that is not an uncommon problem and is usually some form of pecking issue. One person had some luck adding fat to their diets and some protein as well as adding some enrichment (hung a cabbage up in the afternoon for them to attack.) Apparently, feathers are high in fat. Try adding some suet to their feed and move their run around a bit so that they can get more bugs (they kind of pick it clean in fairly short order.) The poster wasn't sure whether it was the higher protein, added fats or the enrichment but it worked so I'd go for all three. Some are choosing to roost on the ground from the holes I see in the video so you might want to vent the nesting boxes better - they might be too hot. That would irritate the skin and make it itchy, leading to plucking. Kind of like hot spots on dogs.
I think for what you're looking for, you'd be happiest throwing a big block in it and eventually a bigger cam and upgraded valvetrain if you really want it to make noise
Matt if you put crushed lime stone on the floor of the run they will have dust baths in it and that naturally kills any mites but you will probably find they are just pecking each other LOL they do silly things like that .
(Plz like so matt can see this!!!!!!!!) Dude check all the bolts and screws in the engine for your/familys safetys sake...more of them are bound to be loose and its better to check than have half of your engine fall apart while driving....and check the lugs on the tires...they may be loose considering that someone just finger tightened some of the bolts in the engine
a ummm "how would you want to tighten A Phillips screw?" i dont know maby with a Phillips head screwdriver or drill-bit....or maby just replace them and put bolts back on...then tighten them with a socket wrench....were not in the stone age and we dont have to hand tighten screws you know? We have tools for that kind of stuff buddy...entire stores devoted to tools...that should answer your "question"
Only one of my chickens had it, and it went away on its own. But regular molt feathers are on the wings. You can also look at the pigment of the feet and if they're pale they might be molting.
One of the hens will take the place of the rooster as the dominant chicken, and they have a literal pecking order. One hen will peck all of the others, the next won't peck the dominant one but all the rest, so on and so forth.
Yeah, I raise chickens have most my life. Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets really bad. Feathers come and go and chickens don't always look like show hens. If you get a rooster they can be pretty hard on the feathers.
The pop feathers can also be from the roosters mating because the roosters will stand on the back of the hands and will basically remove all the feathers after a while after mating
I’ve had chickens sine before I could walk, they look like there picking each other’s feathers out, every thing is fine just give them some grit and oyster shell, they eat there feathers for protein, if they have mites you can see by looking though there feathers!
There's so many different aftermarket parts for the chevy 350, it's honestly ridiculously easy to customize. You're looking at an engine that was standard for about 40 years, there's tons of parts for it.
Had hens for about 5 years, had this feather and skin problem in basically all of them. We sprayed them like you did but also after changing the bedding, spread a mite powder in it, which was much more effective than the spray.
Brother man use diatomaceous earth food-grade put it in a tub grab the chicken rub it the powder throughout their feathers it's a lot healthier for them peace my friend
454 big block! My dad’s a gear head and nothing matched that low bassy rumble from his 84 Grand Prix with a built 454 in it. That’s one man’s opinion though, take it what it’s worth.
They may have a parasite and they may not like their bedding much. Also tack an inch and a half wide strip of wood across the outside of the bottom of the nesting boxes to keep the bedding in there.
One of the chickens is plucking out the others feathers. We had a bird that did that once and got rid of her and it fixed the problem. Supposedly a rooster makes them all calm down.
My sister has chickens in Alaska and her chickens were pecking each other and she made little coats for them. There are patterns on line for these. She kept the coats on them until they healed and after she took them off, they didn't seem to peck each other anymore. Knowing chickens, they probably forgot they use to find it fun or something. Just a tip.
matt from what I know you should keep the white chicken away from the others for a week and if the missing feathers gets worst then ask the pros but if it doesn't then it's probably the white chicken but still ask the pros just to make sure
its common for chickens t.o pluck there own feathers as well as the other chickens feathers, for this reason is that that's how they give each other bathes and to make room for new feathers to grow or if they have ingrown feathers they'll pluck them
Pecking by other chickens usually on there backs is usually caused by stress, boredom or protein deficiency. Or heat stress. Hope this helps. You can debeak your chickens to stop this. It's done a lot with egg laying chickens also with turkeys. But regrowth can happen.
Green Lightening debeaking them only takes off the top part of there beak and normally only about 10%. This stops them from being able to pull feathers out. But they can still defend them selfs and eat/drink. And I would take it that they don't sleep in there nesting boxes so they have the whole chicken coop to sleep in and wouldn't think it would cause fighting between them. Just my thoughts. And just trying to help.
Regarding the chickens I first noticed there are a lot of holes in the run, which could be ok but they make them so that they can protect themselves from mites/lice by covering themselves in dust. You were right to treat for that and clean the coop. I might try wormwood bouquets in the coop and garlic juice on the birds for a natural remedy. It could be pecking order if new birds were recently introduced; that should work itself out. If their egg laying hasn't changed significantly I would give it time and observation.
Rookie mistake never ever clean a gasket off with metal (mental scraper etc.. ) You can cause little scratches witch then can lead to leaks! Plastic scrapers work great!
Sam Wagner I am not an expert , at all, but from my experience in small engines, it's either replace the gasket with a new one or use rtv in place of a new gasket, not both together (although this might be ok, I've just never done it) Matt probably knew he scratched the surface and probably doesn't care since it seems he will most likely replace this engine.
The chickens can pluck each other if they are in a tight space. If they have lice then give them dry sand to make sand baths it helps to get rid of the lice. The openings are the writing size but if they can't see each other and it's warm they will lay more eggs.
It looks like the chickens are pecking each other 2 feeders might help a bit. Ivermectin a drop on their back for mites and lice every 3 months and sprinkle diatomaceous earth in barn will keep parasites and flies under control. Also the openings are fine for the boxes if they were to small the chickens would just lay eggs under the boxes. :-) Love watching all the channels! :-)
Chickens don't peck each other's backs like that. They go for the head and neck. After all this time living together the chickens should have figured out the pecking order already and not have a lot of problems, certainly not a whole bunch of fights all at once between all of them to cause so much damage. It looks like self-inflicted wounds over irritation from mites. They can reach back and peck at themselves, sort of like how we itch ourselves. The thing to do is treat for mites, clean up the coop, new bedding, and hopefully that will fix the problem.
Get a hold of Larry Larson at Larson Race Cars and have him hook you up with a 502 with turbos. Also, noticing the hood and the truck don"t appear to close properly. The hood sits high at the windshield and the trunk looks like it is tweaked, just doesn't look like it is closing properly.
502 w/ weiand 8-71. You’ll make 800-1000hp easily. You’ll also be able to spin your tires doing 80, if you so wish. I would do an air locker in the rear, simply because having that diff on the highway will make it much more enjoyable to daily, and you’ll still be able to munch rubber at the flip of a switch. Also, a four link rear end and new control arms in the front along w/ coilovers will allow you to keep all that power moving in the direction you want it to.
Matt your white hen isn't a hen lol you can tell its a young roster..when u set him down in the video his neck feathers raised up..plus his comb is to big to be a hen..he is mating with the hens so much they are losing their feathers
Tractor Supply or some other feed store will sell a product called "blue kote". It is an iodine based product that will help keep the area clean. The bigger benefit is that is stains the skin BLUE and the hens stop picking on each other. Feather picking can result when hens are in an over crowded environment or stressed. It can get started when the hens are over mated. Once the skin is exposed, the other hens will continue to pick feathers. Use "blue kote" with care because it will stain your clothing too!
Believe me, I love the ls! but I feel the same way as Colton, getting way too common! I always liked mustangs but would never own one cause everybody and their brother has one! just saying. I'd do something like a 502 with a tunnel ram!
Missing feathers from the rooster having his way with the hens. Monte Carlo, 632 cubic INCH. Check Blueprint engines, awesome drop in engines. Anything you want.
Option #2 - Big Block. Go with a ZZ502 crate engine from Chevrolet Performance www.chevrolet.com/performance/crate-engines/big-block-zz-502-deluxe 508 HP / 580 lb-ft Torque. Nice choppy sounding idle too.
Stop asking if he's a Trump supporter. Why does it matter, he's still an amazing human being either way. Let him view politics the way that he wants to. We are all free to think and do what we want, that's the point of this country. If someone views something differently than you, you shouldn't shame them. Maybe just don't talk to that person about those things, easy as that.
Christian bro shut the fuck up if people want to ask that they can ask that. It looks suspicious he probably is a Donald Trump supporter I'm black but that's not going to change me from watching his video because he hasn't said or did nothing racist. But you got to understand there's a lot of black a lot of Mexicans, a lot of Chinese, Indian, men and women that watching his channel that feel that Donald Trump truly hate them and some of them are veterans I mean you can clearly read it off of it Twitter account so you can't get mad at them for asking
you, my friend, are an idiot. it should not matter how he feels, or what his views are on politics. so how about instead of disliking at least 60 million people who did vote for trump, we put politics aside and like people for who they are.
LS swap is over done in my opinion. Get a big block and for the rear end either get a limited slip or selectable locker. Selectable electronic locker would be my vote because they are durable and don't need any special treatment when it comes to fluid or servicing. Good luck with those chickens!
