This dude knows how to work! That's serious progress! Can't wait to see how you plan to secure that foundation and level up the house. Seeing how you took on that retaining wall project is a great indication of your work ethic. 😎👍

It's a slugfest working by oneself. GREAT Video kid. I'm near 80. I've done it all. I've been in combat - Vietnam, blown up, hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, floods, big hail storms, California earthquakes, house fire, auto wrecks, and other accidents. I'm one lucky SOB. I was raised on a 1400 acre Michigan farm. I've worked in government jobs, owned a business, insurance agent, mortgage broker, real estate agent, high school teacher, I remodeled my houses. Everything you do has a limited life span. Railroad ties will eventually fail. Problem? Money budget? Frost line for area? That water drain coming out from the porch needs to be put farther out and you had a great idea. I've got g grand parents and family buried in Paragould. Good luck kid. I like your efforts.

I used to watch a RU-vid channel about a guy and sometimes his wife driving around old towns of America. He went to Walmart head offices - I'm thinking it was in Bentonville - I loved it, so quaint and gorgeous tree lined suburbs. I am gobsmacked at your determination, hard work ethic and vision - your know-how is remarkable for someone so young. Keep an eye on those railroad ties. They can attract carpenter ants & termites, especially if they tend to get damp easily/often. We had several RR tie retaining walls around our property, rotted within a decade and the bugs!!!! Had to fork out some big bucks to change to blocks.

Cutting a large root will not hurt the tree as long as it is just a few of them. Removing that root will also keep that root from eventually pushing up that wall as it grows. I managed a large cemetery and cutting roots were essential now and then. It never hurt the trees.
@shakes7333
@shakes7333 2 месяца назад
I would think that tree is providing stability for the hill side with its roots. Cut it down then the roots decay over time allowing the ground to fill in the voids and start shifting. Roots acting like a huge anchor system. Just an observation 😊

Definitely very possible!
@JC-wo3nf
@JC-wo3nf 2 месяца назад
I enjoy your videos...they appeared randomly for some reason in my youtube list. Your interest and passion for the project come through. You mentioned removing the tree and your reluctance to do so. Those big trees I would assume add some stability to the hillside with their root structure, like rebar, so I would be hesitant to remove any of them at this point, especially on the down hill side. Maybe over time you can plant more trees to create a screen and add even more stability. Also you mentioned adding a shop or a place to park an RV to the land up from your house. Can you do that? Have you checked zoning and what is allowed there. Most municipalities have ordinances. It would suck to build something only to run into trouble later on for doing so. In any event keep,... up the good work.
@marchingmoto

If you could get a couple of high velocity fans (they don't need to be those huge shop ones) set up out there it would help with the heat. I use one when I work outdoors and the breeze from it can travel 20 ft away. It gives the effect of a natural breeze which is a godsend on those days when a single leaf isn't moving on the trees. Of course the guy that wants to see more suffering might want you to turn them off when you make a video😂

If that was my place, and I could do it, I would take your friends advice and build the shop and apartment. I would tear down the house and make that a big parking area and garage. Put a drive up to the shop. When that's done then I would build the house on the top level. You can use dirt from the different digging to help level out the lower level. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Here's my two cents worth on the tree roots. I have a 33-year-old Texas live oak in my front yard. When putting on a water line the excavator persons cut an eight inch root off about four feet from the tree. I thought the tree would die for sure. In fact, an arborist told me it would die. But the tree never missed that root. Just kept on growing. That was 10 years ago, and the tree is about 2.5 feet in diameter now. Maybe I was just lucky. I would ask around North Carolina and see what others say about the root.

I seen on a programme once about tree roots (tree lined streets, tree roots coming up into pavement), they said it's ok to cut the big thick mature roots but try never to damage the young fibrous roots. I'm a total tree freak so wouldn't want to give you questionable advice but this was an expert said that. I agree, it's a beautiful oak. Perhaps you should get advice from someone who'd know better. Those railway sleepers would be easier to lift and drop towards the site then lift and drop over again rather than lifting and walking with it. 😊 I'm trying to sound knowledgeable here 😅

I’m not an engineer, and I’m not a tree person, But if it was me I would’ve cut those roots down about an inch lower than what you want your foundation, ty are the top of the route that you cut, and then lay your Gravel and beams on top of that I think that would’ve worked and still saved your tree

Another great video. Soooo...would you consider doing a short segment where you introduce yourself? Like your first name and maybe more into your construction background? Nothing too personal, just a few things that will help people connect with you more. It will help your channel grow even more if we know what to call you lol.

I have a question. Is it possible to use one of those railroad ties attached to each end to the ball on the back of your truck to drag some of that gravel along the driveway to spread it out when you have some delivered for the driveway?
@marchingmoto

That would probably work

Be sure and tiilt each one INTO the hill...AND stair steo tgem slightly INTO the hill...a little like the Egyptian pyramids. Then, subsidence and gravity hold the wall in place against the forces pushing it to fall over

3:36 looks like someone knew what they were doing on that dry stack fieldstone wall. Interesting you do not have that many rocks in your dirt piles. In East Tennessee it is ridiculous how many stones turn up. Cannot even put a shovel into the ground without hitting rock after rock. Maddening.

That corrugated pipe is not the best. Its good cuz you can bend it whichever way you want to. I have watched a couple of vidoes from all access construction he does a lot of concrete retaining walls.and on one he had a failed corrugated pipe that had collapsed on itself and he had to dig it out. He uses perforated pvc white in color. Sdr 35 .The perforations or weep holes face to the bottom about 5 oclock and 7 oclock position. And picks the drain water from that position. The sdr35 is stronger less chance to collapse or clog up and easy to hydrojet or snake to clean out.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ic2DUUqwe_8.htmlsi=F3rTthsZuAjTl0wc. Also was gonna ask about the geofrabric .and also your gravel seems to have fines in it. It's good for compaction but not good for what goes above your drain pipe. But maybe you dont need to go that much overkill. Idk. Just trying to protect all the hardwork to last forever
@marchingmoto
@marchingmoto 2 месяца назад
Yeah thats a good point. Maybe i should stack some of the big stones around the pipe to distribute the weight off of the corrugated pipe

@@marchingmoto please watch the video I linked. I have watched a lot of French drain videos and this is the one that sticks out the most with key notes on what to watch out for. But like i said maybe your system is not deep enough to need all that. The filter fabric is essential though. To separate the dirt from the system. Also hopefully you are compacting in small incremental lift of dirt as you move up. So long as you never drive heavy over the corrugated pipe it if its shallow you should be fine. If its deep then it will collapse from the weight of the 3/4 rock. That's why if you have a chance you can swap it with the sdr35 4inch pipe.and then wrap the whole system like a burrito with filter fabric to prevent fines from getting in and clogging up flow.
