My father was a wartime Coastal Command Catalina pilot with RCAF 413 Squadron in Ceylon. He picked up a new PBY-5 Catalina off the assembly line in Buffalo New York and ferried it to Ceylon in nine legs, including an early trans-Atlantic flight under Ferry Command. They flew at 140 knots. Anyway, the joke that he used to tell us from the war about a Catalina approaching a U-Boat: "Herr Kapitan! There ist a Catalina approaching!" Ist there anyone on board who hasn't shot down a Catalina, yet?" " The Cabin Boy, mein Kapitan...hasn't shot down a Catalina, yet". "Send him up, herr Leutnant!"

A mutual friend of mine in the mid 1960's was named Henry. Henry emigrated to the United States from Germany sometime after the end of WWII. In Portland, Oregon he opened a successful radio and TV repair store common in those days. I shared time with my friend and Henry many times, and it was only after our mutual friend was seriously ill and I would never again meet with Henry that I learned Henry was a U-boat commander during the war. I have often longed to be able to turn back the clock and learn about some of his life during the war years. Not for condemnation, but the learning of history from one who had lived it. Das Boot is probably as close as I will get to that history these days, and I suspect I will listen to more of this series that gives some feeling of those times. Thanks to the producers for all they do.

I dated a girl many years ago, whose father was a member of Hitler's Youth Corp when he was roughly 8-10 years old. He said he attended a public speech in Berlin where 100,000 Germans came to hear the Fuhrer speak. He told me even with the huge crowd, when Hitler stepped up to the podium you could hear a pin drop.

Similarly, my dad flew a PBY and then a PBM. he described 16 hour-long patrols looking for Japanese subs and surface ships. Their course was shaped like a slice of pie. During the winter of 44-45 they flew bombing runs over Korean ports that were held by the enemy. One of the planes in his squadron was shot down from beside him and crash landed in Pusan Harbor. Apparently without much thought he landed. His crew saved the other crew of 13 and they took off. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Germany learnt of the capture of U-570 (later HMS Graph) in August 1941 from British news reports. In February 1942 the Kreigsmarine changed to a four rotor Enigma leaving Bletchley Park blind to most KM traffic until late 1942.

It was a Catalina that spotted the Japanese Aircraft Carriers at Midway, which allowed the flying of the U.S. dive bombers and destroying four of them, producing the start of the end of the Japanese Navy.

In the North Atlantic, it WOULD NOT have been a Catalina! Not enough RANGE! I would likely have been a British Sunderland with a range of 4500 Nautical miles when new, and beyond 6000 Nautical miles in later Marks. Near Cuba or the Florida Keys, it would have been a US Goodyear BLIMP with a "range" of 10,000 nautical miles at a thundering 17 Knots per hour, 20% FASTER than a U-Boat at "Flank" surfaced. Underwater, a U-Boat made 7 knots at "Flank" for 70 minutes and the batteries were completely discharged. Typical underwater speed was 2-3 knots for 30 hours. By War's end the US had developed MILLIMETER RADAR and could detect a U-Boat's "Whip" shortwave antenna at a 15-30 mile range (depending on surface conditions) with an accuracy of less than 300 feet! Those sets and the information was declassified only a couple of years ago.

@theophrastus3.056 24 дня назад
Based in Fleet Air Base Reykjavik, Iceland, they had all the range they needed. They also flew from Northern Ireland, Narsarssuak in Greenland, the Shetland Islands, plus Gander & Nova Scotia in northeast Canada. If they could (& did) operate across vast swaths of the Pacific, a significant portion of the North Atlantic was no obstacle. Patrols could also be one-way from one of those bases to another, and still have fuel to loiter over potential targets and/or pursue a circuitous route to cover more ocean. Later models had larger fuel tanks paired with more powerful engines to increase range, so it also depends on what year we're talking about.

All of these signals supposedly overheard would have been in code which the British were decoding but which the Uboats might not have been able to do if each boat had it's own identifiers.

Great listening channel, but the regular AI mispronunciations are sometimes laughable, and ruins narrative immersion,. Not that any company would care but on a historical perspective, this resource, hobbling upon an immature technology, becomes unusable, unreferencable, and consequently illegitimate. This content is lost from our collective history unless the channel that takes effort to present it also decides to take it seriously.
