Austin, LS basic performance upgrades: Gen 3: - Cam (look into the BTR Truck Norris for your application) - Springs - Need Cam retaining plate (always change these, cheap insurance) - Oil Pump (High Volume not High Pressure - Melling 10335 or 10355) Gen 4 Same as above with DOD Delete kit if needed That's about it in general, good luck

My guess from the last video was 3.4L toyota or an LS. Great choice! For the harness Painless wiring makes a complete LS swap specific harness which saves a ton of time. Since you'll obviously be needing to rewire the FJ as well Painless is the way to go! Cam, headers and a tune is all you're gonna need to make that FJ dance. Hopefully this one doesn't turn into a video game themed build like the last one 😂

Man, I am STOKED to see you dropping a 5.3 into the FJ! I've been a Chevy truck guy for nearly 20 years and I've wrenched on dozens of these engines, so holler if you need anything. I'm going to shoot you an email as well, but Justin Gadberry over at Black Bear Performance (I believe they're in Couer d'Alene, ID now) has been my tuning guy since 2008. He's awesome.

I doubt a newer transmission, my money is on a new rear main seal and they did a crap job when they put the tranny back in. I could be wrong though. As for freshening it up, make sure you put in a new timing chain, so a double roller if it doesn’t have one, especially if your are going to cam it and tune it. Also, do new crank seals, valve cover seals, and oil pan like you said. Lastly, ls motors love headers and intakes, they make a big difference compared to 4 bangers. Get a full exhaust and better intake and you will see a noticeable difference once tuned

Holley Terminator X Max will run your engine and transmission in stand alone and is self tuning by the wizard hand held unit some leave it like that but it is probably better to then take it to a reputable tuner that can clean it up. The next thing would be a "Truck Norris" cam, spring and lifter kit with a Mellings 10% pressure & volume upgrade, all these will give a very good rise in performance with good fuel economy and reliability.

Blackbear tunes. Check the oil pres switch on back of intake area driver side. theres a little basket/filter thing in there than can plug up. Might need a diff oil pan depending on your front axle placement in the FJ

This gen of 5.3 doesn’t have the filter under the oil pressure sensor. That came out in the 07 and up gen if I remember correctly. My truck is an 07 classic (still the cateye body style) and it didn’t have one when I swapped my sensor out.

Almost all Chevy transmissions need rebuild before 200k. Not surprised this one had the trans off. This is going to be a great power train for the little Toyota. Loving the content.

Highly recommend AFM (active fuel mgmt) delete. That should be part of a cam swap. AFM is one of the major causes of the failures of those engines.

257,000 is a lot of miles if that's the original engine. Replacing the rings and bearings would be a good idea. Hopefully those cylinder walls aren't too sloppy.

I second Blackbear performance tune. Took my 8.1 w similar mods you mentioned from 330h/440t to 450h/600t.. snaps your head thru the gears and you get 87 & 91 octane options as well as back to stock with the hardware/software that you own.

New cam and headers , injection, cold air intake and 2.5” exhaust 👌🏻 Thats a perfect engine 🤩👑 and then a lift kit and 33” wheels (offroad tires) ledbars on the roof and in the front , rock lights above the wheels and gunship grey paint on the car with black accents 🙌

Austin, to keep with the original, why not install a straight-six? Ford 300 ci, is one I can think of. Or a Jeep 4 litre? Whatabout trying to find a Toyota 4.2l, as it had in originally. Use a 5- speed manual transmission with the six

Tbss / nnbs intake manifold 92 mm throttle body good truck cam for torque. WHEN DOING OIL PUMP DO NOT GO HIGH VOLUME PUMP PERIOD IT CAN CAUSE CAVITATION. Not as likely on a truck pan but its not necessary. High pressure only is the plus. e85 doesn’t do much unless you have high compression on these.

Revlimit off road in Texas tunes and makes ls swap harnesses. As far as upgrades, cam, springs, and trunion upgrade. Holly high ram intake with larger fbody throttle body with equal length exhaust

You’re gonna have to put a different pan on it anyway- most of us use the GM F-body pan. You’ll get a new pickup tube and o-ring in that kit. I just helped a buddy drop the LS in his 40 today. I put an H55F behind mine, but he’s running the GM auto.

Tommy Wong in Vancouver Washington will get your tune right he's a pro been tuning since the 90s atleast does a ton of corvettes and gm tuning but can tune anything fuel injection or carburetors

Upgrade oil pickup tube flange comes with 1 bolt hole, upgrade rocker arms to ones with a clip instead of just pressed in.

In my opinion, you should upgrade the transmission. 4l60e are known for blowing if not properly taken care of. Not knowing about maintenance, origin, if rebuilded/remanufactured about the one that you have would be bothering me. I would choose a 4l80e these things are nearly indestructible even with high mileage and can take any addionnal power w/o any upgrades to it
