We have to change our baby boy Asher’s name (Full Explanation) 

As a chasidic ultra orthodox Jewish woman, whose brother in law is a Cohen from the Jewish tribe, I am horrified that you got such hate for Asher’s middle name. You are a wonderful family with true values. I’m so sorry and hope you don’t think that all Jewish people are like that. May G-D continue to smile upon you and your beautiful family.

I’m Jewish and appalled at the cruelty of those attacking you for picking Cohen. Seriously people-is this truly how we treat others? If for some reason you don’t like something, move along and keep your mouth shut. Not ok to ever be mean to others.

I personally agree with your analysis about first names vs, last names. I hate that people attacked you for his name. My son's name is Arabic and he's African American . His Dad picked that name and I love it. I had someone correct me on the pronunciation of it but nothing like what you endured. Cara you're amazing and a great mother. The fact that you're willing to change his name to protect him, shows the type of amazing mother you are.

I wouldn’t change it. People now a days feel offended about everything and expect people to conform to their way of living or thinking. I think you shouldn’t care what others think or say. I changed my first son’s first and last name when his father signed away his rights, because he was named after him. So while it’s awful that you’re having to change his name due to getting hate from others, I understand your decision. I am partial to the name Krew (my second son’s name)

As a Jewish, I don’t see any problem with you using Cohen as your son’s middle name. I think it is beautiful. I know a lot of Cohens; I have Cohen in my family. People should see it differently; they should be proud of you calling your son Cohen! Those people who wrote you hate comments should be ashamed! There is a saying in Hebrew that says “proper behavior precedes the Torah,” which means that being a good person is more important than any law in the Torah!! And those people who sent you hate comments are not good!! It doesn't make them good Jewish people if they “defend” the name Cohen while they are sending you hate comments. I'm Jewish and I was surprised when I saw Asher's name first posted because I've never seen the name used outside of Jewish circles (and definitely not as a first/middle name) but honestly, you can do whatever the F you want, it's your child. I get that you weren't in love with the name and the reasoning for him in the future but nobody else should interfere. And I'm so sorry you received actual hate messages about it; that's certainly not what Jews stand for. I really don't get it because Jewish people get enough hate from others, we shouldn't be dishing it out. For those that aren't aware, a Cohen is a priest that performs the rituals of the Temple from the bible. There are many families today who can trace their lineage back to this elite group of the community, often with last names such as Cohen or even Katz. (And, just for the record, Asher is a biblical name as well but for some reason people don't have problems with that. *eye roll*)

My best friend's son's name is Cohen, or Coen, and I can promise you that she would tell them to suck it! Keep his name! He is precious and they are being so dramatic! If you really like his middle name, I would leave it knowing he will be going by Asher and not Cohen. Having a lot of followers, I understand if you would change it. Here are some middle names if you choose to change: Blaze, Jett, Jax, Beck, Grant, Brock, Clark, Zane, Drew, Levi, Wade, Cole, Finn, Lane, Eli, Wyatt, Dane, Colt. I personally think Asher Cohen is adorable and sounds perfect together. I would never change my child’s name because of haters. Like we’re supposed to study every name we like and make sure that it’s appropriate and wouldn’t offend other cultures? I named my kids what I liked and never once worried about whether it would offend anyone else. It’s none of their business and they need to just scroll on by. Asher is a biblical name, someone could just as easily call that name sacred or be offended by it. My point being, no matter what you name your child someone is likely to be offended. If you like a name, use it. I personally have a Cohen and I’d like to see someone try to say something to my baby about his name.

My suggestion for Asher's middle name is Luke. It means "Bringer of light" and he does bring a lot of light into your family, home and lives! Plus, it's short, Biblical and very masculine. So sorry you received criticism for the name Cohen. Some people can be overly pernicious, caustic and rude! When they point a finger at you like that, remember that they have THREE fingers pointing back at themselves.

Good luck with the name change! When my daughter was 6 months old, I decided that she needed a second middle name. My exe had talked me out of the name but then promptly stepped out when she was born. I didn’t want to be hasty though so I waited and just called her the full name without it being legal. Well finally, a couple of months ago, my husband officially adopted her. She had her 2nd middle name legally added and she switched her last name to match the rest of us (she had my maiden name originally) My suggestions for Asher’s middle name would be; Beau, Kye; Clyde; Gene, Rhys, Fox or Knox
